The Lockheed U-2 Dragon Lady is a single-engine, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft built for the US Air Force and CIA. Designed by Lockheed's Kelly Johnson and first flown in 1955, it was built to photograph the Soviet Union from an altitude no contemporary fighter or missile could reach.[1]
A Soviet SA-2 missile shot down pilot Francis Gary Powers over the USSR in 1960, and U-2 photography over Cuba in 1962 discovered the missile sites that triggered the Cuban Missile Crisis. More than seventy years after its first flight, the continuously upgraded U-2S still flies for the US Air Force, though the service plans to retire it around fiscal year 2026-2027.[2][3]
By the early 1950s, the United States had almost no reliable way to see what was happening deep inside the Soviet Union - and satellites capable of doing the job were still years away. The CIA wanted an aircraft that could fly reconnaissance missions over Soviet territory without being shot down, and Lockheed's Kelly Johnson, fresh off the P-80 and F-104 programs, proposed a radical answer: strip an aircraft down to almost nothing but wing and fuel tank, hang a single powerful engine underneath, and fly so high that no contemporary fighter or missile could reach it.[1]
The result looked almost nothing like a fighter and flew almost nothing like one either - closer to a jet-powered sailplane, built entirely around altitude performance at the expense of everything else, including basic handling qualities.
The U-2's extreme aspect-ratio wings generate enough lift at altitude to keep the aircraft flying on a whisper of thin air, but that same design makes it notoriously difficult to land - pilots fly it right to the edge of an aerodynamic stall to touch down, and a chase car driven by another U-2 pilot races down the runway alongside, radioing precise height-above-ground calls because the pilot's pressure suit and the aircraft's long nose make judging the flare almost impossible unassisted.[1]
Its 'bicycle' landing gear - two wheels in a line under the fuselage, with small outrigger 'pogo' wheels under each wing that simply drop away after takeoff and are refitted by ground crew before landing - is another direct consequence of prioritizing wing efficiency over conventional gear. Pilots fly missions in a full pressure suit, sealed inside a cockpit at the edge of space for up to twelve hours at a time.[1]
For its first years in service, the U-2 flew genuinely secret, high-stakes missions over denied territory: CIA-operated overflights of the Soviet Union began almost immediately after the type's 1956 entry into service, photographing military installations Western intelligence had no other way to see.[1]
That advantage ended abruptly on 1 May 1960, when a Soviet SA-2 surface-to-air missile shot down Francis Gary Powers deep inside Soviet territory - a shootdown that became a major Cold War incident and ended manned overflights of the USSR.[2] Two years later, U-2 photography over Cuba discovered Soviet medium-range ballistic missiles under construction, triggering the Cuban Missile Crisis; during the standoff, a second U-2 was shot down over Cuba, killing Maj. Rudolf Anderson - the crisis's only American combat fatality.[4]
A substantially redesigned, larger U-2R entered service in 1967, and later variants - the TR-1A and ultimately the modernized U-2S - kept the same basic airframe flying tactical and strategic reconnaissance missions through the Gulf War, the War on Terror, and present-day great-power competition.
The Air Force has moved to retire the U-2 in stages, citing its lack of stealth against modern integrated air defenses and the fleet's advancing age, with divestment actions already underway since early 2024 and full retirement targeted around fiscal year 2026-2027 as satellites and unmanned platforms take over more of its mission.[3]
Until that retirement completes, the U-2 continues flying, including as a testbed for fifth- and sixth-generation sensor and networking technology that will eventually replace it - a fitting final chapter for an aircraft that has spent seven decades being rebuilt rather than retired.[3]
U-2s rarely broadcast civilian ADS-B during operational missions, so they usually don't appear on Flightradar24 - occasional training or ferry flights near Beale AFB (Sacramento area) or RAF Fairford, UK are the best chance of a sighting.

A pilot was killed when his U-2 stalled shortly after takeoff during the programme's earliest operational testing - the first of three fatal accidents in the type's first six months.
