The Boeing AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine attack helicopter built for the US Army, in service since 1986. It carries a 30mm chain gun slaved to the gunner's helmet-mounted sight, Hellfire missiles and rockets, and is flown by 19 countries.[1]
Developed from Hughes Helicopters' Model 77 to find and destroy armoured vehicles at night and survive ground fire while doing it, the Apache made its combat debut in the opening hours of the 1991 Gulf War and has since flown in every major American air campaign, as well as with Israel and other allied air forces.[2]
The Apache traces to the US Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter competition of the early 1970s, a Vietnam-era push to replace the lightly armed AH-1 Cobra with a survivable, all-weather tank-killer built for the Cold War's expected armor battles in Central Europe. Hughes Helicopters' Model 77 beat Bell's rival YAH-63 design and flew as the YAH-64 on 30 September 1975.[2]
The design brief was blunt: find and destroy Soviet armor at night, survive small-arms and light anti-aircraft fire while doing it, and keep flying home on one engine if the other was hit. That survivability-first philosophy - separated, armored crew stations; redundant flight controls; a rotor system rated to keep turning after direct hits - still defines the airframe.[1]
Two pilots sit in stepped tandem seats - gunner up front, pilot behind and above - each with enough redundant flight controls and instrumentation to fly and fight the aircraft alone if the other seat is disabled. Beneath the gunner's chin turret sits the M230 30mm chain gun, slaved to whichever crewman's helmet-mounted sight is currently looking at the target, so the gun simply points wherever the gunner looks.[1]
The definitive AH-64D added the Longbow fire-control radar in its distinctive mast-mounted dome above the main rotor, letting the aircraft scan for armored vehicles from behind cover and share target data across a flight of Apaches without exposing itself or breaking radio silence. The current AH-64E Guardian keeps that radar option but rebuilds the avionics around fully digital, open-architecture mission computers and adds composite rotor blades and uprated T700 engines for better hot-and-high performance.[2]
Two General Electric T700 turboshafts drive a four-bladed main rotor and four-bladed tail rotor through a transmission rated to keep the aircraft flying - if not fighting - after losing an engine, part of a broader design philosophy that treats crew survival as a harder requirement than mission completion.[1]
The Apache's combat debut was also one of the most dramatic openings of any modern war: in the early hours of 17 January 1991, nine AH-64As of Task Force Normandy destroyed two Iraqi early-warning radar sites with precision Hellfire strikes, cutting a hole in Iraq's air-defense coverage before a single coalition fighter crossed the border. Apaches went on to destroy hundreds of Iraqi armored vehicles during the ground war that followed.[2]
Since then the type has flown continuously over Iraq and Afghanistan, including high-profile and costly missions such as the 2003 Objective Peach raid near Karbala, where dozens of Apaches took heavy small-arms damage attacking a Republican Guard division; it has also equipped Israel's air force since 1990, seeing extensive use in Gaza, Lebanon and the wider region. In June 2026, a US Army Apache went down in the Strait of Hormuz during the escalating conflict with Iran - Tehran claimed a shoot-down, and a later US assessment pointed to an Iranian drone strike, while both crew were rescued unharmed by an autonomous sea drone.[3][4]
With more than 2,875 airframes built and over 890 AH-64Es delivered by late 2025, the Apache remains the backbone of the US Army's attack helicopter fleet and the type of choice for 19 partner nations, from Israel and the UK to South Korea and India. Boeing's Mesa, Arizona line continues E-model production into the 2030s, and the company has begun previewing a further 'Modernized Apache' concept built around an open, modular mission-systems architecture intended to keep the platform relevant into the 2060s.[1]
The June 2026 loss over the Strait of Hormuz was a reminder that low-flying attack helicopters remain vulnerable to the kind of cheap drones and man-portable weapons now common on modern battlefields - a threat the Modernized Apache's sensor and survivability upgrades are explicitly being designed to counter, even as the airframe itself heads toward its fifth decade in frontline service.[2]
As a military attack helicopter the Apache is not required to broadcast ADS-B and typically flies low, so sightings on Flightradar24 are opportunistic - most visible near major Army aviation hubs or during publicized exercises.
