The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard-delta multirole fighter developed jointly by the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain. It first flew in 1994 and entered service in 2003, and is deliberately unstable in all axes to maximise agility.[1]
It has flown more than a million hours for nine air forces without losing an aircraft to enemy fire, has flown combat operations over Libya, Iraq and Syria, and has stood NATO quick-reaction alert duty for two decades.[2]
The Typhoon's roots go back to 1979, when British Aerospace and Germany's MBB proposed a joint 'European Collaborative Fighter' - and to separate national efforts before that, including UK studies for a Jaguar replacement and a West German competition that MBB's canard-delta design had already won.[1] France joined that collaboration in 1979, then effectively broke it: Dassault's insistence on design leadership, a French requirement for a carrier-capable version, and a dispute over engines split the group apart in 1981.[1]
What followed was renamed and relaunched twice more - the Agile Combat Aircraft programme in 1982, then the Future European Fighter Aircraft (FEFA) programme in 1983 - before France finally exited for good in 1985 to build the Rafale alone, briefly taking Spain with it until Spain rejoined the European group weeks later.[1] The data underpinning the design came from a real demonstrator: the British Aerospace EAP, a technology testbed sharing the Typhoon's cranked-delta and canard layout, which first flew at Warton on 6 August 1986.[3]
Development formally began under Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH, a Munich-based consortium established in 1986, and the first prototype - Development Aircraft 1 (DA1) - flew from Manching, Bavaria on 27 March 1994, flown by DASA chief test pilot Peter Weger. It still carried interim Rolls-Royce Spey engines; the definitive Eurojet EJ200 came later.[2] German reunification nearly killed the whole project a second time - Chancellor Helmut Kohl had campaigned on cancelling it, and was only stopped by the penalty clauses his own predecessors had written into the contracts.[1] The Typhoon name itself wasn't adopted until a Farnborough ceremony on 2 September 1998 - reportedly over some German unease, since the wartime Hawker Typhoon had spent 1944 strafing German positions in France.[1]
The Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard-delta design that is deliberately relaxed in stability across all three axes - it would be uncontrollable by a human pilot alone, and stays flyable only through a quadruplex digital fly-by-wire system that manages canards, flaperons and a single rudder to keep the airframe pointed where the pilot wants it.[1] That instability is the trade for agility: low wing loading, a 53-degree leading-edge sweep and a very light carbon-fibre and titanium airframe - about 82% composite by structure - combine to make it one of the most manoeuvrable fighters in NATO service.[1]
Two Eurojet EJ200 afterburning turbofans give the Typhoon supercruise - sustained supersonic flight without afterburner - at speeds Eurofighter rates as high as Mach 1.5, with a Singaporean evaluation once recording Mach 1.21 on a hot day carrying a combat load.[1] Sensor data from the CAPTOR radar, the PIRATE infrared search-and-track system, and off-board sources like AWACS are all fused by the Attack and Identification System into one picture for the pilot, backed by the Praetorian defensive-aids suite for radar, missile and laser warning.[1] The cockpit was itself a first: the Typhoon's Direct Voice Input system was the first speech-recognition system fitted to a production military cockpit, handling around 26 non-critical functions by voice command.[1]
The original CAPTOR radar - a mechanically scanned set - is being replaced fleet-wide by the AESA-based Captor-E family, splitting into the Mk0/Mk1/Mk2 European Common Radar System variants for different partner nations; the RAF's Mk2 adds electronic-warfare and attack capability developed jointly by Leonardo and BAE Systems.[1] None of this makes the Typhoon a stealth aircraft, but its chin intake, swept edges and radar-absorbent coatings were all shaped to keep its frontal radar return down without compromising the aerodynamics a pure air-superiority fighter needed.[1]
The Typhoon's first decade in service was mostly about air defence - Quick Reaction Alert scrambles against Russian bombers probing NATO airspace, and Baltic Air Policing rotations - rather than combat.[1] That changed on 21 March 2011, when RAF Typhoons flew their first operational mission from Gioia del Colle, Italy, enforcing the UN-mandated no-fly zone over Libya under Operation Ellamy, just days after the deployment was ordered; Italian Air Force Typhoons joined combat air patrols over Libya within the week.[4]
Ground-attack capability, initially absent from the design, matured through successive weapons packages - Storm Shadow cruise missiles, Brimstone, Paveway precision bombs and the Meteor beyond-visual-range missile were folded in through the UK's Project Centurion, cleared for full service on 18 December 2018 to let Typhoon take over strike duties from the retiring Tornado GR4.[1] RAF Typhoons flew strike missions against ISIS in Iraq and Syria under Operation Shader from 2015 onward, and on 14 December 2021 an RAF Typhoon over southern Syria destroyed a small hostile drone with an ASRAAM missile - the RAF's first air-to-air kill since the Falklands War, 39 years earlier.[5]
The programme has not been without loss, almost none of it to enemy action. The first hull loss came in November 2002, when a Spanish development aircraft lost both engines at 45,000 ft and crashed near Toledo, its two test pilots ejecting safely.[6] The type's first fatality followed in August 2010, when a Typhoon crashed on take-off from Morón air base, killing a visiting Royal Saudi Air Force officer.[7] A German Typhoon collided in mid-air with a Learjet role-playing a hijacked airliner near Olsberg in June 2014 - the Learjet crew were killed, but the damaged Typhoon landed safely.[8] The worst month came in autumn 2017, when a Saudi jet flew into a mountain over Yemen during a combat sortie, an Italian Typhoon crashed attempting a loop at an airshow, and a Spanish Typhoon crashed after a National Day flypast - three unrelated losses inside four weeks.[9]
By January 2026 the worldwide Eurofighter fleet - now nine operator nations including Austria, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Qatar alongside the four founding partners - had passed one million flying hours, a milestone Eurofighter marked as proof of the airframe's durability two decades into service.[10] The RAF's own fleet has never lost a Typhoon in over two decades of flying, a record almost unheard of for a front-line fast-jet type.[1]
Even so, retirement has already begun at the older end of the fleet: the UK's 2021 Defence Command Paper set out retiring all RAF Tranche 1 aircraft by 2025, and 26 of those early jets have already been scrapped or stripped for spares rather than upgraded to later standards - a decision that continues to be argued over in the UK Parliament.[1] Looking further ahead, Germany, the UK and Italy are all developing successor programmes - Germany, France and Spain's New Generation Fighter, and the UK-Italy-Japan Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP/Tempest) - meaning the Typhoon that only entered service in 2003 is already flying alongside blueprints for its own replacement.[1] In the meantime, the type keeps evolving: an Aerodynamic Modification Kit, new engine growth options and the ECRS Mk2 radar are all in development to keep tranche 3 aircraft credible into the 2030s.

A two-seat Spanish Air Force Typhoon crashed moments after takeoff from Morón. A visiting Royal Saudi Air Force lieutenant colonel was killed; the Spanish major flying with him ejected safely. The type's first fatal accident briefly grounded the German and British fleets.

Almost the entire Typhoon fleet remains in active service, so there is no wave of retirees in museums yet - but three of the original development aircraft that proved the design are preserved and on public display.
