The KC-135 Stratotanker is a four-engine aerial refuelling tanker and transport designed by Boeing for the United States Air Force. It first flew on 31 August 1956, entered service in June 1957, and 803 were built between 1955 and 1965. [1]

Seventy years on it still does the job it was bought for. The US Air Force operates 396 of them across the active force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, and the aircraft remains the backbone of American aerial refuelling while the KC-46 Pegasus arrives slowly to replace part of the fleet. Origins & the Dash 80

Both the KC-135 and the Boeing 707 descend from the Model 367-80, the private-venture jet transport demonstrator universally known as the Dash 80. That shared ancestry is why the two aircraft look alike, and why they are constantly confused, but the tanker is not a converted airliner: it has a narrower and shorter fuselage than the 707 and is structurally quite different. It also came first. [1]

Boeing gave the tanker the internal model number 717, a designation the company later attached to an entirely unrelated airliner. The first aircraft was delivered to Castle Air Force Base in California in June 1957, into a Strategic Air Command that had been refuelling its bombers from piston-engined KB-29s and KC-97s at speeds and altitudes that suited neither tanker nor receiver. A jet tanker fixed that mismatch. [1]

Design & Engineering

The aircraft is built around the Boeing flying boom, a telescoping tube with control surfaces flown by an operator lying prone in the tail, watching the receiver through a window directly. It is a rigid connection controlled by the tanker rather than the receiver, and it transfers fuel far faster than a hose and drogue - which is why it became the US Air Force standard and why refuelling navy and allied probe-equipped aircraft needs a drogue adapter fitted to the boom. The KC-135R carries 200,000 lb of transferable fuel and can also take 83,000 lb of cargo or 37 passengers, which is what makes it a tanker-transport rather than a pure tanker. Crew is three: two pilots and the boom operator. An aeromedical evacuation mission adds a five-person medical crew of two flight nurses and three technicians. [2]

Service History

Vietnam is where the type proved what a jet tanker changes. Refuelling F-105s and F-4s on the way to and from targets, and B-52s on the long transits, put distant targets within reach and let fighters spend hours over the battlefield instead of minutes. The same pattern has repeated in every American air campaign since: Desert Storm, the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria all ran on tanker tracks. [1]

The KC-135 served Strategic Air Command from 1957 until the command was inactivated in 1992, after which most aircraft went to Air Mobility Command. Fifty-six KC-135Qs spent much of the Cold War doing one specialised job - carrying JP-7 in segregated tanks for the SR-71 Blackbird, which could not use standard jet fuel. Recent operations have been costly: two tankers collided over western Iraq in March 2026 during Operation Epic Fury, killing all six crew on one aircraft, and an Iranian missile strike on Prince Sultan Air Base days later damaged five more on the ground. Re-engining & the Second Life

The original J57 turbojets were the aircraft's limiting factor, and replacing them is what kept the fleet viable. A first programme in the 1980s re-engined 157 Reserve and Air National Guard aircraft with TF33 turbofans and nacelles taken from retired 707 airliners, producing the KC-135E - about 14 percent more efficient and good for roughly 20 percent more offload on a long flight. The real transformation was the CFM56. Over 500 aircraft were converted to KC-135R or KC-135T standard with engines of nearly double the J57's thrust, and the improvements compound: 50 percent greater fuel offload, 25 percent better fuel efficiency, 25 percent lower operating costs, 60 percent more range than a KC-135E, and takeoff noise down from 126 decibels to 99. An aircraft designed in the early 1950s became, in engine terms, a modern one. [1]

The Cost of an Old Fleet

New engines do not make an airframe young. Between 1993 and 2003 the amount of depot maintenance work the fleet required doubled, and the overhaul cost per aircraft tripled. Operating cost went from around $8,400 per flight hour in 1996 to about $11,000 by 2002, and by fiscal 2001 the fleet's total operation and support bill was around $2.2 billion a year. [1]

The safety record reflects a long life rather than a bad aircraft, but it is a real number: 52 Stratotankers have been lost to accidents since 1958, with 385 deaths. Several of those trace to specific systemic faults rather than crew error - a rudder control malfunction near Wichita in 1965 that killed 30 people including 23 on the ground, a run of overheated fuel-pump explosions in 1989, and a Dutch roll departure caused by a rudder power control unit failure that destroyed a tanker over Kyrgyzstan in 2013. Current Status & Outlook

The KC-46 Pegasus was selected in February 2011 to replace part of the fleet, and the first was delivered in January 2019, but it partially replaces the KC-135 rather than supplanting it. With 396 Stratotankers still on strength against a KC-46 programme of record of 263 aircraft, the older type will be flying for a long time yet - studies have concluded many airframes could remain viable until 2030, and some projections have individual aircraft reaching 80 years old by 2040. The export fleet has moved faster. France retired its C-135FRs between October 2020 and December 2023 and Singapore retired its KC-135Rs in June 2019, both replacing them with Airbus A330 MRTTs; fifteen of those released airframes were bought by the private operator Metrea and now fly contracted refuelling. Turkey and Chile still operate small fleets. The oldest active American example, 57-1419, was built in 1957 and has passed 22,300 flight hours. [1]

Easily the most trackable military aircraft in this database. KC-135s transmit routinely and appear on Flightradar24 in numbers, usually orbiting a refuelling track under a callsign like ESSO, SHELL, TEXACO or GOLD. RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk and Kadena in Japan are reliable places to watch, and the racetrack pattern over the North Sea or the Gulf is unmistakable once you have seen it once.

    Two KC-135Rs collided in friendly airspace over western Iraq during an Operation Epic Fury sortie. One crashed, killing all six crew; the other, 63-8017 of the 314th Air Refueling Squadron, made an emergency landing at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel having lost a large section of the top of its vertical stabiliser. CENTCOM confirmed the cause was neither hostile nor friendly fire.

KC-135AThe original production standard, 732 of which were built with four Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojets. It was loud, thirsty and short on thrust on a hot day, and its water-injection takeoffs left the trailing smoke plume the type was known for. Every surviving airframe has since been re-engined, so no KC-135A remains in tanker service.
KC-135EAn interim re-engining of 157 Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard tankers during the 1980s, using Pratt & Whitney TF33-PW-102 turbofans and their nacelles salvaged from retired 707 airliners. The result was about 14 percent more fuel-efficient than the KC-135A and could offload roughly 20 percent more fuel on a long sortie. All have since been retired or passed to export customers.
KC-135R / KC-135TThe definitive standard, and what over 500 aircraft were converted to from the 1980s onward using CFM56 turbofans of nearly double the J57's thrust. The gains were substantial: 50 percent greater fuel offload, 25 percent better fuel efficiency, 25 percent lower operating cost and 60 percent more range than a KC-135E. The KC-135T is the same conversion applied to the 54 surviving JP-7-capable KC-135Qs.
KC-135QFifty-six KC-135As modified to support the SR-71 Blackbird, which burned JP-7 rather than standard JP-4. The conversion added segregated tankage and plumbing so the aircraft could carry JP-7 for the receiver and its own fuel separately, without cross-contamination. When the Blackbird retired the survivors were re-engined as KC-135Ts and returned to the general tanker fleet.
RC-135 / EC-135 / OC-135The special-mission branches of the family, built on the same airframe but doing entirely different jobs. The RC-135 covers the Rivet Joint signals intelligence fleet and its relatives; the EC-135 provided airborne command posts including the Looking Glass alert aircraft; and the OC-135 flew Open Skies treaty observation missions. Several of these outlived the tanker variants they were converted from.
C-135F / C-135FRTwelve aircraft built new for France from 1964, the only KC-135s manufactured for an export customer rather than transferred second-hand. They were fitted with drogue adapters so they could refuel French probe-equipped aircraft, and were later re-engined with CFM56s as C-135FRs. France retired them between October 2020 and December 2023 in favour of the Airbus A330 MRTT.
