The Tu-160 is a four-engine, variable-sweep supersonic strategic bomber designed by the Tupolev bureau and built at the Kazan Aircraft Production Association. It first flew on 18 December 1981, entered service with the Soviet Long-Range Aviation in April 1987, and remains Russia's largest and fastest bomber. [1]
At a maximum takeoff weight of 606,271 lb it is the heaviest combat aircraft ever built, and it carries up to 99,208 lb of cruise missiles in two internal bays. Forty-one were completed in the original 1984-1992 run; production restarted at Kazan in the 2020s, but only a handful of new aircraft have been delivered against a 2015 target of 50. [1] [2]
The Soviet Union launched a competition for a new supersonic strategic bomber in 1967, and reframed it in 1972 as a multi-mission requirement in response to the American B-1 programme. Tupolev's submission beat the Myasishchev M-18 and the Sukhoi T-4, and the design was accepted in 1972. Western observers first saw the aircraft in a satellite photograph taken at Zhukovsky airfield in November 1981, a month before its first flight - the source of the NATO reporting name Blackjack, which Russian crews have never used. To them it is the Belyy Lebed, the White Swan, after its anti-flash white finish. [1]
Series production ran at Kazan from 1984 to 1992, delivering 32 serial aircraft behind nine test airframes. The first operational examples went to the 184th Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment at Pryluky in the Ukrainian SSR in April 1987. One of the early production aircraft was lost during manufacturer's flight tests in March 1987, though the test crew ejected. [1] [3]
The Tu-160 uses a blended wing-body with variable-geometry outer wing panels that sweep from 20 to 65 degrees, full-span leading-edge slats and double-slotted trailing-edge flaps. Titanium makes up about 30 percent of the structure, and the single largest component in the aircraft is the six-tonne wing sweep hinge carrier. It was the first Soviet combat aircraft to fly with a fly-by-wire control system. [1]
The four NK-32 afterburning turbofans produce 245 kN each with reheat, and unlike the B-1B - whose fixed inlets cap it at Mach 1.2 - the Tu-160 kept variable intake ramps, so it can still reach Mach 2.05 at altitude. That decision cost it radar signature: the shaping reduces returns compared with earlier Soviet bombers but falls well short of genuine stealth, which is why the aircraft is used as a stand-off missile launcher rather than a penetrating bomber. Two rotary launchers in tandem weapons bays each hold six Kh-55SM, Kh-101 or Kh-102 cruise missiles, and there is no defensive gun. [1] [2]
When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, 19 of the roughly 30 delivered Tu-160s were sitting at Pryluky, inside newly independent Ukraine, which had no strategic mission for them and no money to fly them. Eleven were cut up in the late 1990s under the American-funded Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction programme, the first of them dismantled in November 1998. [1]
Eight of the remaining aircraft were flown back to Russia in 1999 as part of a settlement of Ukraine's natural gas debt, roughly doubling the size of Russia's usable fleet at a stroke. One airframe was kept and is preserved at the Poltava Museum of Long-Range and Strategic Aviation. [1]
The Tu-160 waited 28 years for its first combat mission, flying it on 17 November 2015 when several aircraft launched Kh-101 cruise missiles from over the Mediterranean at targets in Syria's Idlib and Aleppo provinces, alongside Tu-95MS bombers. Reports of the number of missiles fired in that opening series of strikes range from 34 to 83, with 14 targets claimed destroyed. The aircraft had been given a conventional weapons capability only in the mid-2000s; before that it was purely a nuclear platform. [1]
Since 2022 it has been used the same way against Ukraine, firing Kh-101s from Russian or Caspian airspace - eight missiles aimed at Vinnytsia airport on 6 March 2022, four to six at Kyiv from over the Caspian on 26 June 2022. It has never been sent through Ukrainian air defences, and that is a deliberate limitation rather than caution: the airframe has no meaningful stealth, so its value lies entirely in the reach of the missiles it carries. Newer weapons including the Kh-BD, credited with a 6,500 km range, extend that reach further still. [1] [2]
Between 1989 and 1990 the Tu-160 set 44 world records for speed, altitude and payload in its weight class. Long-range flights have continued to serve as demonstrations since: two aircraft flew a 23-hour patrol covering 18,000 km in June 2010, two deployed 7,000 km non-stop to Chukotka in the Russian Far East in August 2018, and two flew 11,000 km non-stop to South Africa in October 2019 with air-to-air refuelling - the type's first visit to the African continent. Some deployments are more pointed. Two aircraft went to Venezuela in September 2008 during a period of sharp US-Russian tension, escorted by NATO fighters for much of the Atlantic crossing, and repeated the trip in December 2018 with An-124 and Il-62 support. In October 2008 twelve Tu-160s and Tu-95s flew Russia's largest strategic exercise since 1984, including the first firing of a full Tu-160 missile load. Interceptions are routine: British and Norwegian fighters met a pair near the UK in September 2007, Danish F-16s that December, and Colombian Kfirs after two aircraft crossed into Colombian airspace without clearance in November 2013. Restarting Tu-160 production proved far harder than announcing it. Kazan had to digitise paper drawings, restore vacuum welding capability for the titanium structure and rebuild a supplier network that had been distributed across the Soviet Union. The first newly assembled aircraft flew in January 2022; two were delivered in 2025, against a 2015 ambition of 50 aircraft and a firm 2018 contract for ten, and no completion schedule for that contract has been published. President Vladimir Putin put the price of those aircraft at more than 15 billion rubles each, roughly $240M at 2018 exchange rates. [2] [4]
The Federation of American Scientists put the active fleet at 15 Tu-160 and Tu-160M aircraft in May 2026. Ukrainian long-range drone strikes have reached both the fleet and its production line - the Kazan plant was hit on 20 January 2025, and Operation Spiderweb struck five bomber bases on 1 June 2025 - forcing Russia to disperse its bombers and harden their bases. Modernisation is concentrated on systems rather than structure: new radar, digital cockpit, navigation, communications and countermeasures, plus NK-32-02 engines intended to improve fuel efficiency and range. Tu-160s do not broadcast civil ADS-B and never appear directly on Flightradar24. Their movements surface indirectly - through NATO, Norwegian and British fighters scrambled to shadow them over the Norwegian and Barents Seas, and occasionally through the Il-78 tankers and Il-62 support aircraft that accompany long-range deployments, some of which do transmit.

Tu-160 'Mikhail Gromov' of the 121st Guards Regiment left Engels-2 on a post-maintenance check flight after an engine change and broke up about 41 km from the base. A defect in the fuel tank venting system let a partial vacuum build in the wing tanks as fuel was consumed, imploding a tank and causing structural failure. All four crew were killed.
Two Tu-160s, 'Vasily Senko' and 'Aleksandr Molodchiy', flew to Venezuela during a period of heightened US-Russian tension and were escorted by NATO fighters for much of the transatlantic crossing.

Only a handful of Tu-160s exist outside the active Russian fleet. The single preserved airframe is the one Ukraine retained when the rest of its inherited fleet was scrapped or traded away.
