The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft built for the US Air Force and allied air forces. It can carry a main battle tank across oceans and land it on unpaved airstrips as short as 3,500 feet, combining strategic range with tactical short-field performance.[1]
Development nearly collapsed under cost overruns and test failures in 1993, but the C-17 went on to become one of the most valued military aircraft of its era. Boeing built 279 before production ended in 2015, and nine air forces still fly it, including the US, UK, Australia and NATO's shared Heavy Airlift Wing.[2]
The requirement was a genuine paradox: the airlift studies of the late 1970s wanted C-141 speed and range, C-5-class loads, and C-130 runway manners - three aircraft's virtues in one airframe. McDonnell Douglas won the C-X competition in 1981 with a design built around externally blown flaps: engine exhaust blasted across huge slotted flaps to generate lift a conventional wing couldn't, buying short-field performance at outsize weights.[1]
Development nearly killed it. First flight slipped to 1991, a wing test failure and billion-dollar overruns put the program one bad review from termination in 1993, and the fleet was provisionally capped at 40. What saved it was the aircraft itself: once squadrons started flying, every operational test rewrote the argument.[1]
The C-17's party tricks all trace to the powered-lift wing and a landing gear built like mining equipment: approach at absurdly low speed with 40+ tons aboard, plant onto 3,500 feet of dirt using thrust reversers that can also back the aircraft up a ramp or execute a three-point turn on a runway 90 feet wide. Loadmasters get a C-5-width cargo box (an M1 Abrams, three Apaches, or 102 paratroopers) with C-130 accessibility.[2]
It was also the first airlifter designed cockpit-first for two pilots and a loadmaster - fly-by-wire, HUDs and a stick rather than a yoke, crew workload automated down from the five-person flight decks of its predecessors. Fully loaded, three people move 85 tons across the planet.[3]
Since 1995 the Globemaster has been the West's crisis reflex: Bosnia and Kosovo, the opening nights of Afghanistan (including combat airdrops at intercontinental range), Iraq, earthquake and tsunami relief from Haiti to Japan, Ebola response, COVID vaccine lifts - the aircraft that arrives first with the most, wherever the news is worst.[2]
Its defining image came in August 2021 at Kabul: C-17s lifting out against the airport's collapse, one departing with 823 Afghan evacuees aboard - the type's record load of human beings and among the most photographed military flights of the century. The evacuation moved over 124,000 people, most of them on Globemasters.[4]
Nine air arms fly it - the USAF's ~220 leading the UK, Australia, Canada, India, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait and NATO's shared Heavy Airlift Wing - and all of them, publicly and repeatedly, wish they had bought more while they could.[3]
From near-cancellation, the program became a procurement redemption story: McDonnell Douglas (Boeing from 1997) rebuilt management and quality, the cap rose from 40 to 120 to an eventual 279 aircraft, and reliability settled among the fleet's best. The last Globemaster rolled out of Long Beach in November 2015, closing California's great airframe-assembly era after 100 years.[1]
Nothing replaced it - literally. The production tooling is gone, restart studies price a new line in the tens of billions, and the USAF's answer to 'what follows the C-17' remains, officially, keeping the C-17 flying healthily into the 2040s and beyond. Like the B-52 before it, the Globemaster's successor is scheduled to be itself.[2]
The C-17 changed what political leaders believe is possible: brigades moved in days, aid landing inside 48 hours, evacuations counted in the hundreds of thousands.[2]
Its cautionary lesson is stark: industrial capability, once closed, stays closed. The most useful airlifter ever built stopped production with air forces still queueing to buy - and a generation of planners now studies the C-17 line's closure as the mistake not to repeat.[1]

A USAF C-17 ran off the runway while landing at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, damaging its nose and right main landing gear. There were no injuries and the runway reopened within 30 hours.
A USAF C-17 crashed during a low-altitude aerobatic practice for an upcoming airshow at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, after the pilot exceeded the aircraft's performance envelope in a steep climbing turn and stalled. All four crew were killed.
A C-17 from the 437th Airlift Wing landed at Charleston International Airport with a collapsed nose landing gear. No injuries were reported.
