The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is a single-seat, twin-engine stealth fighter built for the US Air Force. It was the first operational fifth-generation fighter, combining low-observable stealth shaping, thrust-vectoring engines and sensor fusion to supercruise past Mach 1.5 without afterburner.[1] Congress banned its export and cut the planned buy from roughly 750 airframes to 195, so it has flown for only one air force in its history.[2]
The F-22 traces to the USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter programme of the 1980s; the YF-22 prototype beat the Northrop YF-23 in a 1991 fly-off, and the production aircraft entered service in December 2005.[3] It flew its first combat mission over Syria in September 2014 and recorded its first air-to-air kill in February 2023, downing a Chinese surveillance balloon off South Carolina.[4][5]
The F-22 traces back to the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program, the Air Force's response to Soviet fighters such as the Su-27 and MiG-29 closing the technology gap with US fourth-generation jets, and new Soviet surface-to-air missile networks that threatened to make conventional strike-fighter tactics obsolete.[3] By 1986 the field had narrowed to two finalist teams for a demonstration/validation fly-off: Lockheed, teamed with Boeing and General Dynamics, building the YF-22; and Northrop, teamed with McDonnell Douglas - fresh off the classified B-2 Spirit program - building the YF-23.[6]
The YF-23 was, by most technical accounts, the stealthier and faster of the two designs, with a lower radar cross-section and a higher top speed. But when the YF-22 flew on 29 September 1990, a month after the YF-23's first flight, it demonstrated something the Northrop jet couldn't: two-dimensional thrust-vectoring nozzles that let it point its nose well beyond what its wings alone would allow, plus a flight-test program many considered lower-risk heading into full development.[7] On 23 April 1991, the Air Force picked the YF-22. Publicly cited reasons included the type's demonstrated agility and the EMD proposal's lower perceived program risk; some analysts have also pointed to industrial-base politics - handing Northrop both the B-2 and the ATF would have concentrated the country's stealth expertise in a single contractor.[8]
The loss ended Northrop's run as a prime fighter manufacturer. The two surviving YF-23 prototypes still exist today - one preserved at the National Museum of the USAF, the other displayed outdoors, engines removed, at the Western Museum of Flight in California.[6]
Full-scale development began after the 1991 win. The Air Force and its contractors restructured the programme repeatedly through the 1990s - in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997 - as GAO reviews flagged billions of dollars in cost growth; one 1997 GAO report assessed the fallout from a newly acknowledged $15 billion increase in projected costs.[9] The first production-representative F-22 didn't fly until 7 September 1997, and the type didn't reach Initial Operational Capability until 15 December 2005 - roughly nineteen years after the ATF competition began.[8]
By the time the F-22 reached service, the strategic case for it had weakened. The Soviet Union that had justified the programme had collapsed over a decade earlier, the wars the US was fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan were counterinsurgencies with no use for an air-superiority fighter, and each Raptor's price kept climbing even as the planned buy shrank from around 750 to a few hundred. In April 2009, Defense Secretary Robert Gates moved to cap production at 187 aircraft, arguing bluntly that the F-22 had never been used in either ongoing war and that money was better spent on the more exportable, multirole F-35.[10] After a contentious congressional fight that summer - including a threatened presidential veto of any funding bill that added more Raptors - the House voted to end production, and the line closed for good in December 2011 after 195 airframes: eight test jets and 187 combat-coded F-22As.[11][12]
Export never happened either. The 1998 Obey Amendment, inserted into defense appropriations by Rep. David Obey, barred any federal dollars from being used to license F-22 sales abroad - not to Japan, not to Israel, not to Australia, all of whom asked. It has been renewed in every defense bill since, meaning the world's most capable air-superiority fighter has flown for exactly one air force in its entire career.[2]
The Raptor's stealth is baked into its shape rather than bolted on: continuously curved fuselage contours, aligned edges on the wings and tail, serrated panel gaps, and internal weapons bays that keep munitions from ruining an otherwise near-invisible radar return. Two Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 afterburning turbofans, each generating roughly 35,000 lbf, let it supercruise - sustain supersonic flight above Mach 1.5 without lighting the afterburner - a trick that saves fuel, reduces its infrared signature, and lets it loiter at high speed over a fight far longer than a conventional fighter could.[8]
Those same engines carry two-dimensional thrust-vectoring nozzles that can angle exhaust up or down, letting the Raptor point its nose dramatically off its actual flight path - the maneuver airshow crowds know as the 'Raptor salute'. It's a genuine tactical advantage at low speed and high angle of attack, not just a display trick, and it was one of the very capabilities that beat the YF-23 in 1991.[8]
Where the F-22 really separates itself from fourth-generation jets, though, is what the pilot doesn't have to do. Its AN/APG-77 active electronically scanned array radar, communications systems, and electronic-warfare sensors all feed into a single fused tactical picture rather than a cockpit full of separate displays the pilot has to mentally stitch together - letting one person do what used to take a two-seat crew.[13] Armament is built around a single internal M61A2 20mm cannon plus a main weapons bay that carries up to six AIM-120 AMRAAMs, or a mixed load of AMRAAMs and 1,000 lb GBU-32 JDAMs for strike missions, with two more AIM-9 Sidewinders tucked into side bays.[8]
For its first nine years in service, the F-22 fought in exercises, not wars - and it fought lopsidedly. During Northern Edge 2006 over Alaska, Raptors from the 27th Fighter Squadron reportedly ran up a 108-to-0 simulated kill ratio against adversary F-15s, F-16s and F/A-18s while posting a 97% mission-capable rate; the following year's Northern Edge exercise produced reports of a 144-to-0 tally in its opening week.[8][14] Adversary pilots who flew against it in these exercises describe an aircraft they typically never saw before it had already 'killed' them.
The F-22 didn't fly its first combat mission until 22 September 2014, more than twenty years after the ATF fly-off - striking ISIS command-and-control facilities near the Tishrin Dam in Syria with GPS-guided JDAMs on the opening night of Operation Inherent Resolve. Over the following ten months, Raptors flew roughly 204 combat sorties and dropped about 270 bombs at some 60 locations, working in a role nobody had originally designed the jet for: escorting and clearing the way for strike packages flying into contested, radar-defended Syrian airspace. Then-ACC commander Gen. Herbert 'Hawk' Carlisle said publicly he would not send a strike package into that airspace without a Raptor escort.[4]
It's the F-22's stealth in the more mundane, day-to-day sense - intercepting other countries' aircraft without them ever knowing it was there - that produced its best-known anecdote. In 2013, an F-22 shadowed two Iranian F-4 Phantoms closing on a US drone, sliding in undetected beneath them to check their weapons load before pulling alongside and radioing a warning. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh made the exchange public later that year.
On 4 February 2023, an F-22 shot down a Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon off Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with a single AIM-9X Sidewinder fired from about 58,000 feet - the type's first confirmed air-to-air kill in nearly two decades of service.[5][15]
The F-22's production line closed in 2011, so the fleet cannot be replaced if aircraft are lost. When Hurricane Michael tore through Tyndall AFB in October 2018, 17 non-flyable Raptors rode out a Category 5 storm inside hangars that partially collapsed around them - roughly a tenth of the entire fleet exposed at once. Nearly all were eventually repaired.[16]
China's J-20 fleet has grown past 300 airframes, and the Air Force's own sixth-generation fighter, the NGAD-derived F-47, remains years from squadron service.[17] Congress has repeatedly blocked Air Force plans to retire older Block 20 Raptors, mandating the fleet stay in service at least through 2032, while Lockheed Martin fields a roughly $270 million podded infrared search-and-track upgrade and other sensor packages intended to keep the jet relevant into the 2040s.[18]
The F-22 remains the Air Force's primary air-superiority fighter, flying escort for F-35s and B-21s while NGAD/F-47 development continues.
F-22s rarely broadcast ADS-B during operational sorties, so consistent Flightradar24 tracking is uncommon. Training flights near home bases such as JB Elmendorf-Richardson (Alaska), Langley AFB (Virginia) and Tyndall AFB (Florida) occasionally appear using the type filter "F22" or tactical callsigns issued for the mission (e.g. call signs beginning with squadron-specific words).

A YF-22 prototype crashed on landing approach at Edwards Air Force Base after a pilot-induced oscillation triggered by the flight control system. Test pilot Tom Morgenfeld ejected safely.
An F-22A crashed and skidded off the runway during takeoff at Nellis Air Force Base after a navigation data error. The pilot ejected safely and flight testing was briefly suspended.
Lockheed Martin test pilot David Cooley's F-22A came apart at Harper Dry Lake, 35 miles from Edwards Air Force Base. Investigators found he was almost certainly incapacitated by g-forces during a high-load test manoeuvre and ejected too late to survive.
An F-22A crashed near Cold Bay, Alaska after its engine bleed-air system malfunctioned and cut off the pilot's oxygen supply. Pilot Capt. Jeffrey Haney was killed, and the accident led to a fleet-wide grounding and an oxygen-system redesign.
An F-22A crashed and caught fire near Tyndall Air Force Base's drone runway while returning to base. The pilot ejected safely.
A Category 5 hurricane tore through Tyndall Air Force Base with seventeen non-flyable Raptors still in its hangars. All were eventually repaired and returned to service, but nearly losing a tenth of the fleet underlined how irreplaceable each jet had become once the production line closed.

The F-22 remains fully in frontline USAF service and none of the 187 production F-22As have been formally retired to museum display - the fleet Congress has mandated stay flying through at least 2032. The only Raptor-family aircraft on public display today are ATF-competition prototypes and pre-production test articles, not operational jets.
