The B-29 Superfortress is a four-engine, very long-range heavy bomber designed by Boeing for the United States Army Air Forces. It first flew on 21 September 1942, entered service on 8 May 1944, and was built in four main assembly plants - Boeing's own factories at Renton and Wichita, Bell's plant at Marietta and Martin's at Omaha - to a total of 3,970 aircraft. [1]

It was the most technically ambitious aircraft of the war and the most expensive American programme of it, costing around $3 billion against the Manhattan Project's $1.9 billion. Pressurised crew compartments, remotely controlled gun turrets aimed by analogue computers and a 3,250-mile range were all new to a production bomber. Almost all of it worked; the engines did not, and that shaped the type's whole career. [1]

Origins & Concept

Boeing began studying a pressurised long-range bomber in 1938 as a development of the B-17, before any requirement existed for one. The Air Corps issued a formal specification in December 1939 for a bomber that could carry a useful load far enough to matter in a Pacific war, and Boeing submitted its Model 345 on 11 May 1940. The design was ordered off the drawing board, with production tooling laid down before the prototype had flown. [1]

That decision is why the programme cost what it did. Four main assembly plants and thousands of subcontractors were committed to an aircraft whose systems were still being invented, and the bill reached roughly $3 billion - more than the atomic bomb project it would eventually deliver for. Unit cost worked out at $639,188 per aircraft in 1944 money, about $11.9M in today's terms. [1]

Design & Engineering

The B-29 was the first Allied production bomber with a pressurised cabin, developed with Garrett AiResearch. Two sealed compartments, fore and aft, were joined by a crawl tunnel running over the bomb bays, which stayed unpressurised so they could be opened in flight. The defensive armament was equally novel: four remotely controlled turrets and a tail position, aimed optically by gunners at sighting stations and computed by five interconnected General Electric analogue computers that corrected for range, airspeed, altitude and gravity drop. One gunner could take control of more than one turret at a time. [1]

The Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone was the part that did not work. Turbine blades failed at the temperatures the engine ran at in a climb, well above 1,500°F, and fires were frequent enough to be the type's defining hazard rather than an occasional fault - the second prototype was lost to one on 18 February 1943, killing Boeing's chief test pilot Edmund T. Allen, his crew, 20 workers on the ground and a firefighter. Adopting Vitallium, a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy, for the turbine components eventually made high-altitude running reliable, but the engine stayed the aircraft's limiting factor throughout the war. Getting It Into Combat

The aircraft reached squadrons long before it was fit to fight. Of nearly 100 B-29s delivered by late 1943, only 15 were airworthy, the rest waiting on modifications the production lines had not caught up with. General Henry Arnold moved factory personnel out to the modification centres in what became known as the Battle of Kansas, and 150 aircraft were made combat-ready between 10 March and 15 April 1944. The first missions were flown from bases in India and China under XX Bomber Command, with 77 aircraft raiding Bangkok on 5 June 1944 and 47 attacking the Imperial Iron and Steel Works at Yawata on 15 June - the first strike on the Japanese home islands since the Doolittle raid. Supplying those Chinese airfields over the Himalayas consumed more fuel than the raids delivered in bombs, and the effort was abandoned after the final China-based mission on 29 January 1945. Capturing Saipan, Guam and Tinian by August 1944 gave the Marianas airfields that made the campaign practical, and the 73rd Bomb Wing sent 111 aircraft against Tokyo from there on 24 November 1944. The Firebombing Campaign

High-altitude precision bombing did not work over Japan. Winds at 30,000 ft scattered bomb patterns, cloud hid the targets, and the R-3350 was at its least reliable in a heavy climb. From the Kobe raid of 4 February 1945 the campaign switched to night incendiary attacks flown low, with much of the gun armament and ammunition removed to carry more bombs. [1]

The raid of 9-10 March 1945 on Tokyo, Operation Meetinghouse, is the largest single act of destruction by conventional bombing on record. Of 339 B-29s launched, 282 reached the city and dropped 1,665 tons of E-46 cluster and M69 incendiary bomblets from between 2,000 and 2,500 ft. Around 15.8 square miles - a quarter of Tokyo - burned, and estimates of the death toll range from 75,000 to 125,000, most sources settling near 100,000. Twenty-seven aircraft were lost to anti-aircraft fire, mechanical failure and the updrafts thrown up by the fires themselves. From April 1945 the same aircraft also flew Operation Starvation, mining Japanese harbours and shipping lanes. [2] [1]

Silverplate, Hiroshima & Nagasaki

Delivering an atomic weapon needed a heavily modified aircraft. Silverplate B-29s had their turrets and armour stripped except at the tail, fuel-injected engines and reversible-pitch propellers fitted for performance and landing margin at weight, and the two bomb bays rebuilt into one compartment with British-designed release gear. Sixty-five were completed, flown by the 509th Composite Group from Tinian. [1]

Enola Gay, serial 44-86292, flown by Colonel Paul Tibbets, dropped the Little Boy weapon on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. Bockscar, serial 44-27297, flown by Major Charles Sweeney, dropped Fat Man on Nagasaki on 9 August. They remain the only aircraft to have delivered nuclear weapons in war, and both survive - Enola Gay at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center and Bockscar at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Korea, Second Careers & Legacy

B-29s flew about 20,000 sorties in Korea and dropped 220,000 short tons of ordnance, initially by day. The MiG-15 ended that. On 23 October 1951 - Black Tuesday - nine bombers of the 307th Bomb Group attacking Namsi airfield with 55 F-84 and 32 F-86 escorts were met by three Soviet MiG regiments of roughly 20 aircraft each; three B-29s were shot down and three more badly damaged in under fifteen minutes, and half the bomber crewmen involved were killed or wounded, the heaviest single-mission casualty toll of the war. The heavy bombers were withdrawn from daylight operations shortly afterwards and flew at night for the rest of the conflict. Korean War losses came to 78 aircraft, 57 of them to enemy action. Away from bombing, the airframe had a long second career. F-13 and RB-29 conversions flew photographic, weather and electronic reconnaissance; KB-29 tankers gave Strategic Air Command its first practical aerial refuelling, and the KB-29P introduced the Boeing flying boom that the US Air Force still uses. The re-engined B-50 carried the nuclear mission until the B-47 arrived. The last USAF B-29 was retired on 21 June 1960. Its most unexpected legacy was Soviet: four aircraft that came down in Soviet territory in 1944-45 were kept rather than returned, and copied almost rivet for rivet as the Tupolev Tu-4, of which 847 were built.     A B-29 flying a reconnaissance mission to the geographic North Pole and back to Ladd Field, Alaska, became lost and put down on a frozen lake in northern Greenland, about 280 miles north of Thule. All eleven crew survived unhurt and were evacuated. A privately funded team spent 1994-95 repairing the aircraft where it lay, but on 21 May 1995 a leaking auxiliary power unit fuel tank set fire to the rear fuselage during the takeoff attempt and the aircraft was destroyed.

    RB-29A 44-61999 'Over Exposed' of the 16th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron struck Higher Shelf Stones on Bleaklow while flying from RAF Scampton to Burtonwood, after descending too early through low cloud. All 13 on board were killed. Much of the wreckage still lies on the moor and a memorial was placed there in 1988.

    A B-29 carrying a Mark 4 nuclear bomb suffered a propeller failure on takeoff from Fairfield-Suisun Air Force Base in California, traced to an improper adjustment during maintenance two weeks earlier, and crashed when the landing gear would not retract. Nineteen people died - twelve crew and seven on the ground - among them Brigadier General Robert F. Travis. The bomb's high explosives detonated around twenty minutes after the crash, but it carried no fissile pit and there was no nuclear yield. The base was renamed Travis Air Force Base on 20 October 1950.

    Doc returns to the air after 60 years

    B-29 44-69972 'Doc' flew from Wichita for the first time in 60 years, having been recovered from the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake in 1998 and restored at the Boeing plant in the city where it was built. The baseline B-29 came from Wichita, Renton, Bell's Marietta plant and Martin's Omaha plant; the Renton-built B-29A used a slightly different wing centre-section and a marginally greater span. The B-29B, built at Marietta, deleted all the gun turrets except the tail position to save weight for low-level night incendiary work, gaining speed and bomb load in exchange for defensive fire.
SilverplateThe atomic-capable conversion, and the most heavily modified B-29 of the war. Silverplate aircraft had the gun turrets and armour removed except at the tail, later ones received fuel-injected R-3350-41 engines and Curtiss Electric reversible-pitch propellers, and the four-door bomb bay was rebuilt as a single 33-foot compartment with British Type G single-point releases. F-13 / RB-29The photographic reconnaissance conversion, carrying cameras in the rear fuselage in place of bomb load. F-13s mapped the Japanese targets that the bombing campaign then worked through, flying unarmed and high. Redesignated RB-29 after 1948, the type went on to fly photographic, weather and electronic reconnaissance well into the 1950s - the aircraft lost on Bleaklow in 1948 was one of them.
KB-29M / KB-29PThe tanker conversions that gave Strategic Air Command its first practical aerial refuelling capability. The KB-29M used a looped-hose system trailed between tanker and receiver; the KB-29P introduced the Boeing flying boom, operated from a station in the tail, which became the standard method for the US Air Force and remains so today. Washington B.1The RAF designation for B-29s loaned under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program, filling the gap between the wartime Lincoln and the jet-powered Canberra. Around 87 aircraft (sources vary between 70 and 88) equipped Bomber Command squadrons from March 1950, with the last returned in March 1954. No. 192 Squadron kept a small number for electronic intelligence work until 1958.
B-50 SuperfortressA postwar revision substantial enough to count as a different aircraft: a reinforced structure, an enlarged tail fin, and four Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radials of 3,500 hp in place of the troublesome R-3350s. Boeing built 370 between 1947 and 1953. It carried Strategic Air Command's nuclear mission until 1955, and tanker and weather versions flew on until 1965.

Sources differ slightly on the exact count - Wikipedia's dedicated survivors list runs to around 25 complete airframes against the 22 quoted in its main B-29 article - but the important figure is agreed: only two are airworthy, and both fly in the United States. Almost every survivor is American, with one in England and one in South Korea.
