The Boeing 747 is a wide-body airliner and the first twin-aisle commercial aircraft, built by Boeing from 1968. It entered service with Pan Am in January 1970 and remained the largest passenger aircraft in the world for 37 years, until the Airbus A380 entered service in 2007.[1]
Boeing designed the 747 to double as a freighter, since its own engineers expected supersonic transports to eventually replace it on passenger routes; that shift never happened, and 747 freighters remain central to global air cargo today. The last of 1,574 built was delivered in January 2023, ending the longest production run of any wide-body airliner.[1][2]
The story starts with Pan Am's Juan Trippe, who wanted an airliner more than double the size of Boeing's own 707 to relieve growing congestion at major airports. Boeing agreed to build it, but hedged its bet: convinced that supersonic transports would eventually dominate premium passenger travel, Boeing designed the 747 so it could be easily converted into a freighter once passenger demand for a subsonic giant faded - hence the raised cockpit and short upper deck, which let a hinged nose swing open for straight-in cargo loading.[1]
That decision, made to hedge against a future that never arrived, is the entire reason the 747 looks the way it does. The supersonic future never displaced it; instead the 'safety net' passenger design became one of the most successful airliners ever built.[1]
Boeing assembled a team of roughly 4,500 engineers - nicknamed 'the Incredibles' - who designed the entire aircraft from a blank sheet in about 29 months, an extraordinarily short schedule for an aircraft of unprecedented scale. To build it, Boeing constructed the Everett factory in Washington state, which remains the largest building by volume on Earth.[1]
The prototype rolled out on 30 September 1968 and made its first flight on 9 February 1969. After a fast-tracked certification programme, the 747 entered service with launch customer Pan Am on 22 January 1970, flying New York to London.[3]
The 747's four-engine, twin-aisle layout was itself a novelty - nothing in commercial service had two aisles before it - and its scale forced airports worldwide to build new jet bridges, taxiways and terminal gates just to accommodate it. Successive variants steadily grew the type's capability: the -200 added range and power, the shortened SP chased ultra-long-haul routes, the -300 stretched the upper deck, and the -400 introduced a modern two-crew glass cockpit and distinctive winglets that became the type's most recognisable later silhouette.[1]
The final variant, the 747-8, re-winged and re-engined the airframe with General Electric GEnx turbofans borrowed from the 787 programme, stretching the fuselage to make it the longest commercial airliner ever built at the time of its 2011 debut, and pushing efficiency far beyond the original -100.[4]
The 747 opened intercontinental travel to a mass market that the 707 generation couldn't reach, and it became the definitive flagship aircraft for airlines worldwide through the 1970s, 80s and 90s - a status it held even as smaller, more efficient twinjets like the 777 and 787 gradually took over long, thin routes that no longer justified a four-engined giant.[5]
The aircraft's second life has been as a freighter. The 747-400F and 747-8F remain central to global air cargo thanks to their nose-loading door and large main-deck volume - a capability that became especially valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic, when 747 freighters carried enormous volumes of medical equipment and vaccines that would not fit through smaller aircraft's side cargo doors.[5]
Two specially modified 747-200Bs have carried the U.S. President as Air Force One since 1990, and the type has also served as NASA's Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and as the basis for several government VIP and military transport conversions around the world.[1]
Boeing delivered the last 747 ever built - a 747-8 Freighter for Atlas Air - on 31 January 2023, closing a 54-year, 1,574-aircraft production run, the longest of any wide-body airliner.[2]
Passenger service is winding down gradually rather than ending all at once: Lufthansa remains by far the largest operator of 747 passenger variants and plans to keep flying its 747-8s well into the 2030s, while Korean Air has set 2031 as its target retirement date for its 747-8i fleet. Freighter variants have a much longer runway - 747-400F and 747-8F aircraft are expected to remain in heavy air-cargo service for years to come, since no in-production aircraft fully replaces their nose-loading capability.[6]

Hijacked out of Amsterdam by PFLP militants during the Dawson's Field hijackings and flown to Cairo, where the passengers and crew were evacuated before the aircraft was blown up on the ground. It was the first hull loss of a Boeing 747.
The first fatal accident involving a 747. The crew took off from Nairobi without the leading-edge slats extended because the pneumatic system had not been switched on; the aircraft stalled and struck the ground seconds after lifting off.
A lightning strike ignited fuel vapour in the left wing of an Iranian Air Force 747 freighter near Madrid, causing the wing to fail in flight. All on board were killed.
Two Boeing 747s - KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736 - collided on a fog-bound runway at Los Rodeos Airport, killing 583 people. It remains the deadliest accident in aviation history.
Shortly after a night takeoff from Bombay the captain's attitude indicator failed; disoriented over a featureless sea, he rolled the aircraft into a steep bank and it struck the water. All 213 aboard died.

A faulty repair to the rear pressure bulkhead led to an explosive decompression and loss of hydraulic control on a 747SR. The crew fought the crippled aircraft for 32 minutes before it crashed into Mount Takamagahara, killing 520 of 524 aboard - the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history.
Four Abu Nidal gunmen seized the aircraft on the ground at Karachi. After a seventeen-hour standoff the cabin lights failed and the hijackers opened fire on the passengers; twenty people were killed before the survivors escaped through the emergency exits.

A faulty cargo-door latch let the forward door burst open at 22,000 ft out of Honolulu, tearing away a section of fuselage and ejecting nine passengers. The crew shut down two damaged engines and landed back at Honolulu with everyone else alive.
All four engines flamed out in an ash cloud from Alaska's Mount Redoubt. The crew restarted them after falling more than 14,000 feet and landed safely at Anchorage; the ash damage cost around $80 million to repair.

A brand-new 747-400 touched down long on Kai Tak's runway 13 in a typhoon's tail winds and ran off the end into Victoria Harbour. All 396 aboard were rescued; the aircraft was written off.
Ramzi Yousef planted a small nitroglycerin bomb under a seat as a rehearsal for the Bojinka plot. It killed the passenger sitting there and damaged the controls, but the crew landed at Okinawa with the other 292 people aboard alive.

On a night non-precision approach to Guam in rain, with the airport's glideslope out of service, the aircraft struck Nimitz Hill three miles short of the runway. 229 of the 254 people aboard were killed.
A lone hijacker forced his way into the cockpit after takeoff from Tokyo, stabbed and killed the captain and took the controls. Off-duty crew overpowered him and the first officer recovered the aircraft from a steep descent.

A pallet of lithium-ion batteries caught fire in the main deck twenty minutes out of Dubai. Smoke filled the cockpit and disabled the crew's oxygen and controls; both pilots were killed when the freighter crashed. The accident reshaped the rules on carrying batteries by air.
A fire in the main-deck cargo, which included lithium batteries and flammable liquids, destroyed the freighter over the sea near Jeju Island. Both pilots were killed.
Armoured vehicles broke loose in the hold on takeoff from Bagram, shifting the centre of gravity aft and damaging the hydraulics. The freighter stalled and crashed just past the runway, killing all seven crew; the crash was captured on dashcam video.
The freighter descended through fog well past the runway threshold at Bishkek, went around too late and crashed into a village beside the airport. All four crew and 35 people on the ground were killed.
On landing at Hong Kong the number-four engine spooled up to near-full thrust, swinging the freighter off runway 07L. It struck an airport security vehicle and went into the sea; the four crew survived but both security staff in the vehicle were killed.
