The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit is a long-range, flying-wing stealth bomber built for the US Air Force. It first flew in 1989 and entered service in 1997; only 21 were built, making it, with development costs included, the most expensive aircraft ever produced at roughly $2.1 billion per airframe.[1]

Developed from Jack Northrop's flying-wing designs of the 1940s, the B-2 uses continuously curved surfaces to scatter radar returns and can carry up to 40,000 lb of conventional or nuclear weapons internally. It flew its combat debut over Kosovo in 1999 and, in June 2025, delivered GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs against Iran's Fordow and Natanz nuclear sites - the largest B-2 strike ever flown.[1][2]

Origins & Concept

The B-2's story begins with failure. Jack Northrop spent the 1940s convinced that the pure flying wing - no fuselage, no tail, nothing that didn't produce lift - was the future of aviation. His piston-engined XB-35 and jet-powered YB-49 proved the aerodynamics were tantalisingly efficient and infuriatingly unstable; the program died in 1949, the prototypes were scrapped, and Northrop the man never got over it.[3]

Three decades later, the wing came back for a reason its inventor never imagined. By the late 1970s the Pentagon understood that radar cross-section, not speed or altitude, would decide whether bombers survived Soviet air defences - and a flying wing, with no vertical surfaces and no fuselage corners to bounce radar energy back, was close to the ideal stealth shape. The Advanced Technology Bomber competition of 1979-81 pitted Northrop's smooth, curved wing against a faceted Lockheed design; Northrop won in October 1981.[1]

In April 1980, Northrop's engineers brought their dying founder - by then unable to speak - into a secure facility and showed him a model of the ATB. Jack Northrop studied the shape he'd fought for all his life, took a pen, and wrote his reply.[4]

Design & Engineering

Where the F-117's first-generation stealth used flat facets - a concession to the computing power of the 1970s - the B-2 belongs to the second generation: continuously curved surfaces shaped by vastly more capable computers, scattering radar energy smoothly away in every direction. The result is an aircraft the size of an airliner with a reported radar signature closer to that of a bird.[5]

Everything about the design serves the signature. The four F118 turbofans are buried deep in the wing, breathing through S-shaped ducts that hide their radar-bright fan faces; the exhausts exit above the wing through flattened slots that screen the heat from below. The leading edges hide antennas; the skin is gap-free to tolerances that made every panel a custom job; and the whole aircraft is coated in radar-absorbent material so sensitive that the fleet lives in climate-controlled hangars.[1]

A tailless wing should be unflyable, and left alone, it would be. The B-2's quadruple-redundant fly-by-wire system makes hundreds of corrections a second, while yaw - the job of the missing rudder - is handled by split 'drag rudder' surfaces at the wingtips that crack open into the airstream. From the cockpit, crews report, it flies like a fighter with very long wings.[5]

The payoff for all of it is carried in two internal weapons bays: over 40,000 lb of ordnance, from eighty independently-targeted 500 lb JDAMs to a pair of 30,000 lb GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators - or the B61 and B83 nuclear weapons that are the reason the aircraft exists at all.[6]

Development

The B-2 was designed for a production run of 132 and a world that ended two years after its first flight. Developed as one of the largest black programs in history - more than $20 billion spent before the public saw a photograph - it was unveiled at Palmdale in November 1988 and flew on 17 July 1989.[1] Then the Berlin Wall came down, and Congress cut the program to 21 aircraft, driving the per-unit cost, with development included, to roughly $2.1 billion: the most expensive aircraft ever built.[1]

Each airframe is individually named 'Spirit of' a state, and the tiny fleet has been based at a single home since the first delivery in December 1993: Whiteman AFB, Missouri, with the 509th Bomb Wing - the direct descendant of the unit that flew the atomic missions of August 1945.[6]

The fleet's size makes every airframe precious, and its history shows it. The 2008 loss of 'Spirit of Kansas' on Guam - moisture in three sensors, a violent uncommanded pitch-up, both pilots out safely - erased almost five percent of the force in a moment.[7] When 'Spirit of Washington' burned on the ground in 2010, the Air Force spent four years rebuilding it rather than lose another. Only in 2024, with the B-21 in flight test, did the calculus change: the 'Spirit of Hawaii', damaged in a 2022 landing fire, was quietly divested rather than repaired, and the fleet settled at 19.[8]

Blocks & Modernisation

The fleet was delivered to three standards while testing continued. Early aircraft arrived as interim Block 10 machines with limited weapons and a training focus, followed by nuclear-capable Block 20s carrying the GATS/GAM precision system. Block 30, reached across the fleet by mid-2000, was the definitive configuration: radar-absorbent material applied edge to edge, terrain-following modes for the AN/APQ-181 radar, and JDAM integration. Every earlier airframe was cycled back through Palmdale for conversion, work that in some cases amounted to partially rebuilding the aircraft's skin.[1]

With only 21 built, the B-2 has been modernised in place rather than replaced by new-build variants. The AN/APQ-181 was converted to an active electronically scanned array in the late 2000s, communications moved to survivable EHF satcom, and the Defensive Management System that locates threat radars was overhauled against modern integrated air defences. The most consequential change was structural: reinforcing the weapons bays for the 30,000 lb GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator took fifteen years of work before its operational debut over Fordow.[5]

Combat History

The B-2 went to war over Kosovo in March 1999 and immediately established the pattern it has followed ever since: take off from Missouri, fly a day and a half, arrive unannounced over the most defended airspace of the conflict, and open the war. In 78 days of Operation Allied Force, B-2s flew under one percent of the sorties and destroyed a third of the targets, delivering the brand-new JDAM through weather that blinded everything else.[1]

Afghanistan in 2001 brought the longest combat missions in aviation history - over 44 hours from Whiteman to the target and on to Diego Garcia, crews rotating naps on a cot behind the seats. Iraq in 2003, Libya in 2011 and 2017, and Yemen in October 2024 all followed the same script: hardened targets, first night, no warning.[5]

The script reached its logical conclusion on 21 June 2025. Seven B-2s launched from Missouri into a 37-hour round trip while others tracked west toward Guam as a visible decoy. Over Iran, they delivered fourteen GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators[9] - 30,000 lb weapons developed over fifteen years specifically for this aircraft and, in effect, for this target - into the ventilation shafts of the Fordow underground enrichment complex and into Natanz. It was the largest B-2 strike ever flown and the MOP's combat debut; not a single aircraft was detected en route.[2][10]

Eight months later the Spirits were back, striking Iran's hardened ballistic-missile infrastructure in the opening nights of Operation Epic Fury alongside B-1s and B-52s.[11] Twenty-seven years after Kosovo, there is still exactly one aircraft that gets these missions.

It is a strange kind of fame. The B-2's combat record contains one grim asterisk: on 7 May 1999, a B-2 delivered the JDAMs that struck the Chinese embassy in Belgrade - the weapons hit precisely where they were aimed, but faulty target intelligence had aimed them at the wrong building. Three people died, and the incident remains a case study in the difference between a perfect weapon and a perfect targeting process.[12]

Current Status & Outlook

The B-2's successor is, fittingly, itself - refined. The Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider is a smaller, cheaper, more producible flying wing that inherits the B-2's formula and, eventually, its mission. The first operational Raiders arrive at Ellsworth AFB in 2027, and in 2026 the Air Force confirmed that Whiteman - the B-2's only home - will be the second B-21 base, keeping stealth bombers on the same Missouri flightline through the transition.[13]

The 19 remaining Spirits are not going quietly - the Air Force confirmed in 2023 that the aircraft damaged by fire at Whiteman in 2022 would never be repaired, permanently reducing the fleet from 20.[14] Recent budgets fund the B-2 into the 2030s, with communications and defensive-system upgrades to keep it viable; 2026 planning keeps the type flying alongside the B-1 toward 2037 if needed.[15] As Fordow demonstrated, there are still targets in the world that only a B-2 can reach - and will be until the B-21 force matures.

When the last Spirit does retire, it will end one of the strangest production runs in aviation: an aircraft so capable it reshaped war planning, so expensive it nearly ended with the Cold War that created it, and so far ahead of its time that its replacement is, essentially, the same shape.
