The de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter is a twin-engine turboprop STOL aircraft designed for short-field and bush operations. It first flew in 1965 and can be fitted with wheels, floats or skis, letting it operate from gravel bars, glaciers, lakes and short unpaved strips.[1]
Production ended in 1988 but resumed in 2007 after Viking Air, holder of the type certificate, judged continuing demand strong enough to restart the line - one of the few aircraft ever returned to production this way. It remains in production today as the Series 400 and Classic 300-G.[2]
De Havilland Canada spent the 1950s perfecting bush aircraft - Beaver, then Otter - and the DHC-6 was their logical multiplication: two of Pratt & Whitney Canada's brand-new PT6 turboprops on a stretched, fixed-gear, high-wing airframe with STOL wings, aimed at operators who needed Otter manners with commuter capacity and engine-out safety.[1]
It flew on 20 May 1965 and found two markets at once: the bush and float operators it was designed for, and - unexpectedly - the new 'commuter airline' boom in the United States, where its nineteen seats fit the regulations and its short-field manners fit downtown STOLports. The Twin Otter became the world's default third-level airliner.[1]
The Twin Otter's genius is honest STOL: a big straight wing with double-slotted flaps, fixed tricycle gear that swaps to floats, skis, wheel-skis or tundra tyres in a shift, and PT6 reliability in places where a mechanic is a radio call and a day's flying away. Takeoff and landing runs under 400 metres - far less lightly loaded - open strips nothing else with two engines can use.[2]
It is deliberately simple to keep flying: unpressurised, mechanical, tolerant of cold-soak at -50°C and coral-dust at +40°C, field-repairable, and forgiving enough that it serves as half the world's introduction to multi-engine bush flying. The Series 400 restart added modern Honeywell avionics while changing the airframe as little as possible - operators insisted.[2]
The type's postings read like an atlas of difficult places: Maldivian float fleets running the world's largest seaplane operation, Kenn Borek's red-and-white machines working both polar regions, island-hoppers in the Caribbean and Pacific, skydiving lifts on every continent, and parapublic fleets from the Chilean fjords to the Norwegian coast. Some 30+ militaries have flown it, including the U.S. Army's new grey Grand Caravans-with-attitude for Arctic work.[1]
Its legend is polar. Ski-equipped Twin Otters supply Antarctic field camps, and twice - in 2001 and 2016 - Kenn Borek crews flew midwinter medical evacuations from the South Pole itself: minus 60°C, months of darkness, landings by flare-light at the coldest airstrip on Earth. No other aircraft type has ever done it.[3]
Around 985 classic-build aircraft were followed by 150+ Viking/DHC Series 400s; hundreds of fifty-year-old examples still earn daily revenue, kept ageless by unlimited-life structural programs and the absence of any substitute.[2]
The resurrection is the singular chapter: production ended in 1988 when parent policy moved on, but values of used Twin Otters kept climbing until Viking Air - holder of the type certificates - concluded the absurd was commercial sense and relaunched manufacture in 2007. First new-build Series 400 flew in 2010; the De Havilland Canada name returned to the program in 2019, and the refreshed Classic 300-G keeps the order book alive into the 2030s.[2]
Nineteen seats, two PT6s, fixed gear: the specification has survived sixty years essentially intact because every attempt at a 'Twin Otter replacement' - including several by its own manufacturers - discovered the replacement was a Twin Otter.[1]
The Twin Otter is infrastructure disguised as an aircraft: for hundreds of communities from Nunavut to the Nepali hills, it is the road, the ambulance, the mail van and the school bus. Aviation measures most types in performance; this one is measured in places that exist on the network only because it exists.[2]
Its production resurrection remains nearly unique in aviation history - the market simply refused the aircraft's retirement, and sixty years after first flight the Twin Otter is still building the order book, still flying the South Pole logbook and still keeping the Lukla schedule[4].[1]
Filter Flightradar24's aircraft-type field for "DHC6" or search by operator callsign - Trans Maldivian Airways' seaplane sightseeing hops rarely appear (many are flown below radar/ADS-B coverage over remote atolls), but overland regional and commuter operators such as Kenn Borek Air, Loganair, and Cape Air-style bush carriers are commonly visible on domestic routes.
