The An-124 Ruslan is a four-engine, high-wing strategic freighter designed by the Antonov bureau in Kyiv to give Soviet Military Transport Aviation the heavy airlift it lacked. Design work began in 1971 under the internal designation Izdeliye 400, the prototype flew on 24 December 1982, and the type entered service in 1986 with the NATO reporting name Condor. [1]
Fifty-seven were built between 1982 and 2004, and it remains the heaviest cargo aircraft in operation, carrying 120 tonnes through a hinged nose and a rear ramp at a maximum takeoff weight of 886,258 lb. By 2013 the type had visited 768 airports in more than 100 countries. Production ended long before demand did, and the 2022 invasion of Ukraine split the surviving fleet along a political line that has yet to be resolved. [1] [2]
Soviet heavy airlift in the 1970s topped out at the An-22 turboprop, which could not move the largest items the Ground Forces and the space programme needed shifted. Antonov began design work in 1971 on a jet freighter roughly matched to the American C-5 Galaxy, and produced an aircraft of similar layout and greater payload, though with a conventional empennage in place of the C-5's T-tail. The result was, at the time, the heaviest aircraft in the world. The design also carried more composite material than any previous Soviet aircraft, with carbon fibre accounting for about 5 percent of structural weight alongside extensive use of titanium in the cargo floor and load paths. The type was granted civil certification on 30 December 1992, which is what allowed a military airlifter to become a commercial charter aircraft. [1]
Loading dictated the airframe. The entire nose section hinges upward and the tail has its own ramp, so vehicles can be driven in one end and out the other rather than reversed, and the landing gear kneels to lower the nose and flatten the ramp angle. The gear spreads the aircraft's weight across 24 wheels on five twin-wheel legs per side, which is what allows an aircraft of this mass onto runways not built for it. Two overhead travelling cranes rated at 30 tonnes and winches good for 120 tonnes make the aircraft self-loading at fields with no equipment. [1]
The hold measures 118 by 21 by 14 ft 5 in, and its titanium floor is what lets the aircraft take concentrated point loads that would punch through an aluminium deck. Four Progress D-18T turbofans of 51,000 lbf each drive it, and the flight deck is worked by a crew of eight including a navigator and a radio operator. Range falls away sharply with weight: 2,300 mi at maximum payload against 8,700 mi empty, and 4,500 nmi at an 80-tonne load, so a genuinely full aircraft usually means a fuel stop - which is why Prestwick, Shannon and Bangor recur so often in An-124 flight tracks. Takeoff needs 3,000 m of runway, though it lands in 900 m. [1]
Around 26 aircraft reached Soviet Military Transport Aviation before 1991, after which the fleet split between Russia and Ukraine along with everything else. What followed was unusual: rather than being scrapped or mothballed, the aircraft found a commercial market that had never existed before, because nothing in Western service could carry what they could. Antonov Airlines and Volga-Dnepr built businesses on it, and by late 2020 three civil operators between them flew 20 aircraft: Volga-Dnepr 12, Antonov Airlines 7 and Maximus Air Cargo 1. [1]
NATO became a customer of its own former adversary's airlifter. Under the Strategic Airlift Interim Solution, six An-124-100s were chartered from Antonov Airlines and Volga-Dnepr on behalf of 18 member nations, with two kept permanently at Leipzig/Halle - the arrangement that filled the alliance's outsize airlift gap until enough C-17s arrived. The An-124's commercial niche is defined by loads that will not fit in anything else. It moved the first IE 201 Class diesel-electric locomotive from Canada to Ireland in June 1994, the Obelisk of Axum back to Ethiopia in April 2005, the first Bombardier Movia railcar for the Delhi Metro in February 2009, skimmer boats for the Deepwater Horizon cleanup in July 2010, and a Putzmeister concrete pump to Japan in April 2011 to pour water onto the Fukushima reactors. Industrial logistics is the steady business underneath the headline cargoes - an 87,000 lb press tool flown from Michigan to England in May 2018 to restart Ford F-150 production after a supplier fire, satellites for Space Systems Loral, Atlas V hardware for United Launch Alliance and payload fairings for SpaceX. The type also holds two records set in its first years: 171,219 kg lifted to 2,000 m in July 1985, and 20,151 km flown without refuelling in 25.5 hours in May 1987. [1]
On 24 February 2022 Russian forces attacked Antonov Airport at Hostomel, destroying UR-82009 along with the sole An-225 and wrecking the company's premises. Five Antonov An-124s that happened to be away on missions were rehomed at Leipzig; a sixth, UR-82073, was sitting in Kyiv completely disassembled for an upgrade. Volga-Dnepr's 12 aircraft were shut out of Western airspace by sanctions almost immediately, one of them impounded at Toronto Pearson after Canada closed its airspace to Russian operators and formally seized in June 2023. The immediate effect was a global shortage of outsize airlift, in a market where operators had been able to name their price for loads nothing else could take. The recovery of UR-82073 shows what the split costs in practice: Antonov had to replace Russian-built components that could no longer be maintained with Ukrainian and Western equivalents before the aircraft could fly again. Built in 1994 with over 21,000 hours and 5,500 flights behind it, it left Kyiv for Leipzig on 11 July 2025, more than three years after the work stopped. [3] [4]
Restarting production has been announced repeatedly and never achieved. A Russo-Ukrainian joint venture was agreed in April 2008 for a 2008 restart; United Aircraft Corporation cancelled its 2009-2012 plans; President Medvedev ordered a resumption in late 2009 with 20 aircraft anticipated; and the whole effort stopped in August 2014 when relations between the two countries broke down. In January 2019 Antonov announced it would restart without Russian involvement. Nothing has been laid down. [1]
Both sides have since aimed at a successor rather than a restart, and each faces the same problem from opposite directions: the engines are Ukrainian and the largest customer base was Russian. Russia's TsAGI-designed An-124-102 Slon would use domestic PD-35 engines instead of the D-18T; Antonov has no engine problem but no production line either. In the meantime the surviving airframes carry loads nothing else can take, and every one lost is a permanent reduction in world capacity. [1] [3]
Antonov Airlines aircraft are the reliable ones to catch: filter for type A124 and watch Leipzig/Halle, which has been the company's operating base since 2022, with Prestwick, Shannon and Bangor recurring as transatlantic fuel stops. Registrations are UR-82007 through UR-82073. Russian-registered RA-82xxx aircraft appear far less often, since sanctions have shut them out of most Western airspace.

Antonov's USSR-82002 was lost near Kyiv when the nose cargo door failed during a high-speed descent, causing a total loss of control. Eight of the nine crew on board were killed.
Aviastar Airlines' RA-82071 struck a mountain at around 11,000 ft near Kerman in Iran, killing 17 people on board.
RA-82069, an Aeroflot aircraft operated by Ajax Cargo, crashed during a go-around at Turin. Four people were killed.
Russian Air Force RA-82005 came down into a residential area of Irkutsk shortly after takeoff. All 23 on board and 45 people on the ground were killed - the deadliest accident involving the type.
Volga-Dnepr's RA-82042 suffered an uncontained engine failure after takeoff from Novosibirsk, ran off the runway on the return landing and collapsed its nose gear. Nobody was hurt. Volga-Dnepr grounded its entire An-124 fleet on 25 November for engine inspections, returning the first aircraft to service on 29 December.
Antonov Airlines' UR-82009 was destroyed by Russian artillery during the battle for Antonov Airport at Hostomel on the opening day of the full-scale invasion, alongside the company's sole An-225 Mriya. Five other An-124s that were away on missions were rehomed at Leipzig.
A Russian-registered An-124 that had been stranded at Toronto Pearson since Canada closed its airspace to Russian operators in February 2022 was formally seized by the Canadian government.
An-124 UR-82073, left completely disassembled at Sviatoshyn near Kyiv when the invasion began, flew from Kyiv to Leipzig after Antonov replaced Russian-built components with Ukrainian and Western equivalents. Built in 1994, it had logged over 21,000 flight hours and 5,500 flights before the work began.
