The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, four-engine wide-body airliner and the largest passenger aircraft ever to enter service, carrying more than 500 passengers on two full-length decks. It first flew in 2005 and entered service with Singapore Airlines in 2007; 251 were built before production ended in 2021.[1]
Emirates operates nearly half of all A380s built and has driven the type's unexpected second act: post-pandemic travel demand and delayed new-jet deliveries pulled dozens of stored aircraft back into service, and Emirates now plans to fly its A380 fleet to 2041.[2]
The A380 was Airbus's frontal assault on the last monopoly in commercial aviation: the Boeing 747's forty-year reign over the very-large-aircraft market. Studies for an 'A3XX' began in the early 1990s around a simple bet - that congested mega-hubs like Heathrow, Tokyo and Dubai would force airlines to move more people per slot, and that the answer was the biggest, most comfortable aircraft ever built.[1]
Boeing made the opposite bet: that passengers preferred flying point-to-point in smaller twins like the 777 and the future 787, bypassing hubs entirely. The two philosophies - hub-and-spoke giant versus long thin routes - would compete for two decades, and the A380 program was effectively the wager that Airbus lost gloriously.[1]
The program launched in December 2000 at an estimated €9.5 billion. By the end, development had consumed well over twice that, spread across a production run a quarter the size Airbus once projected.[1]
Building the A380 reshaped European industrial geography: wings from Wales, fuselage sections from Hamburg and Saint-Nazaire, tail from Cádiz, all converging on Toulouse by purpose-built ship, barge and the oversized 'Itinéraire à Grand Gabarit' road convoy - because no cargo aircraft could carry A380 parts.[1]
The prototype flew from Toulouse on 27 April 2005. Then came the crisis that defined the program: the German and Spanish plants had used incompatible versions of the wiring-design software, and the 330 miles of cabling in each aircraft wouldn't mate with fuselages built elsewhere. The two-year delay cost Airbus billions, several executives their jobs, and the program its momentum just as the 2008 financial crisis arrived to gut demand for four-engined giants.[1]
Singapore Airlines finally flew the first commercial service, Singapore to Sydney, on 25 October 2007 - with the inaugural's seats auctioned for charity and a media frenzy the industry hadn't seen since Concorde.[1]
The A380's numbers still read like typos: 853 passengers in an all-economy layout (though nobody flies one that way), a wing bigger than a basketball court, 22 wheels, and a maximum takeoff weight of 575 tonnes.[3] Yet the design's real achievement is how gently all that size behaves - approach speeds lower than a 747's, noise footprints small enough for night operations at strict airports, and a famously serene cabin.[1]
Size dictated everything around it. Airports spent billions on reinforced taxiways, double-decker jet bridges and A380-code gates; the aircraft's 79.75-metre wingspan was deliberately squeezed inside the 80-metre 'box' airports use as their largest category. The upper deck enabled the amenities that built the legend - shower spas on Emirates, bars on several carriers, first-class suites with doors.[1]
What it never got was a re-engine. The 'A380neo' Emirates lobbied for was studied and shelved: the order base couldn't justify it, and four engines - the configuration that made the size possible - had become the aircraft's economic curse in the age of efficient big twins.[1]
Fourteen airlines flew the A380, but the type's story is really the story of one: Emirates ordered 123 of the 251 built and constructed its entire Dubai mega-hub model around them. For everyone else the aircraft was a flagship rather than a fleet - loved by passengers, tolerated by accountants, and retired early by several.[4]
The pandemic looked like the end. Air France retired its fleet overnight, others sent aircraft to desert storage, and Airbus had already announced in 2019 that production would stop. The last A380 was delivered to Emirates in December 2021, closing the shortest production run of any major widebody.[1]
Then the comeback: travel demand roared back before new aircraft could be delivered, and the parked giants were suddenly the fastest capacity available. British Airways, Qantas, Singapore, Lufthansa and others brought A380s back; Global Airlines even launched a startup around second-hand ones. Emirates, meanwhile, is mid-way through a $2+ billion retrofit program and plans around 110 operational superjumbos through 2026, flying the type to 2041.[5][2]
As a business, the A380 never came close: roughly 251 aircraft against a break-even once pitched near 270 and early projections of 700+, with the development bill written off. Boeing's point-to-point bet won the argument, and no manufacturer has proposed a four-engine airliner since.[1]
As an aircraft, it won a different contest: two decades on, passengers still route itineraries specifically to fly it, and no cabin in the sky is quieter or roomier.[2]

A Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine on a Qantas A380 suffered an uncontained failure four minutes after takeoff from Singapore due to a manufacturing defect, with turbine disc shrapnel damaging the wing, fuel system, hydraulics and flight controls. The crew safely landed the aircraft back at Singapore with no injuries.
Air France Flight 007, taxiing out at New York JFK, clipped a stationary Delta Connection Bombardier CRJ-701 with its left wing and spun the smaller aircraft around. Nobody on either aircraft was injured, and video of the collision was widely broadcast.
An Air France A380's engine suffered an uncontained failure during cruise over the Atlantic near Greenland when its fan hub cracked from metal fatigue and detached, tearing away the air inlet. The aircraft diverted safely to Goose Bay, Canada, with no injuries.
