The Airbus A350 is a long-range wide-body twinjet and the first Airbus built largely from carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer. It is offered as the A350-900, typically carrying 300 to 350 passengers over 8,500 nmi, and the longer A350-1000, carrying 350 to 410 over 9,000 nmi, both powered exclusively by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. It first flew on 14 June 2013, was certified by EASA in September 2014 and the FAA two months later, and entered service with Qatar Airways on 15 January 2015. By August 2026, 734 of the 1,624 ordered had been delivered, 733 were in service with 38 operators, and the fleet had flown over 15 million hours on more than 1,400 routes with no fatalities and one hull loss. Airbus initially dismissed the Boeing 787 as a reaction to the A330 that needed no answer. When airlines pushed back it proposed the A330-200 Lite, an aerodynamic and engine refresh, then in December 2004 approved an A350 based on the A330 with a composite wing, new engines and an aluminium-lithium fuselage - two versions at 253 and 300 seats, launched industrially in October 2005 for about 3.5 billion euros. The response from the people who buy aircraft was blunt. In March 2006 ILFC president Steven Udvar-Hazy urged Airbus to go clean-sheet and called the strategy a band-aid reaction to the 787, a view echoed by GECAS; Singapore Airlines' chief executive said that having designed a new wing, tail and cockpit Airbus should have gone the whole hog and designed a new fuselage. [1]
Airbus did. On 14 July 2006 at Farnborough the redesigned aircraft was announced as the A350 XWB, for Xtra-Wide-Body, with a fuselage wide enough for nine economy seats abreast against the A330's eight, and within four days Singapore Airlines agreed to order 20. The board approved the -800, -900 and -1000 in December 2006. The price was two years of schedule and a development cost that rose from about $5.5 billion to roughly $10 billion, with Reuters putting the eventual total at $15 billion. The programme broke even in 2019. [1]
The airframe is 53 percent composite - the empennage, the wing box, covers, stringers and spars, and the fuselage skin, frames and keel beam - with 19 percent aluminium and aluminium-lithium, 14 percent titanium, 6 percent steel and 8 percent other materials. The composite frames carry aluminium strips to keep the fuselage electrically continuous so it can dissipate lightning strikes. The double-lobe fuselage is 5.97 m across externally and 5.61 m at armrest level, 12 cm wider than the 787's at a seated passenger's eye level, which is what buys the ninth seat and 45 cm economy seat width. Unlike the 787, Airbus kept a conventional bleed air system. [1]
The 64.75 m composite wing is common to every variant and stays inside the same ICAO Code E limit as the A330 and 777. It is swept 31.9 degrees for a Mach 0.85 cruise against a Mach 0.89 maximum operating speed, and uses an advanced dropped-hinge flap that lets the spoiler close the gap ahead of it, with inboard and outboard flaps deflecting together for variable camber and differentially for lateral load control - a limited morphing wing that trims the spanload continuously to cut fuel burn. Rolls-Royce won exclusivity: General Electric declined to develop a high-thrust variant that would compete with its GE90-powered 777s, and the Trent XWB has powered every A350 since, at 84,000 lbf on the -900 and 97,000 lbf on the -1000. EASA certified the A350-900 on 30 September 2014 and on 15 October approved it for 370-minute ETOPS - the first airliner cleared beyond 180 minutes before it had even entered service, covering 99.7 percent of the Earth's surface. Qatar Airways took the first aircraft on 22 December 2014 and flew the first service from Doha to Frankfurt on 15 January 2015. Early operations exposed the usual list: maintenance network software needed work, galley inserts were removed over leaks, and spurious bleed air overheat warnings were traced to a connector that had to be replaced with a gold-plated one. Zodiac Aerospace could not build business class seats fast enough, and Cathay Pacific ended up upgrading or replacing the seats in its earliest cabins. [1]
The numbers improved quickly. Operational reliability went from 97.8 percent in mid-2016 to 98.8 percent by June 2017 and 99.3 percent by February 2018; by June 2026 a fleet of 717 aircraft averaging 5.15 years old was running at 99.28 percent over three months, having carried more than 600 million passengers. Utilisation is high and sectors are long - Finnair was flying its aircraft over 20 hours a day to Bangkok within the first year, and Singapore Airlines has operated both the longest leg in the network and, at 160 nmi to Kuala Lumpur, one of the shortest. [1]
In August 2021 Qatar Airways found unusually degraded paint on A350s being repainted in a World Cup livery, grounded its fleet and refused further deliveries. The airline argued the surface flaws risked fuel tank ignition by degrading lightning protection over the wing tanks, and claimed $200,000 a day per grounded aircraft. EASA found that the degradation did not affect the structure or introduce other risks, and Qatar's own regulator was the only one to treat it as an airworthiness issue - though Reuters established that Finnair, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Lufthansa and Air France had all reported paint damage as early as 2016. [1]
Qatar Airways filed in the English courts on 20 December 2021 and Airbus responded by cancelling the airline's outstanding orders, which Flight International read as a sign Airbus was confident of its case. The two settled confidentially on 1 February 2023 before the hearing. The episode cost Airbus deliveries and publicity but left the aircraft's certification basis untouched, and Qatar Airways remains the launch operator of both variants and the largest A350-1000 customer. [1]
The A350's only hull loss came on 2 January 2024, when Japan Airlines Flight 516, an A350-941 registered JA13XJ, landed on runway 34R at Tokyo Haneda and struck a Japan Coast Guard Dash 8 that had entered the runway without clearance. Both aircraft caught fire. All 379 people aboard the A350 - 367 passengers and 12 crew - got out through three of the eight slides in about 11 minutes, with 17 injured, while the cabin announcement system had failed and crew used megaphones. Five of the six on the Coast Guard aircraft were killed. Investigators found the Coast Guard captain had taken an instruction that his aircraft was number one as a takeoff clearance, and that neither the controller nor the JAL crew spotted the incursion; the composite fuselage held up well enough through the impact for the evacuation to happen at all. [4]
The other significant event was an engine failure. On 2 September 2024 a Cathay Pacific A350-1000 leaving Hong Kong suffered a Trent XWB-97 engine fire, and on 5 September EASA issued an emergency airworthiness directive mandating inspection of fuel manifold hoses across the A350-1000 fleet. An earlier directive in August 2017, reissued in July 2019, had required operators to power cycle early A350-900s before 149 hours of continuous power-on time after a software fault. Neither has produced a fatality; the fleet's record after more than 15 million flight hours is one hull loss and no deaths on board. [5] [6] [1]
Production has climbed back from the pandemic, when the rate fell from 9.5 aircraft a month to six. Airbus targeted nine a month by the end of 2025 and the pre-pandemic ten during 2026, with twelve a month planned by 2028 on the back of 281 net orders in 2023. The order book is heavily weighted to the future: 1,624 ordered against 734 delivered by August 2026, with Turkish Airlines the largest customer at around 110 aircraft and large unfilled orders from United, IndiGo, KLM, Riyadh Air, Air Europa and EVA Air. Two derivatives dominate the near term. The A350F freighter, launched in 2021 for up to 111 tonnes of payload and carrying the largest main deck cargo door ever built, completed ground vibration testing in June 2026 and is expected to make its first flight around 24 September 2026, with certification targeted for mid-2027 and first delivery in the second half of that year - already a year later than originally planned. The A350-1000ULR for Qantas first flew on 2 June 2026 and is due for delivery in April 2027 ahead of non-stop Sydney-London services. A re-engined A350neo has been studied since 2018 but remains tied to engine developments that have not arrived, and Rolls-Royce holds an exclusive agreement to supply A350-900 engines until 2030. The A350 is easy to catch because it dominates the longest scheduled sectors: Singapore Airlines flights to New York and Newark (callsign SIA), Qantas Project Sunrise testing from 2026, and the Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific and Air France long-haul networks. A35K is the rarer of the two codes and concentrated with Qatar Airways, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Japan Airlines.

The prototype A350-900, registered F-WXWB, flew for four hours from Toulouse-Blagnac, reaching Mach 0.8 at 25,000 ft and opening a 2,500-hour flight test campaign across five aircraft.
EASA approved the A350-900 for 370-minute ETOPS, allowing it to fly more than six hours from a diversion airport on one engine, and making it the first airliner cleared beyond 180 minutes before entering service. The approval covers 99.7 percent of the Earth's surface.
EASA issued a directive requiring operators to power cycle early A350-900s before 149 hours of continuous power-on time, following a software fault. It was reissued in July 2019.
Singapore Airlines began non-stop Singapore to New York services with the A350-900ULR, averaging 18 hours 45 minutes. The variant carries 24,000 more litres of fuel than a standard -900 and is rated to 9,700 nmi.

Iberia received the 500th A350, an A350-900 registered EC-NXD, which was also the first aircraft built to the new production standard bringing a 3 tonne MTOW increase, a 1.2 tonne weight reduction and a wider cabin.

MSN 707, the first A350-1000ULR for Qantas, flew from Toulouse, beginning a certification campaign of around 80 flight hours covering the new 20,000-litre rear centre fuel tank and its systems. It later flew a 24-hour, 23,100 km sector from Melbourne to Toulouse.
