The Blériot XI is a French single-engine monoplane designed by Louis Blériot and Raymond Saulnier in 1908-09. On 25 July 1909, Blériot flew one across the English Channel in 37 minutes, becoming the first person to cross it by heavier-than-air aircraft and winning a £1,000 prize offered by the Daily Mail.[1]
The flight made the Blériot XI the world's first mass-produced aeroplane, with 800-900 built for sportsmen, flying schools and early military air arms. Its layout - tractor propeller, monoplane wing, tail behind the pilot - became the template most conventional aircraft still follow.[2]
Blériot was aviation's great stubborn amateur: a headlamp manufacturer who poured his fortune into eleven successive flying machines - ornithopters, box-kite biplanes, tail-first canards - crashing most of them personally. Model XI, designed with engineer Raymond Saulnier in 1908, was the survivor's synthesis: a wire-braced monoplane with the engine in front and wing-warping lateral control in the Wright manner.[1]
Its unlikely saviour was the engine: the three-cylinder Anzani produced barely 25 hp and cooled itself badly, but it was light and just reliable enough - on the Channel morning, famously, a providential rain shower may have cooled the overheating cylinders mid-crossing. Marginal power, perfectly timed.[2]
The Daily Mail's £1,000 prize had turned the Channel into aviation's first great arena. Blériot's rival Hubert Latham had already ditched in the sea once; on 25 July, with the weather briefly clear, Blériot took off from Les Baraques at 4:41 a.m., left the escorting destroyer behind within minutes, and flew for a stretch with no land, no ship and no instruments in sight - 'alone, isolated, lost in the midst of the immense sea', as he described it.[3]
Thirty-seven minutes after France, he sideslipped through gusts onto Northfall Meadow by Dover Castle, smashing the undercarriage and propeller in a landing he cheerfully called adequate. The world's reaction was instant and geopolitical: if a hobbyist's 25-horsepower machine could cross the Channel, fleets and fortresses guarded nothing above sea level. Orders for the XI began within days - over a hundred within weeks.[3]
The XI is the conventional aeroplane's rough draft: tractor engine, monoplane wing, aft tail with elevator and rudder, main gear forward and tail-skid behind, pilot at the balance point. Almost every conventional aircraft built since shares this basic configuration.[2]
Construction was bicycle-shop honest: ash and bamboo longerons, wire bracing everywhere, rubber-cord shock absorbers on castoring wheels, fabric covering only what needed it (early machines left the rear fuselage bare-boned). Wing-warping demanded constant, physical flying - the XI rewarded strong wrists and punished inattention.[1]
Success industrialised Blériot overnight: his factory built 800-900 XIs in countless variants (more powerful Gnome rotaries, two-seaters, floatplanes), his flying schools trained a generation of pilots, and record-setters flew XIs first over the Alps (Geo Chavez, 1910, fatally on landing) and across half the world's firsts. Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly the Channel in one in 1912 - her feat drowned in the news cycle by Titanic.[1]
The XI even went to war twice before the World War - Italian machines over Libya in 1911 flew history's first military aeroplane reconnaissance and bombing - and when 1914 came, French, British and Italian squadrons took XIs to the front as artillery-spotters and trainers until faster types displaced them within the year.[1]
The Channel crossing did for aviation what no demonstration flight had: it converted the aeroplane from marvel to instrument, with strategic consequences legible to every government by breakfast. Blériot's company prospered into the SPAD fighters of WWI; his layout became simply how aeroplanes look.[2]
The original crossing machine hangs, still fabric-and-ash, in the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris[4], and airworthy XIs - including some genuine 1909-1914 originals, the oldest flying aeroplanes on Earth - still putter over vintage rallies, crossing the Channel again on anniversaries as the calmest possible reminder of the morning England stopped being an island.[2]
Original and reproduction Blériot XIs occasionally fly at heritage air displays in France and the UK, particularly around Channel-crossing anniversary events each July, but are not routinely tracked by modern transponder systems.

Pioneer French aviator Léon Delagrange was killed near Bordeaux when the wing of his Blériot XI failed in flight, an accident attributed to his fitting an overpowered engine that overstressed the airframe.
Former racing driver turned aviator Hubert Le Blon was killed crashing his Blériot XI at San Sebastián, Spain, becoming the type's second recorded fatality after Delagrange.
Jorge Chávez, having just completed the first flight across the Alps in a Blériot XI, crashed on final approach into Domodossola, Italy, and died days later of his injuries. The accident prompted manufacturers to strengthen the wing spars.
Following a string of Blériot XI wing failures, the French military temporarily banned monoplane types from service pending a redesign of the wing bracing wires.
America's first licensed female pilot and her passenger were thrown from her Blériot XI during an unexpected pitch manoeuvre at low altitude over Dorchester Bay, Boston, and both fell to their deaths; the aircraft itself glided down largely intact.
