The Blackburn Buccaneer is a British two-seat, twin-engine carrier-borne strike aircraft, designed to attack ships at very low level with conventional or nuclear weapons. It first flew on 30 April 1958 and entered Royal Navy service on 17 July 1962; 211 were built.[1]
It was rejected by the RAF as too slow, adopted by it anyway after the supersonic alternatives were cancelled, and finished its career designating targets for Tornados in the 1991 Gulf War. The last were withdrawn in March 1994.[1]
The Buccaneer exists because of a class of Soviet warship. The Sverdlov-class cruisers entering service in the early 1950s threatened Atlantic merchant shipping, and the Royal Navy concluded that building cruisers to match them was the expensive answer; a carrier aircraft that could sink one was the cheap one. Naval Staff Requirement NA.39, issued in June 1952, asked for a two-seat aircraft able to fly at 550 knots at sea level with a 400-nautical-mile low-level combat radius, carrying 8,000 lb of weapons including a nuclear bomb.[1]
The low-level requirement drove everything. Flying fast at sea level keeps an aircraft under a ship's radar horizon until very late, but it means punching through dense air, which demands strength rather than finesse, and it rules out the light structures a high-altitude design can use. Blackburn's B-103, designed by Barry Laight, won the tender in July 1955 and was built accordingly - heavy, immensely strong, and shaped for one flight regime rather than for versatility.
Three solutions define the aircraft, and each follows from the last. Area ruling - the pinched 'coke bottle' waist - cut transonic drag at sea level. Boundary layer control solved the resulting problem: an aircraft with a wing small enough to be efficient at 500 knots at 100 feet has no business landing on a carrier, so high-pressure air bled from the engines is blown over the wings and tail surfaces to re-energise the airflow and cut the stalling speed to something a deck can absorb. The wing could then stay small.[1]
The rotating bomb bay follows from the same regime. Conventional bomb doors opening into a 500-knot airstream at low level are a structural problem and a drag penalty, so the entire bay floor rotates about the fuselage axis, carrying the weapons outside as it turns. It was later noticed that the arrangement also keeps the weapons hidden from radar until release. The split airbrake in the tail cone - two large hydraulic leaves that open like a clamshell - lets the aircraft decelerate hard in a dive attack and offsets the drag that boundary layer control produces. The nuclear weapon was delivered by toss bombing: the aircraft ran in at low level, pulled up sharply and released, lobbing the weapon forward while it turned away - the only way to drop a bomb from 100 feet and survive the detonation. Red Beard was carried on a purpose-built rotating bomb bay door.[1]
Boundary layer control has a cost, and the first production version paid it. Bleeding enough air off two de Havilland Gyron Junior turbojets of 7,100 lbf to blow the wings left so little thrust that a fully fuelled and armed S.1 simply could not take off. Crews launched light and topped up from a buddy tanker once airborne - an operational workaround for an aerodynamic bill. Worse, losing an engine on take-off in an aircraft with that little margin was frequently unsurvivable, and after two accidents in December 1970, one an uncontained failure that killed a navigator, the remaining S.1s were grounded for good.[1]
The Rolls-Royce Spey fixed it. The S.2, introduced in 1965, had roughly 40 percent more thrust and burned less fuel, which both paid the blowing bill and left performance over. Every Fleet Air Arm squadron had converted by the end of 1966, and the S.2 became the first Fleet Air Arm aircraft to cross the Atlantic non-stop and unrefuelled. Every later mark descends from it.[1]
The RAF had assessed the Buccaneer in 1957-58 and turned it down: it was subsonic, and the service wanted the Mach 2 aircraft that GOR.339 promised. That aircraft was the TSR-2, cancelled in April 1965. Its replacement, the General Dynamics F-111K, was cancelled in January 1968 with none delivered. With no supersonic strike aircraft available and none affordable, the RAF took the aircraft it had rejected: No. 12 Squadron formed on the Buccaneer in October 1969, many airframes coming across from Royal Navy stocks.[1] It was described as an interim solution pending the Tornado, and flew for twenty-five years.
The fleet nearly ended early. During a Red Flag exercise in February 1980 a Buccaneer suffered catastrophic wing failure caused by fatigue cracking, killing its crew, and inspections found the problem across the fleet. The RAF cut from about 84 aircraft to 60, scrapped the rest, and disbanded a squadron that had been forming.[1] An aircraft designed for a hard life at low level had, unsurprisingly, been living one.
Six Buccaneers were readied and deployed in under 72 hours in January 1991, painted in desert colours and fitted with Pave Spike laser designator pods. The role had inverted: rather than flying at 100 feet, they worked at around 18,000 feet, marking targets for Tornado formations - typically two Buccaneers to four Tornados, each designator backing up the other against equipment failure. They flew 218 missions, dropped 48 laser-guided bombs of their own on targets of opportunity, and helped destroy about 20 road bridges, restricting Iraqi army movement.[1]
The end came from the Cold War finishing rather than from the aircraft wearing out. Tornado GR1s armed with Sea Eagle took over maritime strike, squadrons stood down through the early 1990s, and by mid-1993 only No. 208 Squadron still flew the type; it disbanded in March 1994. South Africa had retired its S.50s in 1991, after a considerably heavier combat record than any RAF Buccaneer accumulated: SAAF aircraft flew strike and close air support over Angola and Namibia through the 1970s and 1980s, including the 1978 Battle of Cassinga, where their ability to carry a heavy load a long way and stay on station longer than anything else available made them the aircraft covering the ground forces' withdrawal.[1] Around 27 complete airframes survive, three of them kept running and taxied at public events.[2]
No Buccaneer has flown since 1994 and none is airworthy, so none will appear on a tracking network. The three kept in running condition - at Cotswold Airport, Elvington and Tatenhill - perform fast taxi runs on published event days, which flight trackers do not show; the operators' own sites carry the dates.

The first B-103 flew from RAE Bedford. Twenty development aircraft had been ordered directly from the drawing board without a separate prototype batch.

Around 27 complete Buccaneers survive, almost all in the United Kingdom and South Africa, along with some two dozen nose sections and cockpits.
