The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 is a Soviet single-engine, delta-wing supersonic fighter. Over 11,000 were built in the Soviet Union, India and Czechoslovakia, plus thousands more as Chinese-built J-7 copies, making it the most-produced supersonic aircraft in history.[1]
It has been flown by roughly 60 air forces and has seen combat somewhere in the world in nearly every year since 1963, including against US F-4 Phantoms over Vietnam.[1]
Korea's MiG-15-versus-Sabre duels convinced Soviet planners that the next war's fighter needed one thing above all: performance. The requirement that became the MiG-21 asked for a lightweight point-defence interceptor - Mach 2, blistering climb, minimal everything else - to defend the homeland against Western bombers.[1]
Mikoyan-Gurevich tested both swept and tailed-delta prototypes; the delta Ye-4/Ye-5 line won, evolving into the Ye-6 that first flew in 1958 as the production template. The formula: a tiny tailed delta wrapped around one Tumansky turbojet, with a nose intake whose movable centre cone housed the (initially tiny) radar.[1]
The MiG-21's genius was industrial as much as aeronautical. Three generations - the day-fighter F-13, the all-weather PF/PFM family, and the multirole MF/bis with more fuel, better engines and real avionics - kept the same cheap, tough airframe relevant for thirty years of production, ending in the USSR in 1985 and in India (under licence) later still.[1]
Counting China's reverse-engineered Chengdu J-7 (built until 2013)[2], the family exceeds 13,000 aircraft - a scale no supersonic design has approached since. By the 1970s the MiG-21 equipped the air forces of dozens of Warsaw Pact, Middle Eastern, Asian and African states.[1]
Everything on the Fishbed serves lightness and speed. The razor-thin delta wing gave low supersonic drag and a startling climb; the price was ferocious landing speeds and fuel reserves best measured in minutes - a point-defence aircraft in the most literal sense, with early models carrying barely 45 minutes of flying.[1]
It was engineered for the real Soviet world: grass and dirt strip operations, maintenance by conscripts with hand tools, temperatures from Siberia to the Sahara. The forward-hinging canopy of early models doubled as a blast shield during ejection - a characteristically brutal-but-clever Soviet touch later abandoned for a conventional design.[1]
Vietnam was the proving ground. Flown by North Vietnamese pilots under strict ground control, MiG-21s slashed through American strike packages with hit-and-run Atoll missile attacks, imposing real losses and forcing the U.S. to reinvent its training. Aces like Nguyen Van Coc (nine kills, the war's highest-scoring pilot)[3] flew the Fishbed; both sides ended the war respecting it.[1]
It fought everywhere else too: Indo-Pakistani wars (including the first supersonic-vs-supersonic combats of 1971), the Middle East from 1967 through the Bekaa Valley's massacre of Syrian MiGs in 1982, the Iran-Iraq War, African conflicts beyond counting - and, astonishingly, into the 2020s, with upgraded examples flying combat in regional conflicts a lifetime after the design's first flight.[1]
Its long twilight has been harder: ageing airframes earned grim nicknames ('flying coffin' in India's press), and operators from Romania to India finally retired their fleets in the 2020s - India's last MiG-21 squadrons standing down after six decades of service.[1]
No fighter has armed more nations, fought more wars or trained more pilots than the MiG-21. Its low cost and simplicity meant the MiG-21 was exported and license-built more widely than most technically superior Western fighters, shaping air combat across five decades of regional conflicts.[1]
Hundreds still serve - Chinese J-7 derivatives above all - and hundreds more are preserved in museums from Hanoi to Havana.[4] More supersonic MiG-21s were built than every Western Mach 2 fighter of its generation combined.[1]
A small number of MiG-21s remain airworthy in private warbird collections, particularly in the US, and appear at airshows; a handful of air forces still fly the type in limited reserve/training roles, occasionally visible on Flightradar24 near those bases.

During the War of Attrition, Israeli Mirage IIIs and F-4s baited Soviet-piloted Egyptian MiG-21s into an air battle over the Suez Canal, shooting down five MiG-21s in around three minutes.
In one of the largest air battles of the Yom Kippur War, roughly 62 Egyptian MiG-21s engaged around 120 Israeli Phantoms and Skyhawks over the Nile Delta. Egypt reported losing six MiG-21s in the 53-minute engagement.
Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja's MiG-21 was brought down by Pakistani ground fire during the Kargil war. He ejected but was killed after capture, an act India condemned as murder.
Two Indian MiG-21FLs shot down a Pakistan Navy Bréguet Atlantique maritime patrol aircraft with an R-60 missile after it entered Indian airspace, killing all sixteen on board and bringing the two countries close to conflict weeks after Kargil.
An Indian Air Force MiG-21 crashed during a low-level training exercise in the Rajasthan desert in extreme heat, killing the pilot. It came amid a run of MiG crashes that had killed over 50 IAF pilots in the preceding decade.
During an India-Pakistan aerial engagement following the Balakot airstrikes, an Indian Air Force MiG-21 Bison was shot down. The pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, ejected, was captured, and was returned to India after 60 hours.
Serbia's last flying MiG-21UM - the final MiG-21 built in the Soviet Union - crashed near Mali Zvornik, killing both pilots.
An Indian Air Force MiG-21 Bison crashed during a night training mission in Punjab. The pilot ejected but died of his injuries, one of three fatal MiG-21 crashes the IAF suffered that year.
