Concorde is a supersonic passenger airliner developed jointly by Britain and France under a 1962 treaty, and the only supersonic airliner to enter sustained commercial service. It first flew in 1969, entered service in 1976, and cruised at Mach 2.04 - twice the speed of sound.[1]

Only twenty were built, fourteen of them for airline service split evenly between British Airways and Air France; all fourteen survive today in museums. Concorde was retired in 2003 after the only fatal accident in its history, the July 2000 crash of Air France Flight 4590, and rising costs following the September 2001 attacks.[1][2]

Origins & Concept

In the late 1950s, Britain and France each concluded that the future of long-haul aviation was supersonic - and each discovered the development bill was beyond one country. The solution was unprecedented: the Anglo-French treaty of 29 November 1962, an international agreement (not a mere contract) binding both governments to build a supersonic transport together, with no exit clause. That clause would later keep the project alive through every attempt to kill it.[1]

Even the name was diplomacy. 'Concorde' - harmony, in French spelling with the final 'e' - caused a minor British political row until minister Tony Benn declared the 'e' stood for excellence, England, Europe and the entente. The name fit an aircraft that was genuinely half-British, half-French: airframes assembled in both Toulouse and Filton, engines by Rolls-Royce and Snecma together.[1]

The competition folded early. America's Boeing 2707 SST was cancelled in 1971 before a prototype flew; the Soviet Tu-144 beat Concorde into the air by two months but crashed at the 1973 Paris Air Show and never sustained passenger service[3]. Concorde would carry the supersonic age alone.[1]

Development

Prototype 001 flew from Toulouse on 2 March 1969 in the hands of André Turcat; the British 002 followed from Filton five weeks later. Mach 1 fell that October, Mach 2 in November 1970, and the flight-test program grew into one of the most exhaustive ever mounted - some 5,000 hours, more than any airliner before it, much of it supersonic.[1]

Then the orders evaporated. At its peak the order book held options from Pan Am, TWA, United and a dozen others - over 70 aircraft. The 1973 oil crisis quadrupled fuel prices for an aircraft that burned a ton of fuel per seat crossing the Atlantic, and sonic-boom bans closed almost every overland route. One by one the options lapsed, until only the two state airlines that couldn't refuse - British Airways and Air France - remained.[1]

Twenty airframes were built: six prototypes and development aircraft, and fourteen production machines that entered service, seven per airline. The production lines closed in 1979, and every government involved wrote off the development cost as the price of the attempt.[1]

Design & Engineering

Concorde cruised at Mach 2.04 - not in a dash, but for hours at a stretch, which no combat aircraft of its day could match. The slender ogival delta wing generated the vortex lift that made low-speed flight possible without flaps or slats; the price was a nose-high landing attitude so extreme the entire nose section drooped hydraulically so the pilots could see the runway.[1]

Four Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 turbojets - descendants of the Vulcan bomber's engines - gave it the extraordinary ability to supercruise, though reheat was needed to punch through the transonic drag rise. The intakes were the secret masterpiece: computer-controlled ramps slowed intake air from Mach 2 to subsonic in the space of a few metres, and contributed most of the thrust at cruise.[1]

Sustained Mach 2 heated the skin past 100°C, stretching the airframe by up to ten inches in flight; fuel was pumped between trim tanks to track the shifting centre of pressure. The cabin, for all the glamour, was narrow and loud - and nobody who flew in it much cared.[4]

Service History

Commercial service began with choreographed simultaneity on 21 January 1976: British Airways to Bahrain and Air France to Rio de Janeiro[5], departing at the same moment. The transatlantic routes that defined the aircraft followed once a bruising U.S. legal fight over noise ended - Washington in 1976, New York in late 1977.[1]

For a generation, Concorde was less an airliner than a private club at Mach 2: bankers making day-trips to Wall Street, celebrities, royalty, and - after BA repriced the product in the 1980s - a genuinely profitable niche flagship. Each airframe spent more time supersonic than every other aircraft in history combined, crossing the Atlantic in around three and a half hours, with the 1996 record standing at 2 hours 52 minutes 59 seconds.[1]

It was also, for 24 years, statistically the safest airliner flying: no fatal accidents from 1976 until the summer of 2000.[2]

Retirement

On 25 July 2000, Air France flight 4590 ran over a titanium strip shed by another aircraft on the Gonesse runway; the burst tyre hurled debris into a fuel tank, and the burning Concorde crashed into a hotel, killing all 109 aboard and four on the ground. The type's only fatal accident grounded the fleet for over a year while tanks were armoured with Kevlar and tyres redesigned.[2]

Service resumed on 7 November 2001 - into the aviation depression that followed 9/11. Premium traffic collapsed, maintenance costs climbed on a 1960s airframe, and when Airbus (successor to the original builders) withdrew type support, the end was set. Air France stopped flying in May 2003; British Airways' final scheduled service landed at Heathrow on 24 October 2003, three Concordes arriving in sequence as crowds lined every fence.[1]

The very last flight of any Concorde, on 26 November 2003, was a short ferry home: G-BOAF to Filton, the field where the British aircraft had been built - and where it remains, the centrepiece of a museum named Aerospace Bristol.[4]

Legacy

No paying passenger has flown supersonic since. Every production Concorde that entered service survives in a museum on either side of the Atlantic - Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh, Filton, Toulouse, Paris, New York, Seattle, Barbados among them - which is a retirement without parallel in commercial aviation.[4]

The successor race has finally, cautiously restarted. Boom Supersonic's XB-1 demonstrator became the first independently developed civil jet to break the sound barrier in January 2025, and the U.S. moved in late 2025 to end its half-century ban on overland supersonic flight for boomless designs. Boom's 64-80 seat, Mach 1.7 Overture airliner is targeted at service around the end of the decade, with around 130 orders and pre-orders from United, American and Japan Airlines.[6][7]

Whether Overture flies or slips like every paper SST before it, the benchmark hasn't moved since 2003: a delta-winged machine, drawn in the 1960s, that crossed the Atlantic faster than anything a ticket has bought since.[1]

    Air France Concorde F-BVFC blew two tyres on the takeoff roll at Washington Dulles; the debris punctured fuel tanks and severed hydraulic lines, and the aircraft returned leaking fuel at around 4 kg a second. Together with a second Dulles tyre failure a month later it prompted an NTSB warning that went unheeded until 2000.
