The Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II is the conventional take-off and landing variant of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter family, developed for the US Air Force and export customers. It is the lightest and least expensive of the three F-35 variants and the only one with an internal cannon.[1]
More than 1,300 F-35As fly with the US Air Force and over a dozen allied nations. In 2023 it became the first fifth-generation fighter certified to carry a US nuclear weapon, and in 2025 the United Kingdom - previously a STOVL-only F-35B customer - ordered the A-model for the first time.[2][3]
The F-35 traces its lineage to a Pentagon accounting problem. A 1993 'Bottom-Up Review' of post-Cold War force structure killed the Air Force's Multi-Role Fighter and the Navy/Marine Corps' Advanced Attack/Fighter programs outright, folding their requirements into a new Joint Advanced Strike Technology effort. JAST's program office stood up on 27 January 1994 with an unusually blunt mandate: find one airframe family that could replace the F-16, A-10, F/A-18 and AV-8B Harrier all at once.[4]
JAST absorbed a parallel short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing effort - the Common Affordable Lightweight Fighter, itself a descendant of a DARPA supersonic-STOVL study - in 1994, and the merged program formally became the Joint Strike Fighter during its engineering and manufacturing phase. In November 1996 the Pentagon down-selected to two contractors to build flying demonstrators: Lockheed Martin's X-35 and Boeing's X-32.[4]
The X-35A first flew from Palmdale, California on 24 October 2000, and over the following year Lockheed's team - working with Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems - proved the same basic airframe could do conventional takeoffs, carrier landings and vertical STOVL flight with a shaft-driven lift fan. On 26 October 2001 the Pentagon picked Lockheed Martin's design over Boeing's, in what was then the richest contract in military history.[5]
The first F-35A, tail number AA-1, flew on 15 December 2006 from Lockheed's Fort Worth plant, and the Air Force declared Initial Operational Capability with the 34th Fighter Squadron at Hill AFB, Utah on 2 August 2016 - nearly a decade later, after a development program that repeatedly blew through its own cost and schedule baselines.[6][7]
Sustainment, not development, has proven the program's more durable headache. The Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS), meant to automate maintenance scheduling and parts tracking fleet-wide, became notorious for feeding crews inaccurate data that maintainers ended up re-tracking by hand in spreadsheets - so much so that the Pentagon began replacing it in 2021 with a leaner, faster Operational Data Integrated Network (ODIN), completing the first hardware rollout across squadrons in January 2022.[8][9]
The current modernization wave, Block 4, rides on a hardware and software package called Technology Refresh 3 (TR-3) - new mission computers, a much bigger cockpit display processor, and expanded memory needed to support new weapons and sensor upgrades. TR-3's own certification problems froze deliveries for roughly a year before the first upgraded jets, still in a stripped-down 'training-only' configuration, began shipping in July 2024.[10] GAO's recurring 'F-35 Sustainment' reports have chronicled the fallout in blunt terms: total life-cycle costs, once projected at $1.1 trillion in 2018, had grown to $1.58 trillion by 2023 - pushing the program's combined acquisition-plus-sustainment bill past $2 trillion even as the Pentagon plans to fly the jets less to save money.[11]
Of the three Lightning II variants, the F-35A is the one built with the fewest compromises for anything other than flying and fighting. It skips the F-35B's shaft-driven lift fan and roll posts and the F-35C's reinforced carrier landing gear, oversized folding wings and tailhook, which lets it carry the family's largest internal fuel fraction relative to its size, keep its empty weight the lowest of the three, and hold the lowest flyaway unit cost by a wide margin.[12]
It is also the only F-35 variant built around an internal gun: a four-barrel GAU-22/A 25mm rotary cannon buried in the left wing root, firing through a door that opens only when the trigger is pulled to preserve the jet's stealth shaping. The B and C models instead carry an external, removable gun pod slung under the fuselage - a concession to internal volume that both give up in exchange for their STOVL and carrier hardware.[13] The A-model is stressed to a full 9g, the highest structural limit in the family, reflecting its role as the closest thing to a straight air-superiority replacement for the F-16.[14]
Underneath the shared stealth shaping, all three variants lean on the same sensor architecture: a Northrop Grumman AN/APG-81 AESA radar with more than 1,600 transmit-receive modules, a chin-mounted Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) for infrared search-and-track and laser designation, and the AN/AAQ-37 Distributed Aperture System - six infrared cameras giving the pilot an unbroken 360-degree view through the airframe itself. The mission computer fuses all of it, plus off-board data, into a single tactical picture rather than a cockpit full of separate displays - the capability pilots and officials routinely describe as a 'god's-eye view' of the fight.[15]
That gun wasn't trouble-free in service. Pentagon testers flagged 'unacceptable' accuracy in the F-35A's cannon as late as 2019, tracing the fault to misaligned gun mounts and cracked skin panels near the muzzle after live firing; software and hardware fixes through the early 2020s eventually brought it up to what the Joint Program Office called an 'effective' standard by 2024.[16]
The F-35's combat debut belonged to Israel, not the United States. On 22 May 2018, Israeli Air Force chief Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin told an international gathering of air force commanders in Herzliya that his F-35I Adirs - a heavily Israeli-modified F-35A variant with locally integrated electronic warfare and weapons - had already flown live strikes in the region, the first F-35 combat missions anywhere in the world.[17]
The Adir remains the most combat-tested F-35 in the world. Israel has since publicly acknowledged additional operational use of the type, including strikes tied to its long-running campaign against Iranian-linked targets and, in June 2025, a large air campaign against Iran's nuclear and military infrastructure that involved F-35Is alongside other IAF strike aircraft.[18] Beyond Israel, F-35As now fly with the US Air Force and more than a dozen partner nations - Norway, the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Poland, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Finland and others - forming the backbone of NATO and allied fifth-generation airpower even where combat use has not been publicly reported.
US Air Force F-35As have suffered mishaps rather than combat losses. On 19 May 2020, a 58th Fighter Squadron jet at Eglin AFB, Florida crashed on landing after the pilot - fatigued and distracted by a misaligned helmet display - came in roughly 50 knots too fast, compounded by a previously unknown flight-control logic fault; the pilot ejected safely and the $176 million aircraft was destroyed.[19] Almost five years later, on 28 January 2025, an F-35A at Eielson AFB, Alaska suffered landing-gear icing after water-contaminated hydraulic fluid froze in flight; after a 50-minute airborne consultation with Lockheed engineers failed to resolve it, the pilot ejected in a widely shared video, and the jet - valued at roughly $200 million - was destroyed.[20]
The F-35A is, by numbers alone, the most successful fifth-generation fighter program in history: more than 1,300 delivered, over 20 nations committed as customers, and the wider F-35 fleet passing its 1,000th airframe milestone in 2025 even as GAO continued flagging cost and schedule problems in back-to-back annual reports. On 12 October 2023 it became the first fifth-generation fighter certified to carry the B61-12 nuclear gravity bomb - a certification unique to the A-model, since neither the F-35B nor F-35C is cleared for the nuclear mission.[2]
That distinction directly shaped one of 2025's most notable F-35 orders. Ahead of the NATO summit in the Hague, the United Kingdom - previously an F-35B-only customer flying the type from its carriers - announced it would buy at least 12 F-35As for RAF Marham, rejoining NATO's nuclear-sharing mission for the first time since it retired its own air-launched nuclear weapons at the end of the Cold War. Buying the A-model rather than more B-model jets was also, officials noted, the cheaper option: up to 25% less per aircraft.[3]
With Block 4 modernization and Technology Refresh 3 still working through certification, and Lockheed ramping deliveries toward 170-190 jets a year, the F-35A remains the most widely ordered version of the Joint Strike Fighter among Western air forces.

An F-35A caught fire on the runway at Eglin Air Force Base during its takeoff roll after a fan blade in the engine failed. The pilot escaped safely but the aircraft was written off, triggering a brief fleet-wide grounding.
An F-35A was badly damaged by fire on the flightline at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho. The pilot was unhurt and the airframe was later reduced to an instructional trainer rather than repaired.
A Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-35A crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Aomori Prefecture during a night training mission, killing the pilot. Investigators attributed the crash to spatial disorientation, and it was the first fatal crash of any F-35 variant.
