The Tupolev Tu-95, NATO reporting name Bear, is a Soviet-designed, swept-wing turboprop strategic bomber built by Tupolev. It first flew in 1952 and entered service in 1956; it remains the only swept-wing turboprop bomber ever mass-produced and the fastest propeller aircraft in history.[1]
Its four Kuznetsov NK-12 engines drive contra-rotating propellers whose tips exceed the speed of sound, producing a distinctive drone audible for miles. Since 2022 Russia has used Tu-95MS bombers to launch cruise missiles against Ukraine; a Ukrainian drone raid in June 2025, Operation Spiderweb, destroyed or damaged around a dozen of the irreplaceable fleet.[1][2]
Stalin's 1950 requirement was brutal in its simplicity: carry a nuclear weapon 8,000 kilometres - to America - and come home. Jet engines of the day drank too much for the range; straight-winged turboprops were too slow to survive. Andrei Tupolev's answer broke the deadlock by combining what nobody had combined: a jet bomber's 35-degree swept wing with turboprop economy.[1]
That required an engine that didn't exist. The Kuznetsov NK-12 - developed with the 'assistance' of interned German engine teams - remains the most powerful turboprop ever built at up to 15,000 shaft horsepower, each driving two four-bladed contra-rotating propellers. Four of them gave the Bear jet-adjacent speed at piston-era fuel burn, and a sound signature all its own.[3]
The prototype flew in November 1952 (its second prototype crashed fatally, nearly killing the program), and the Tu-95 entered service in 1956. The airframe immediately proved to be one of history's great multi-tools: maritime reconnaissance Bears shadowed every NATO fleet exercise for decades, the Tu-142 sub-hunter version served three navies, and a passenger derivative (Tu-114) held airliner speed records while a modified Bear dropped Tsar Bomba, the largest weapon ever detonated.[1]
The definitive Tu-95MS - a new-build missile carrier on the Tu-142's improved airframe - was produced into the early 1990s, armed with long-range cruise missiles that transformed the Bear from penetrating bomber to stand-off launcher: the role it still flies.[1]
For NATO pilots, intercepting Bears became the Cold War's most photographed ritual: the huge silver aircraft probing air-defence zones from Alaska to Scotland to Japan, tail gunners waving at escorting fighters wingtip-to-wingtip. The patrols paused in 1992, then resumed under Putin in 2007 - the same airframes, often the same routes, a third generation of interceptor pilots rising to meet them.[1]
Its first shots in anger came astonishingly late: in November 2015, sixty-three years after first flight, Tu-95MS bombers launched cruise missiles at targets in Syria. Since February 2022 the Bear has been a workhorse of Russia's long-range strikes against Ukraine, lobbing Kh-101 cruise missiles from deep inside Russian airspace, hundreds of launches shaping the war's air campaign.[1]
Ukraine reached back. On 1 June 2025, Operation Spiderweb smuggled drone-laden trucks beside airbases across Russia and destroyed or damaged roughly a dozen strategic aircraft - including seven or more Tu-95MS - in the worst Russian bomber losses since WWII. With production tooling long gone, every Bear lost is a Bear that cannot be replaced; survivors dispersed to bases as far as the Pacific, adding hours to every mission.[2][4]
The Bear's persistence is engineering pragmatism. Turboprops sip fuel where jets gulp it, giving 15,000 km range without tankers; the swept wing keeps cruise near 550 mph, absurd for propellers; and the airframe's low stress and metal simplicity make 70-year-old aircraft maintainable in ways more exotic bombers aren't.[1]
Its crews pay the classic Soviet price: the Bear is notoriously loud and spartan inside, and its escape system - crew sliding out via a ventral hatch and moving belt, no upward ejection - reflects design priorities from another century. The aircraft has outlived the doctrine, the country and most of the men that built it.[1]
The Bear and the B-52 are aviation's great parallel lives: 1950s strategic bombers that buried every announced successor and now plan service lives approaching a century - the Tu-95 officially intended to serve toward 2040 alongside the endlessly delayed PAK DA replacement. Whether the shrunken post-Spiderweb fleet gets there is now one of Russian air power's defining questions.[5]
Its cultural footprint is secure regardless: the silhouette in a thousand intercept photos, the drone submariners heard through the sea, the aircraft that turned 'Bear hunt' into a NATO verb. Aviation has produced faster and deadlier bombers; it has never produced a more recognisable one.[1]
Tu-95s do not broadcast civil ADS-B, so Flightradar24 never shows them directly; their movements instead surface indirectly through the NATO, US and Canadian fighters (F-35s, F-16s, F-22s, Typhoons) scrambled to intercept and shadow them near Alaska, the Barents/Norwegian Sea, and Japan, which occasionally do appear on trackers during training or intercept sorties.

A Tu-95 reported an engine fire that was extinguished but then lost control and crashed into the Barents Sea; a propeller blade failure causing decompression is suspected. Twelve crew were killed.
During a night approach to an alternate airfield in fog, the crew descended below a safe altitude and struck trees short of the runway, killing eleven crew.
During takeoff at Ukrainka Air Base, a Tu-95MS's left engine caught fire and exploded, causing the bomber to veer off the runway and burn. Nine crew were injured and two later died of their wounds.
Two Tu-95 losses inside six weeks, one of them killing two crew, forced Russia to ground the fleet while ageing engines and components were inspected - a public sign of the strain of keeping 1960s airframes on combat duty.
Ukrainian intelligence launched 117 small drones from trucks smuggled up to Russian airbases as far away as Siberia. Independent imagery confirmed several Tu-95MS destroyed or damaged at Belaya and Olenya - irreplaceable losses, as the type has been out of production since 1993.
Ukraine's SBU said long-range drones struck Engels-2 airbase in Russia's Saratov region, tearing the tail section off a parked Tu-95. Satellite imagery later showed the aircraft severed in half.
