The Chengdu J-20 'Mighty Dragon' is a Chinese twin-engine, canard-delta stealth fighter developed by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation for the People's Liberation Army Air Force. It first flew in 2011 and is designed for long-range strikes against tankers, airborne early warning aircraft and other high-value targets rather than close-range dogfighting.[1]
It now equips units across every PLA theatre command; mid-2026 estimates put the fleet at 300 to 500 airframes, with production running at roughly 100 a year - a scaling rate faster than either the F-22 or F-35 achieved.[2][3] A twin-seat variant, believed to command drone formations, has since entered service.
China's fifth-generation program emerged from 1990s studies into the J-XX requirement, with Chengdu's canard design beating Shenyang's more conventional proposal. The J-20's timing was theatrical: its first flight on 11 January 2011 occurred hours before a visiting U.S. Defense Secretary met Hu Jintao - read universally as a message, and a program milestone Western analysts had placed years further out.[1]
The design brief showed in the shape from day one: a large aircraft with generous fuel fraction and big internal bays, optimised for speed, range and forward-hemisphere stealth rather than knife-fight agility - a fighter for the Pacific's distances, aimed at the enablers (tankers, AWACS, bases) that hold American airpower together.[1]
The J-20 is aerodynamically unlike its Western peers: close-coupled canards ahead of a cropped delta, long chined forebody, ventral strakes and diverterless supersonic inlets - choices that trade some all-aspect signature for lift, supersonic cruise efficiency and control at a 25-tonne scale. Its main bays carry four (later six) PL-15 long-range missiles, with side bays for short-range PL-10s on distinctive swing-out rails that let the doors close behind them.[1]
Its engines chart China's whole propulsion journey: Russian AL-31s in early jets, interim WS-10Cs with serrated nozzles from 2021, and finally the purpose-built WS-15 - flown from 2023 and fielded on the upgraded J-20A - promising the sustained supercruise and thrust the design always intended. Sensor-wise the type mirrors the F-35's philosophy: big-array AESA, distributed EO apertures around the airframe, and heavy sensor fusion.[1]
The J-20 entered PLAAF service in 2017 and spread with un-Western speed: by September 2025 the fleet officially passed 300 aircraft across thirteen-plus brigades in all five theater commands, with June 2026 open-source counts arguing for numbers approaching 500 and annual production near 100-120[4]. Projections of a four-figure fleet by the 2030s are no longer treated as fanciful.[2][3]
Its operational pattern is maritime and assertive: East China Sea patrols (with claimed radar-lock encounters against foreign fighters), escort packages around Taiwan, and intercepts over the Western Pacific. U.S. Pacific commanders have described professional, capable J-20 conduct - and treat the type as the pacing threat their own fifth-generation posture answers.[1]
The twin-seat J-20S - the world's first two-seat stealth fighter - confirms where the fleet is headed: the back-seater as battle manager for loyal-wingman drones, with the J-20 family cast as the quarterback of a manned-unmanned team rather than a lone-wolf dogfighter.[5]
The type's evolution has been continuous: LRIP jets with Russian engines, the WS-10C generation, the J-20A with WS-15s and airframe refinements, and the J-20S twin-seater - plus persistent reporting of a carrier-influenced technology exchange with Shenyang's J-35 program, which now gives China a two-type stealth fighter high-low mix no other nation outside the U.S. possesses.[5]
Above it, the next generation is already flying: Chengdu's tailless J-36 - escorted on its December 2024 first flight by a J-20S chase plane - and Shenyang's J-50 signal that the J-20 is becoming the established mainstay of a family, not the frontier. Chinese airpower's frontier now moves on a five-year cadence.[5]
Whatever its exact signature or kinematics - still debated in open sources - the J-20's strategic effect is settled: it ended the American monopoly on operational stealth fighter fleets, forced a redesign of Pacific air planning around survivable tankers and dispersed bases, and demonstrated an industrial tempo that has become the yardstick anxiety of Western procurement debates.[3]
Fifteen years separated the J-20's first flight from a fleet of several hundred aircraft with successor types already flying - a development pace Western analysts compare to the United States' own aerospace expansion in the 1950s.[5]
The J-20 is essentially never visible on Flightradar24 or other ADS-B based public trackers - it operates exclusively within PLAAF military airspace and does not broadcast civil ADS-B, so sightings depend on ground spotters, satellite imagery and official PLA media releases rather than flight-tracking sites.

Ground sensors flagged a fault during a high-speed runway run that the cockpit instruments did not show, and the test was aborted about three minutes in. AVIC later said that a delay of two or three more minutes could have caused a major accident. No aircraft has ever been publicly confirmed lost, though China does not routinely disclose losses.
Monitoring software picked up a fault during a J-20 test flight; ground control and engineers talked the pilot through it and the aircraft returned safely. AVIC disclosed the episode publicly only years later.
