The Il-76 is a four-engine, high-wing, T-tailed heavy freighter designed by the Ilyushin bureau to replace the turboprop Antonov An-12 in Soviet Military Transport Aviation. The requirement set in 1967 called for 40 tonnes carried 5,000 km in under six hours, out of unpaved strips; the prototype flew on 25 March 1971 and the type entered service in June 1974. [1]
Some 981 have been built, first at Tashkent and now at Aviastar-SP in Ulyanovsk, in transport, tanker, airborne early warning, command post, firefighting and zero-gravity training forms. It remains in production more than fifty years after its first flight, at seven aircraft a year in 2025. [1] [2]
Soviet Military Transport Aviation in the mid-1960s depended on the An-12, a turboprop with roughly a 20-tonne payload and no ability to move the heavier equipment the Ground Forces were fielding. The 1967 requirement doubled the payload and added a demand that shaped the whole design: the aircraft had to operate from unprepared strips in a country where paved runways were concentrated in a few western districts. Ilyushin's answer was a swept-wing jet freighter sized around the 40-tonne figure, with four Soloviev D-30KP turbofans in underwing pods and a rear ramp wide enough to load vehicles. The prototype flew from Moscow's Central Airfield on 25 March 1971 and the type entered Military Transport Aviation service in June 1974, with the civil Il-76T following for Aeroflot. [1]
Production began at the Tashkent Aviation Production Association in Uzbekistan, which built the great majority of the 981 airframes completed - a figure no other Soviet or Russian transport comes close to. After the Soviet collapse left the plant outside Russia, assembly moved to Aviastar-SP in Ulyanovsk, where the modernised Il-76MD-90A is built today. [1] [2]
The unpaved-strip requirement drove the landing gear: twenty wheels on five units, with low-pressure tyres whose inflation can be adjusted in flight to suit the surface, and main gear that retracts into fuselage fairings rather than the wing. The high wing keeps the engines clear of debris, the rear ramp and door open in flight for airdrops, and thrust reversers bring the landing run down to 450 m. Two overhead travelling cranes and winches in the hold let the crew load without ground equipment, which matters at exactly the airfields the aircraft was designed for. [1]
Military aircraft keep a glazed navigator's station under the flight deck and, on many airframes, a tail turret with two 23 mm cannon directed by its own radar - equipment no Western transport carries. Current-production Il-76MD-90As replace the D-30KP turbofans with PS-90A-76 engines, which burn about 12 percent less fuel, and swap the old panel-built wing for one assembled from long one-piece panels, raising maximum takeoff weight to 210 tonnes and payload to 60 tonnes. The Soviet-Afghan War is where the Il-76 established itself. Between 1979 and 1991 Soviet Il-76s flew 14,700 sorties into Afghanistan, moving 786,200 servicemen and 315,800 tonnes of freight - 89 percent of the personnel and 74 percent of the cargo the Soviet Union airlifted into the country. Crews flew steep tactical approaches into Kabul to stay inside the defended perimeter, and aircraft repeatedly absorbed Stinger and Strela hits and returned. [1]
The war also produced the type's first losses. An Il-76 came down 36 km from Kabul on 25 December 1979, the opening day of the intervention, killing 48. The first loss of any Il-76 had occurred a month earlier near Vitebsk, killing all seven crew. [1]
The break-up of the Soviet Union pushed hundreds of Il-76T and TD freighters onto the open market, where their rough-field capability and low acquisition cost made them the default aircraft for cargo that had to reach places without infrastructure. UN humanitarian flights, Antarctic resupply, oil and mining logistics and, less creditably, arms trafficking into African conflict zones have all run on second-hand Il-76s. Canadian Forces leased civil aircraft for Afghanistan operations in 2006, and China's air force used its Il-76s for evacuations from Afghanistan in 2004 and Libya in 2011. [1]
The airframe's size also made it the standard Soviet and Russian platform for anything that needed a large aircraft as a bus. Beriev converted around 25 into A-50 airborne early warning aircraft, and the A-100 continues that line on the MD-90A airframe; the Il-78 family provides Russia's aerial refuelling; the firefighting version drops 49,000 litres of water in one pass and has deployed as far as Chile; and the Il-76MDK flies parabolic arcs for cosmonaut weightlessness training. The Il-76's accident record is much worse than that of comparable Western freighters, and the reasons are not solely to do with the aircraft. By July 2024 the type had accumulated 137 recorded occurrences, 99 hull losses and 1,158 deaths. Much of that total comes from the environments the aircraft is chosen for - unpaved strips, war zones, weak regulatory oversight and, in several documented cases, deliberate overloading. [1]
The three worst events illustrate the range. On 12 November 1996 a Kazakhstan Airlines Il-76 collided with a Saudi Boeing 747 near Charkhi Dadri in India, killing all 349 people aboard both aircraft in the deadliest mid-air collision on record. On 19 February 2003 an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Il-76 crashed near Kerman, killing 275 - the deadliest accident involving the type. On 11 April 2018 an Algerian Air Force Il-76 came down shortly after takeoff from Boufarik, killing all 257 on board, the worst air disaster on Algerian soil. [1]
Production of the Il-76MD-90A has been climbing slowly rather than dramatically: three aircraft a year in 2019 and 2020, two in 2021, five in 2022, six in 2023 and 2024, and seven in 2025, all from Aviastar-SP. Russia has stated an intention to reach about 12 a year by 2027 and up to 18 thereafter, which is the rate the Ulyanovsk line was designed for, though export demand remains limited and only a small number of export contracts are in place. For the Russian Aerospace Forces there is no alternative in sight. The Il-76 remains the only aircraft in the inventory that can move a company of paratroopers or an armoured vehicle into an austere strip, the A-50 and A-100 radar fleets have nowhere else to live, and the Il-78 is the only tanker Russia operates. Court filings over the 2012 and 2020 supply contracts, in which per-aircraft prices of 3.57 and 3.71 billion rubles were both described as below production cost, suggest the programme has never been comfortably profitable. Unlike most Russian military types the Il-76 is easy to track, because so many fly commercially. Filter for type IL76 and the reliable hits are Volga-Dnepr and Central Asian charter operators moving outsize freight, plus UN humanitarian flights into Africa. Military aircraft in Russian service do not transmit, but Il-76s chartered by Western governments for logistics work generally do.

The first Il-76 hull loss occurred near Vitebsk in the Byelorussian SSR, killing all seven crew.
