The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine, single-seat multirole fighter developed by General Dynamics, now built by Lockheed Martin. More than 4,600 have been built for over two dozen air forces, making it the most numerous fixed-wing combat aircraft in service today.[1][2]
It has fought over Lebanon's Bekaa Valley and over Baghdad, destroyed Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor in a 1981 raid, and entered Ukrainian service in 2024. Pilots have called it the 'Viper' since its first operational squadron stood up.[1]
The F-16 exists because a small group of Pentagon insurgents - the self-styled 'Fighter Mafia' around Colonel John Boyd, mathematician Thomas Christie and designer Harry Hillaker - believed 1960s fighters had lost the plot. Boyd's energy-manoeuvrability theory reduced dogfighting to mathematics, and the mathematics said the winning fighter was small, light, simple and agile, with more thrust than weight and a pilot who could see out.[1]
Their heresy became the Lightweight Fighter (LWF) program of 1972, a fly-before-buy competition the establishment expected to remain a technology demo. General Dynamics' YF-16 flew against Northrop's twin-engined YF-17 through 1974; the YF-16 won in January 1975 on agility, range and the economics of sharing the F-15's engine.[1]
What guaranteed the type's future came five months later: Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway jointly picked the F-16 over the Mirage F1 and a Swedish Viggen derivative to replace their F-104s - the 'Deal of the Century', which planted F-16 production lines and four decades of operators across Europe from the start.[1]
Turning the YF-16 into the production F-16A stretched the fuselage, grew the radar nose and added hardpoints - the start of a weight-and-capability spiral the Fighter Mafia grumbled about forever after. Deliveries to Hill AFB began in January 1979, with the European partner air forces following within months from their own assembly lines in Belgium and the Netherlands.[1]
The design then did something few fighters manage: it kept absorbing new roles without losing its edge. The C/D models added beyond-visual-range missiles and precision strike; successive Block numbers brought new radars, engines and electronic warfare fits; and by the 2000s the F-16 was less a single aircraft than a family tree spanning forty years of avionics.[3]
It refuses to end. The current Block 70/72 - AESA radar, new cockpit, conformal tanks, automatic ground-collision avoidance - is built at a dedicated Greenville, South Carolina line with 122 delivered and a backlog of roughly 530 aircraft as of mid-2026, keeping production alive into the 2030s.[2][4][5]
The F-16 was the first production aircraft designed to be aerodynamically unstable on purpose. Relaxed static stability meant the airframe wanted to depart controlled flight every instant - and the analogue (later digital) fly-by-wire system, another production first, caught it every instant, converting instability into extraordinary agility. Pilots don't so much deflect the F-16's controls as request manoeuvres from the computer.[1]
The cockpit departed sharply from earlier fighters too: a frameless bubble canopy for improved all-round visibility, a seat reclined 30 degrees to raise g-tolerance, and a force-sensing sidestick on the right console in place of the centre stick fighters had used since 1914. The airframe was designed to a 9g structural limit.[1]
Underneath it all: one F100 engine shared with the F-15, a blended wing-body that carries lift into the fuselage, and the strake vortices that keep the nose flying at angles of attack that would stall the aircraft it replaced.[1]
Israel wrote the type's first legends. On 7 June 1981, eight Israeli F-16As flew low across Jordan and Saudi Arabia to destroy Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor - a mission at the ragged edge of their unrefuelled range and the defining precision strike of its era. A year later over Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, Israeli F-16s tore through the Syrian air force in history's largest jet-versus-jet battle, establishing an air-to-air record the type never surrendered.[6]
For the U.S. and NATO, the F-16 became the everywhere-fighter: 13,340 sorties in Desert Storm (more than any other coalition type), no-fly zones over Iraq and the Balkans, strikes in Kosovo, Afghanistan and against ISIS, and the backbone of a dozen allied air arms doing the same jobs on the same jets.[1]
Its newest war began in August 2024, when the first European-donated F-16s reached Ukraine. Flying air defence against cruise missiles and Shahed drones - and losing airframes and pilots doing it - Ukrainian Vipers turned a Cold War icon into the most-watched fighter of the 2020s, sustained by a NATO pipeline of Danish and Dutch donations and even boneyard airframes shipped for spares.[7][2]
By the numbers alone the F-16 is the most successful Western fighter of the jet age: over 4,600 built, more than two dozen operator nations, an air-to-air record measured in dozens of kills against a single loss, and - uniquely for a 1970s design - a production backlog that grew in the 2020s.[2][8]
Fly-by-wire instability, the sidestick, the reclined seat, the bubble canopy and thrust-to-weight over unity all became standard features on fighters designed after the F-16. Many air forces that buy the F-35 as an F-16 successor continue operating F-16s alongside it rather than retiring the type.[4]
Fifty years after Phil Oestricher's unplanned first flight, air forces from Bratislava to Kyiv to Taipei are still taking delivery of new F-16s.[3]

An F-16D collided with a C-130 on approach and, after the crew ejected, ploughed into a parked C-141 on the ramp at Pope AFB. The fireball swept through paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne staging for a jump, killing 24 of them and injuring more than eighty - the worst peacetime loss in the division's history.
A USAF F-16C was shot down over Bosnia by a Bosnian-Serb surface-to-air missile while enforcing the NATO no-fly zone. The pilot ejected, evaded capture for six days and was rescued by U.S. Marines.
A Greek Mirage 2000 shot down a Turkish F-16D during a confrontation over the Aegean; the pilot was killed and the back-seater ejected. Greece denied the shootdown for sixteen years before acknowledging it in 2012.
A USAF F-16CG was shot down over Yugoslavia by a surface-to-air missile during NATO's Operation Allied Force. The pilot ejected and was recovered by combat search-and-rescue forces.
A U.S. Air National Guard F-16 pilot dropped a laser-guided bomb on Canadian soldiers conducting a night live-fire exercise near Kandahar, Afghanistan, after mistaking their fire for a hostile attack.
A Turkish F-16 and a Greek F-16 collided during an interception encounter over the Aegean Sea, part of long-running airspace disputes between the two countries. The Greek pilot was killed.
A Royal Jordanian Air Force F-16 crashed near Raqqa, Syria during an anti-ISIS coalition strike mission. The pilot survived the crash but was captured by ISIS and later killed in captivity.
A loose checklist jammed the yaw trim of a Hellenic Air Force F-16D at full deflection seconds after takeoff in Spain; the jet rolled over and hit the flight line, destroying French Mirage 2000Ds and Alpha Jets and an Italian AMX. Both Greek pilots and nine ground personnel were killed and more than thirty injured.
An F-16C on an instrument training flight struck a Cessna 150 broadside over South Carolina after air traffic control failed to keep the two apart. The fighter pilot ejected; both people in the Cessna were killed.
Thunderbird 6 came down near Colorado Springs immediately after the US Air Force Academy graduation flyover attended by President Obama. The pilot ejected safely and the mishap was traced to a throttle trigger error.
A Syrian S-200 missile brought down an Israeli F-16I returning from a strike on Iranian assets in Syria - the first Israeli combat aircraft lost to enemy fire in decades. Both crew ejected over Israeli territory and survived.
Ukraine lost one of the F-16s delivered only weeks earlier while repelling a mass Russian missile and drone attack, killing the pilot. It was the type's first loss in Ukrainian service.
A Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile brought down a Ukrainian F-16, killing 26-year-old pilot Pavlo Ivanov.
Pilot Maksym Ustymenko was killed when his F-16 was struck by debris from a drone he had just destroyed during a large-scale Russian attack; he stayed with the aircraft to steer it away from a populated area.
