The Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion is a heavy-lift transport helicopter built for the United States Marine Corps, and the largest and heaviest helicopter in American military service. It is the newest member of the CH-53 family that has flown continuously since 1966, with three 7,500 shp General Electric T408 turboshafts, a seven-blade composite main rotor and a cabin a foot wider than its predecessor's. It first flew on 27 October 2015, the first aircraft was delivered to the Marine Corps in May 2018, and it was declared to have reached initial operational capability in April 2022. 25 had been delivered by April 2026 against a programme of record of 200, and Israel has twelve on order. [1] [3]
The Marine Corps had intended to keep most of its CH-53E fleet through an upgrade programme, but that effort stalled as airframes approached their structural life limits around 2011 and 2012. Sikorsky offered a new-build aircraft instead, and in April 2006 the USMC signed an $18.8 billion contract for 156 helicopters, raised to 227 in August 2007 and eventually settled at 200. The CH-53K was to be the heavy-lift leg of a three-part rotary fleet alongside the MV-22 for medium lift and the UH-1Y for light lift. [1]
Design requirements were frozen in 2009 and 2010 and the aircraft passed critical design review in August 2010, but the schedule slipped repeatedly. First flight, originally expected in 2011, did not happen until October 2015, delayed by problems with the titanium quill shafts in the transmission and gearbox. Initial operational capability, once set for 2015, moved to 2018 and then to 2022 after testing exposed engine exhaust gas reingestion, limited rotor gearbox service life, and deficiencies in the tail rotor and driveshaft. By January 2013 the programme was estimated at $23.17 billion for 200 aircraft. [1]
The King Stallion keeps roughly the CH-53E's shipboard footprint - achieved partly with redesigned, shorter composite sponsons that cut overall width - while carrying nearly 30 percent more than the CH-53E's 27,000 lb external payload over the same 110 nautical mile radius, up to a maximum of 35,000 lb. Maximum gross weight rose from 73,500 lb to 88,000 lb. The gains come from three T408 engines rated at 7,500 shp each, a new composite rotor blade system using technology derived from the UH-60 Black Hawk, and an elastomeric rotor hub. [1] [2]
Two changes matter more than the headline lift figures. The first is the cabin: one foot wider and 15 percent larger than the CH-53E's, it takes two 463L master pallets, so cargo arriving by C-17 or C-130 no longer has to be broken down and rebuilt to fit the helicopter. The second is the flight control system, which is fly-by-wire with active inceptors and tactile cueing, allowing automated approach and hover in zero visibility - a meaningful safety change for an aircraft whose job includes landing heavy loads in brownout conditions. The split-torque main gearbox, developed from around 2007, weighs 5,270 lb; the whole gearbox assembly including the rotor hub and rotating controls runs to about 11,650 lb. [1] [4]
The first CH-53K was delivered to the Marine Corps on 16 May 2018, with 18 more already in production. A demonstration in March 2018 saw the aircraft lift 36,000 lb on its single centre cargo hook, the hook's maximum rating. The first simulator, a containerised flight training device, arrived at MCAS New River in May 2020, and Lt Gen Mark Wise declared initial operational capability in April 2022. HMH-461 is the first fully equipped fleet squadron, HMHT-302 the training squadron, VMX-1 at Yuma the operational test squadron and HX-21 at Patuxent River the developmental test unit. [1] [3]
By April 2026 the fleet had passed 10,000 flight hours and 25 aircraft had been delivered, with twelve more on the production line and eight further deliveries expected before the end of that fiscal year. The type has not yet deployed: its first operational deployment is scheduled for fiscal year 2027 with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, and full-rate production of 16 aircraft a year is targeted for fiscal year 2029. The CH-53E is to retire in 2032 and the MH-53E Sea Dragon in 2027. [3]
Israel is the only export customer so far. The Israeli Air Force formalised a requirement in August 2015 to replace its CH-53 Yasur fleet, selected the CH-53K over the Boeing CH-47F in February 2021, and signed for twelve aircraft that December. Eight of them were funded through a US Navy award in August 2023 covering 35 helicopters for $2.77 billion. The Israeli aircraft are named Pereh, will carry Israeli-integrated combat systems approved for early installation, and are to equip a reactivated 114 Squadron. [1] [5]
The programme's most instructive result was a loss. Sikorsky teamed with Rheinmetall in February 2018 for Germany's Schwerer Transporthubschrauber requirement, worth around four billion euros for some 40 aircraft. Germany cancelled the competition in September 2020 on cost grounds and chose the CH-47F outright in 2022, citing the Chinook's lower unit price - which allowed more airframes for the same budget - and interoperability with the Netherlands and other European operators. Belgium opened talks with NAVAIR and Sikorsky in February 2026 over roughly 11 heavy transport helicopters under a 1.3 billion euro programme aimed at service entry between 2028 and 2030, and Japan and India have been reported as possible customers. The King Stallion's remaining problem is not capability but numbers and cost. Deliveries are running at a rate that will take well into the 2030s to reach 200 aircraft, the programme was assessed at $31 billion by the end of 2018 after its restructuring, and the September 2025 multi-year contract for up to 99 aircraft is valued at about $10.9 billion. Germany's decision to buy Chinooks instead turned specifically on the CH-53K being expensive per airframe, and that arithmetic has not changed. [1] [6]
Against that, the aircraft does something nothing else in the American inventory can. It is the only U.S. helicopter that can move a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle or 36,000 lb of cargo by air, and it does so from ships. Programme officials reported in 2026 that they were satisfied with fleet performance and were open to a future mine-countermeasures variant to fill the gap the MH-53E leaves in 2027. The first Marine Expeditionary Unit deployment in fiscal 2027 will be the first real test of whether that capability holds up away from home stations. [3]
The CH-53K shares the H53S type designator with the CH-53E, MH-53E and the civil S-80, so a type search returns the whole family rather than the K specifically. Most sightings are training sorties around MCAS New River in North Carolina, where HMH-461 and the training squadron HMHT-302 are based, plus test flying from NAS Patuxent River in Maryland and MCAS Yuma in Arizona. Operational sorties usually fly without a transponder code the site resolves.

The first prototype, Engineering Development Model-1, flew for 30 minutes from Sikorsky's Development Flight Center at West Palm Beach, Florida - four years later than originally planned, after problems with the titanium quill shafts in the transmission and gearbox.
A CH-53K lifted 36,000 lb on its single centre-point cargo hook, the maximum the hook is rated to carry and a demonstration of the payload margin over the CH-53E it replaces.
Testing found the engines reingesting their own exhaust gas, limited service life in the rotor gearboxes, late deliveries of redesigned parts, and deficiencies in the tail rotor and driveshaft. The aircraft missed its late-2019 combat readiness date and the programme, then assessed at $31 billion, was restructured.
Lt Gen Mark R. Wise, Deputy Commandant for Aviation, declared initial operational capability for the CH-53K, almost four years after the first aircraft was delivered to the Marine Corps and seven years later than originally planned.
By late April 2026 the CH-53K fleet had flown more than 10,000 hours with 25 aircraft delivered and twelve more on the production line, ahead of a first Marine Expeditionary Unit deployment scheduled for fiscal year 2027.
