The AgustaWestland AW101 is a three-engine medium-lift helicopter used for anti-submarine warfare, troop transport, search and rescue and utility work. It was developed jointly by Westland Helicopters in the United Kingdom and Agusta in Italy to meet parallel national requirements to replace the Sea King, first flew on 9 October 1987 and entered service in 1999. [1] [2]

Britain, Denmark and Portugal call their aircraft Merlin; Canada operates it as the CH-149 Cormorant, Japan as the MCH-101 and Norway as the SAR Queen. It is built at Yeovil in England and Vergiate in Italy, with licensed assembly having taken place in Japan and the United States, and Leonardo put the in-service fleet at close to 200 aircraft across more than ten countries in 2021. Origins & the Canadian Cancellation

The UK Ministry of Defence issued a requirement in 1977 for an anti-submarine helicopter to replace the Royal Navy's Sea Kings, which were losing ground to Soviet submarine development. Westland proposed the WG.34, a three-engine aircraft of roughly Sea King size with more autonomy and greater range. The Italian Navy was facing the same problem with its own Agusta-built Sea Kings, and the two firms formed EH Industries Limited to develop and market a joint successor. The British government committed in June 1981 with an initial 20 million pounds for nine pre-series aircraft, and a 1984 Anglo-Italian agreement funded most of the development programme. [1]

Canada selected the EH101 in 1987 to replace its Sea Kings, valuing the third engine, the range and the de-icing capability for North Atlantic work, with up to 50 aircraft on order. The purchase then became a political target: critics called it excessive once the Cold War ended, and the EH101 was a live issue in the 1993 federal election. The incoming Liberal government cancelled it, at a cost of $470 million in cancellation fees. Canada bought 15 of the same helicopter for search and rescue four years later. [1]

Design & Engineering

The AW101's layout is conventional; what is unusual is how much of the airframe is built to absorb punishment. The fuselage is modular and made from aluminium-lithium alloy chosen to be light and damage-resistant, the crew seats are armoured and rated to survive an impact above 10 m/s, and the aircraft is cleared to operate between -45C and +50C with a full de-icing system. An active control of structural response system cuts airframe vibration by as much as 80 percent, which matters less for comfort than for fatigue life on an aircraft expected to fly maritime patrols for decades. The control system will hold a stable hover in a 40 kn crosswind. [1]

Three engines drive a five-blade main rotor 61 ft across. The blades are carbon and glass over Nomex honeycomb and Rohacell foam with titanium leading edges, and their planform derives from the BERP tips first flown on the Westland Lynx, improving efficiency at the tip and reducing noise. Each engine has its own 1,074-litre tank with dual booster pumps, and optional fourth and fifth tanks top the main tanks up in flight, taking maximum endurance to 7 hours 40 minutes against 5 hours on the Merlin HM1. The Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 was developed specifically for this aircraft and went on to power the British Apache and the NH90; about 80 percent of AW101s use it, though by 2020 new aircraft were being sold only with the General Electric CT7-8E. Royal Navy Service

The Royal Navy took 44 Merlin HM1s, the first delivered on 17 May 1997 and the type entering service on 2 June 2000, flying from Culdrose with 814, 820 and 824 Naval Air Squadrons. In March 2004 the fleet was briefly grounded after a tail rotor failed at Culdrose because of a manufacturing defect; the redesigned tail rotor that followed was adopted on most AW101s and cut the associated maintenance burden significantly. Thirty were rebuilt to HM2 standard under the 750 million pound Merlin Capability Sustainment Programme, finished on 11 July 2016, which brought a new mission system, digital cockpit, electro-optical camera and multi-static sonar processing, and a radar able to track forty times as many targets. Eight airframes were left unconverted for cost reasons. [1]

The HM2 also carries Crowsnest, the airborne early warning role inherited from the Sea King ASaC7, in a Thales-supplied pod selected in May 2015. It arrived late: the system deployed with the 2021 carrier strike group but only reached initial operating capability in July 2023, and full capability in time for the 2025 Indo-Pacific deployment, on which 820 NAS embarked nine Merlins aboard HMS Prince of Wales - six in the anti-submarine role and three carrying Crowsnest. The arithmetic behind that is tight. With 30 HM2s in service and five in maintenance at any time, the notional fourteen aircraft for a single operational carrier has never been realistic, and the Royal Navy has been examining replacements for the Merlin and Crowsnest combination against a planned 2029 retirement of the radar. The RAF Transports and Commando Merlin

The RAF ordered 22 Merlin HC3s for transport, the first entering service in January 2001 with No. 28 Squadron at Benson, fitted with extended-range tanks and an air-to-air refuelling probe. They first deployed to the Balkans in 2003 and to Iraq under Operation Telic from 2004, where they became the main medical evacuation asset in the south and flew around Basra until the British withdrawal in June 2009. Six ex-Danish aircraft were bought in 2007 as HC3As, freeing Merlins for Afghanistan; the Afghan deployment drew criticism because the aircraft initially lacked ballistic armour, which was fitted fleet-wide by July 2010. From 2012 the whole HC3 and HC3A fleet was transferred to the Royal Navy to replace the Commando Helicopter Force's Sea King HC4s. Command passed formally at Benson on 30 September 2014, when the RAF's 78 Squadron disbanded and 846 Naval Air Squadron stood up on the type, followed by 845 NAS in July 2015. Twenty-five airframes were then rebuilt under the 454 million pound Merlin Life Sustainment Programme with HM2 cockpit electronics, folding tail and main rotor head, strengthened landing gear, deck lashing points, fast-roping points and a common emergency egress system. The first Commando Merlin Mk4s were delivered to Yeovilton on 25 May 2018 and the conversion finished by the end of 2022, with an out-of-service date now set at 2040. [1]

Export Operators & Scandals

Italy has been the other core customer, taking 22 Navy aircraft in anti-submarine, airborne early warning and amphibious support configurations and 15 HH-101A Caesar combat search and rescue aircraft for the Air Force between 2016 and 2020. Denmark took 14, Portugal 12 across three sub-variants, Japan 14 assembled by Kawasaki for airborne mine countermeasures and Antarctic support, Norway 16 SAR Queens that replaced the Sea King in the rescue role by December 2023, and Poland four for the Navy with a further 22 under negotiation since 2023. Canada returned as a customer and signed a C$1.24 billion contract in December 2022 for three more Cormorants and a fleet modernisation. [1] [4]

The VVIP business has been less happy. The United States Marine Corps selected a customised AW101 as the VH-71 Kestrel presidential helicopter, built nine airframes, then cancelled the programme in June 2009 over cost overruns; the aircraft were sold to Canada for $164 million as Cormorant spares. India ordered 12 VVIP aircraft in April 2009 and cancelled after three deliveries when Finmeccanica was accused of bribery to win the contract. Indonesia's air force then bought one of the rejected Indian airframes in 2017 against a presidential decree cancelling the purchase; three officers were named as corruption suspects, the middleman was jailed for ten years in 2023, and the helicopter sat in a hangar as court evidence until entering service in 2024. Safety Record & Current Status

The type's record is good for its size and role, but the last two years have been bad ones for British Merlins. On 4 September 2024 a Merlin HC4 of 846 NAS, ZJ135, ditched in the English Channel off Dorset during night flying from HMS Queen Elizabeth, killing Lieutenant Rhodri Leyshon. The inquiry traced it to a split rubber diaphragm in the number two engine's high-pressure fuel pump, weakened by a maintenance procedure Safran introduced in 2020, and found the crew had misread the resulting warning as a double engine failure and shut down two serviceable engines. On 3 June 2026 another 846 NAS Merlin HC4, ZJ131, crashed near Sourton in Devon during a training exercise, killing Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher and Petty Officer Owen Green. Production continues at Yeovil and Vergiate, with Norway reported in 2025 to be considering an anti-submarine order on top of its rescue fleet and Leonardo having proposed a mixed anti-submarine and coastguard fleet of around 31 aircraft to Turkey in 2023, though no Turkish contract has been signed. The design is nearly forty years old and the newest customers are buying it for the same reasons Canada did in 1987 - three engines, long range and the ability to work in bad North Atlantic weather - which is a reasonable summary of why the aircraft has outlasted most of its contemporaries.     The second pre-production aircraft, MMX600, was on an acoustic measurement flight near Cameri airfield in Italy when residual hydraulic pressure left the rotor brake partly engaged. The friction generated enough heat to damage flight control components and start a fire; the helicopter rolled and crashed on its side. All four on board were killed and flight testing was suspended for six months.

    The British naval prototype ZF644 suffered a sub-standard component failure in the tail rotor pitch control system at around 12,000 ft near Yarcombe. Three of the four crew parachuted at about 10,000 ft; the pilot stayed with the aircraft until 1,200 ft to steer it clear of the ground before jumping. The helicopter was destroyed in a field beside the A303.

    A Canadian Forces Cormorant went into Chedabucto Bay off Canso during a night search and rescue exercise after the crew manually overrode the autopilot. Three of the seven on board died, all by drowning rather than impact injuries, with secondary escape exits obstructed by cabin equipment. The board of inquiry cited pilot error, insufficient flying hours and poor cockpit monitoring.

Italian Navy (Models 110, 112, 410, 413)Italy ordered 16 in 1997 and eventually took 22: eight anti-submarine and anti-surface aircraft with Eliradar APS-784 radar and HELRAS dipping sonar, four airborne early warning aircraft carrying the HEW-784 radar in a large underfuselage radome, and ten amphibious support and special forces transports with folding rotors and tail boom. The last was accepted on 4 August 2009.
HH-101A Caesar (Model 611)The Italian Air Force combat search and rescue variant, selected in June 2011 to replace the Sea King HH-3F and powered by CT7-8E engines. Fifteen were ordered and delivered between 2016 and 2020, fitted for aerial refuelling, cabin machine guns and a full defensive aids suite for personnel recovery in contested airspace.
CH-149 Cormorant (Models 511, 615)The Canadian search and rescue variant, which won the 1997 Canadian Search and Rescue Helicopter competition after the earlier 50-aircraft CH-148 Petrel and CH-149 Chimo orders had been cancelled in 1993. Fifteen were delivered. In December 2022 Canada signed a C$1.24 billion contract to buy three more and modernise the existing fleet to Model 615 configuration, taking it to 16 aircraft plus a new simulator.
Nordic and Iberian SAR (Models 512, 514-516, 612)Denmark bought eight search and rescue and six tactical transport aircraft as the Merlin Joint Supporter; the six transports went to the UK in 2007 and were replaced by new-build machines. Portugal took 12 in three sub-variants for search and rescue, fisheries protection and combat search and rescue, operated by 751 Squadron on constant alert at Montijo, Lajes and Porto Santo. Norway ordered 16 Model 612s in December 2013, named SAR Queen, which took over the rescue role on 1 September 2020 and fully replaced the Sea King in December 2023.
MCH-101 / CH-101 (Model 518)The Japanese variant, assembled by Kawasaki Heavy Industries from 2003 under a 14-aircraft order placed by the Japan Defense Agency. The MCH-101 handles airborne mine countermeasures for the Maritime Self-Defense Force with the AQS-24A mine-hunting system, AN/AES-1 laser mine detection and Mk-104 acoustic sweep gear, replacing the MH-53E; the CH-101 supports Antarctic expeditions. Automated rotor and tail folding is a Japanese-specific feature.
VH-71 Kestrel (Model 519)The cancelled United States Marine Corps presidential transport, selected under the VXX programme and heavily customised with self-defence systems. Four test vehicles and five pilot production aircraft were built before cost overruns and political opposition killed the programme in June 2009. The completed airframes were sold to Canada for $164 million as a spares source for the CH-149 Cormorant fleet.
VVIP variants (Models 640-643)The head-of-state configuration, which accounted for around 15 percent of all AW101 sales by 2009. Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Turkmenistan each took two, and Nigeria and Azerbaijan received aircraft originally built as Model 641s for India. Poland's Model 614, four convertible anti-submarine and combat search and rescue aircraft for the Polish Navy, and Algeria's six Model 610 naval aircraft round out the export line.
