The Airbus A320 family is a twin-engine, single-aisle airliner series built by Airbus across four fuselage lengths - the A318, A319, A320 and A321 - and two engine generations, the original ceo and the re-engined neo. The baseline A320 first flew on 22 February 1987 and entered service with Air France on 8 April 1988 as the world's first airliner controlled through digital fly-by-wire and a sidestick rather than a mechanically linked control yoke. [1]
The programme was launched on 2 March 1984 specifically to beat the Boeing 737 on fuel efficiency, and for three decades the two families ran close in total orders. That changed after 2015: the A320neo entered service six months before Boeing's competing 737 MAX and built a lasting order lead, and in September 2025 the A320 family passed the 737 to become the most-delivered jet airliner in history. [1]
Airbus was the newer, smaller manufacturer competing against Boeing's 737 and McDonnell Douglas's DC-9, both mechanically conventional designs by the 1980s. Airbus president Roger Beteille framed the choice starkly: either be first with new technology or accept staying out of the market. The A320 became the test case - a clean-sheet single-aisle jet with no mechanical link at all between the sidestick and the control surfaces, its inputs interpreted by flight control computers that kept the aircraft inside a protected flight envelope regardless of what the pilot commanded. [1]
The sidestick freed a large amount of cockpit space a control yoke would have occupied and, because the computers - not the pilot - held the aircraft within its structural and aerodynamic limits, it changed what a pilot needed to actively manage in a way no airliner cockpit had before. The same fly-by-wire architecture and a common type rating across every model in the family let an airline mix A318s, A319s, A320s and A321s in one fleet with a single pilot pool, a commonality Airbus has preserved through the neo re-engining and now leans on as one of the family's main selling points against Boeing's more fragmented 737 generations. Because the A320 was designed from scratch rather than adapted from an older type, stretching or shrinking the fuselage was a straightforward engineering exercise rather than the running compromise Boeing has had to manage on the 737's 1960s-era airframe. Airbus stretched the basic fuselage 6.94 m for the A321, launched in November 1988 and delivered from January 1994, and shrank it 3.73 m for the A319, launched in June 1993 and delivered from April 1996 to compete directly with the 737-700. The smallest model, the A318, launched in April 1999 and delivered from July 2003, was sized for thin routes and steep-approach airports such as London City, but sold fewer than 80 aircraft and was never re-engined. The A321 has been the commercial standout of the stretch programme, now outselling the equivalent Boeing 737-900 by roughly three to one. Its most significant derivative, the A321XLR, adds a permanent rear fuel tank for a 4,700 nmi range and entered service with Iberia in November 2024, letting airlines fly thin long-haul routes - the kind that used to need a wide-body - with a single-aisle jet's lower trip cost. Airbus launched the re-engined A320neo on 1 December 2010, offering a choice of CFM LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines plus new wingtip sharklets for roughly 15 percent better fuel burn, and delivered the first aircraft on 25 January 2016. Because the neo reached service six months before Boeing's competing 737 MAX, Airbus had already banked around 1,000 orders by the time Boeing could respond, an early lead the MAX's 2019-2020 grounding widened rather than closed. [1]
The order book since has been lopsided in Airbus's favour: the A320neo family passed 10,000 orders in December 2023, the first airliner generation ever to do so, and by July 2023 the A321neo alone had outsold the entire 737-800 production run. By May 2026 the A320 family had 20,169 total orders against 12,670 delivered, with the neo generation (12,063 orders) now comfortably ahead of the original ceo family's 8,106. In September 2025 cumulative A320-family deliveries passed the 737's, taking 33 years to reach 10,000 deliveries against the 50 years the 737 needed. [1]
The A320's computer-mediated controls were controversial from close to the start. On 26 June 1988, a brand-new Air France A320 flying a low pass at an airshow near Habsheim, France, descended to about 30 ft instead of the planned 100 ft and struck trees at the end of the runway after a delayed application of go-around power; three of 136 aboard died. Captain Michel Asseline maintained that the flight control system's angle-of-attack protection prevented him from climbing away in time; the official BEA investigation attributed the crash to crew error - flying too low, too slow, with the engines at idle and go-around thrust applied late - rather than a system fault. [2]
A second accident sharpened the same debate. On 20 January 1992, Air Inter Flight 148, an A320-111, struck Mont Sainte-Odile in eastern France on approach to Strasbourg, killing 87 of 96 aboard. Investigators found the crew had left the autopilot in Vertical Speed rather than Flight Path Angle mode and entered '33' meaning a 3.3-degree descent; the system read it as 3,300 feet per minute, and the aircraft, lacking a ground-proximity warning system, flew into the mountain under control the whole way down. [3] Both accidents drove lasting changes to mode-awareness training and cockpit alerting across the industry, well beyond the A320 itself.
Across roughly four decades and tens of millions of flights, the family's overall safety record is strong - 0.095 fatal hull losses per million takeoffs as of 2023 - but a small number of losses have overshadowed it. On 15 January 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an A320-214, lost both engines to a bird strike shortly after departing New York LaGuardia and ditched in the Hudson River; Captain Chesley Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles got all 155 aboard out alive, an outcome credited partly to the fly-by-wire protections holding the aircraft in a controlled attitude during the landing. [1]
Two later losses were not accidents at all. On 31 October 2015, a bomb brought down Metrojet Flight 9268, an A321-231, over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, killing all 224 aboard - the family's deadliest single loss. On 24 March 2015, Germanwings Flight 9525's co-pilot locked the captain out of the cockpit and flew the A320-211 into the French Alps, killing all 150 aboard in a deliberate act; regulators briefly mandated two authorised crew in the cockpit at all times, a rule most European airlines had quietly dropped again by 2017. [4]
The family remains in full production and the backbone of short- and medium-haul flying worldwide, with roughly 7,499 aircraft still on order as of May 2026 and American Airlines, IndiGo and easyJet among its largest operators. [1] The most pressing current issue is not commercial but technical: after JetBlue Flight 1230 experienced a brief uncommanded descent on 30 October 2025, investigators traced the fault to intense solar radiation corrupting data inside the elevator aileron computer, and EASA issued an emergency airworthiness directive in November 2025 covering roughly 6,000 A320-family aircraft. [5]
Most affected aircraft needed only a three-hour software rollback to clear the fault; Airbus said around 900 older airframes would need a hardware fix instead, and warned operators to expect real operational disruption while the fleet worked through it. The episode is a reminder that even a control philosophy validated over four decades and tens of thousands of airframes can still surface a genuinely new failure mode - in this case, one nobody had connected to space weather until an airliner nearly proved it. The most numerous airliner family in the sky, so there is no need to hunt for one - filter by any of the type codes above and dozens will usually be airborne over any populated region. IndiGo (callsign IGO), easyJet (EZY) and American Airlines (AAL) between them fly hundreds; the A321XLR is the rarer sight, currently flown mainly by Iberia (IBE) and a handful of other long-haul operators.
