The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt is a single-seat fighter built for the U.S. Army Air Forces, and the heaviest single-engine piston fighter of the Second World War. Its size follows from one decision: the turbosupercharger and its ducting were placed in the rear fuselage, which dictated the airframe around them. The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt is a single-seat, single-engine fighter and fighter-bomber built for the United States Army Air Forces by Republic Aviation. Alexander Kartveli designed it around a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine and a General Electric turbosupercharger; it first flew on 6 May 1941 and flew its first combat mission on 10 March 1943. At up to 17,500 lb loaded it was the heaviest single-engine piston fighter of the Second World War. [1] [2]
Republic and Curtiss-Wright built 15,636 Thunderbolts between 1941 and 1945, more than any other American fighter. Nicknamed the "Jug", the type flew more than 746,000 sorties for 3,499 combat losses and a claimed 4.6:1 aerial kill ratio, and after the P-51 Mustang displaced it from long-range bomber escort it became the USAAF's foremost fighter-bomber. Redesignated F-47 in 1947, it left U.S. Air National Guard service in 1953 and was retired by its last military operator, Peru, in 1966. [2] [1]
The P-47 began as the XP-47, a light interceptor Kartveli developed for the U.S. Army Air Corps as a successor to the Seversky P-35 he had helped design. By the spring of 1940 the Army judged that aircraft and the parallel XP-44 inferior to the Luftwaffe fighters then in service, so Kartveli discarded the lightweight approach and drew a far larger aeroplane built around the turbosupercharged R-2800. The Air Corps ordered a prototype in September 1940 as the XP-47B. Kartveli's own summary of what he had produced was that it would be "a dinosaur, but a dinosaur with good proportions". [2]
The turbosupercharger was the whole point of the design and the source of every compromise that followed. Fitting it meant an empty weight of 9,900 lb on the prototype, 65 percent more than the YP-43 it replaced. Lowry P. Brabham flew the XP-47B for the first time on 6 May 1941 from Farmingdale, New York, reaching 412 mph at 25,800 ft and climbing to 15,000 ft in five minutes; oil dripping onto the exhaust filled the cockpit with smoke during the flight. That performance was enough for the newly formed USAAF to order 171 production aircraft in August 1941, with the first delivered in December. The prototype itself was lost in an accident on 8 August 1942. [2] [1]
The turbosupercharger installation determined the shape of the aircraft. Exhaust from the R-2800 was piped aft along both sides of the cockpit, through wastegates, to a turbine mounted low in the fuselage between the cockpit and the tail, which spun at 21,300 rpm at full power; the compressed air it produced was ducted forward again through an intercooler to the engine. That plumbing occupied roughly half of the fuselage's internal volume, so the fuselage was sized around the ducting rather than around the pilot. The same cooling requirement produced the deep "horse collar" cowling housing the cooling-air, oil-cooler and intercooler intakes, and forced the wing to be mounted high enough to give the 146-inch four-blade propeller ground clearance. The consequences ran in both directions. A P-47D had an empty weight of about 10,000 lb on a 300 sq ft wing, against roughly 12,000 lb loaded for a P-51 Mustang, and the turbosupercharger gave it maximum power at 27,000 ft where it stayed fast and manoeuvrable in thin air. The size also bought armament and survivability: eight .50-calibre Brownings with 425 rounds per gun, firing at about 100 rounds a second, and an air-cooled radial with no coolant system to be punctured. On 26 June 1943, escorting B-17s to Villacoublay, Robert S. Johnson of the 56th Fighter Group was hit by an Fw 190 and landed at Manston with 21 20 mm cannon strikes and more than 200 7.92 mm bullet holes in his aircraft. [3] [4] [2]
The 171 P-47Bs were followed by 602 P-47Cs, which added an 8-inch fuselage plug ahead of the cockpit to move the centre of gravity, an all-metal rudder to cure a tail flutter problem that had killed pilots, and from the C-2 block a centreline shackle for a bomb or drop tank. The P-47D then became the largest single fighter family of the war at 12,558 aircraft, built at Republic's Farmingdale and Evansville plants and by Curtiss-Wright at Buffalo, which delivered 354. At peak output the plants were completing 28 Thunderbolts a day, at a 1945 unit cost of $85,578 - about two-thirds more than a P-51 Mustang at $51,572. [5] [6] [7]
Two mid-war changes mattered most. From the D-22 block a 13 ft 1 in Hamilton Standard paddle-blade propeller replaced the 12 ft 2 in Curtiss Electric unit, converting more of the engine's power into thrust at low speed and materially improving climb - a change German pilots noticed immediately, since climbing away steeply had until then been a reliable escape from a P-47. From the D-25 block the rear fuselage was cut down and a sliding bubble canopy adapted from the Hawker Typhoon replaced the razorback spine, fixing the type's poor rearward view; the resulting loss of directional stability was answered on the D-40 block with a dorsal fin fillet. Production ended with the 1,816 long-winged P-47Ns for the Pacific, the last of them, 45-50123, delivered in December 1945. [5] [2]
The Thunderbolt's first role was long-range escort for Eighth Air Force heavy bombers, and it was not initially good at it. The 4th Fighter Group flew the type's first combat mission on 10 March 1943, a sweep over France, and early P-47s could cover the bombers only on the first and last legs of a raid because internal fuel had to compete for space with the turbosupercharger ducting. The 4th Fighter Group first used external tanks operationally on 28 July 1943, reaching the German border and claiming nine victories, and purpose-built 75-gallon drop tanks entered service on 30 July, pushing endurance towards three hours. Internal capacity later rose to 375 US gallons, and from March 1944 P-47s could reach Berlin. [8] [5]
That still was not enough. The P-47 accelerated and climbed poorly at low and medium altitude, where the Yak-9, La-5FN, Bf 109G and Fw 190A all had the advantage over early models, and the Merlin-engined P-51 flew further on far less fuel. Eighth Air Force fighter groups converted to the Mustang through 1944 and the Thunderbolt was moved to ground attack, where its weight, firepower and damage tolerance were assets rather than liabilities. The 56th Fighter Group was the only Eighth Air Force group still flying Thunderbolts by choice at the end of the war, finishing with 677.5 aerial and 311 ground claims for 128 aircraft lost. [2] [8]
As a fighter-bomber the P-47's load grew steadily: 500 lb bombs by late 1943, 1,000 lb bombs and M8 4.5-inch rockets in mid-production aircraft, and 5-inch HVARs on 1944 machines, up to a maximum of 2,500 lb. Pilots commonly carried two 500 lb bombs and used skip-bombing, including skipping bombs into railway tunnels to reach sheltering trains. Between D-Day and VE Day, Thunderbolt pilots claimed 86,000 railway cars, 9,000 locomotives, 6,000 armoured fighting vehicles and 68,000 trucks. During Operation Cobra on 29 July 1944 the 405th Fighter Group attacked a German column trapped near Roncey in Normandy and, between 15:10 and 21:40, claimed 66 tanks, 204 vehicles and 11 guns. [2]
In the Pacific the type served with the Fifth Air Force from 1943. Colonel Neel E. Kearby of the 348th Fighter Group led a flight of four P-47s against roughly 40 Japanese aircraft over Wewak, New Guinea, on 11 October 1943 and shot down six, an action that earned the Medal of Honor; he had 22 victories when he was shot down and killed over Wewak on 5 March 1944. Allied operators took large numbers: the RAF received 240 razorback Thunderbolt Is and 590 bubble-canopy Mk IIs, France 446, the Soviet Union 203, Brazil 67 of which 48 flew in combat, and Mexico's Escuadron 201 flew 791 sorties against Japan without losing a pilot or an aircraft to enemy action. P-47 pilots also claimed 20 Me 262s and four Ar 234s in air combat. [2] [9]
The Thunderbolt was redesignated F-47 in 1947, served with Strategic Air Command in 1946-47, remained with the active U.S. Air Force until 1949 and with the Air National Guard until 1953. It was not sent to Korea, largely because the USAF and the Guard held more F-51 Mustangs, a decision some later criticised given the Thunderbolt's greater tolerance of ground fire. Abroad it stayed useful far longer: France flew P-47s in Algeria, Italy operated 100 from 1947 to 1950, Turkey 180 from 1948 to 1954, Yugoslavia 150 from 1952 and Iran 50 from 1948, while Peru kept 56 in service until 1966. Several dozen airframes survive and roughly a dozen are airworthy. Duxford holds two. IWM Duxford's American Air Museum displays a static P-47D in the markings of the 78th Fighter Group, which flew Thunderbolts from Duxford itself in 1943-44 before converting to Mustangs and whose aircraft 42-26671, coded MX-X, was lost over Germany on 19 July 1944; the museum stands as a memorial to the 30,000 U.S. Army Air Forces personnel who died flying from Britain. Separately, airworthy P-47D-40-RA 45-49192 "Nellie" (G-THUN), an Evansville-built aircraft that served with the Peruvian Air Force before restoration, is based at Duxford Aerodrome with a private warbird operator rather than with the IWM collection. In the United States, the National Air and Space Museum displays P-47D-30-RA 44-32691 at the Udvar-Hazy Center, and the National Museum of the USAF shows razorback 42-23278 painted as Kearby's "Fiery Ginger IV" beside the real aircraft's recovered vertical fin. No P-47 has flown in military service since the 1960s, so the type code P47 appears on Flightradar24 only when one of the small number of privately owned airworthy Thunderbolts files a flight plan - usually as a general-aviation flight repositioning to or from an air show. In the UK, watch for G-THUN (P-47D 45-49192 "Nellie") operating out of Duxford Aerodrome (EGSU) during the summer display season. Most warbird display flying is local and uncontrolled, so many sorties never generate a track at all.

The sole XP-47B prototype was lost in an accident, 15 months after its first flight. Production of the P-47B was already under way by then and the loss did not interrupt the programme.
The 4th Fighter Group flew the Thunderbolt's first combat mission, a fighter sweep over France from England. Radio interference between the aircraft made the sortie ineffective, and the type's radios were reworked before it flew regular escort missions the following month.
Escorting B-17s attacking Villacoublay, 56th Fighter Group pilot Robert S. Johnson was hit by a Focke-Wulf Fw 190 that shattered his canopy, set an engine fire and wounded him in the nose and right leg. He flew back across the Channel and landed at Manston; the aircraft was later found to have taken 21 20 mm cannon shells and more than 200 7.92 mm machine-gun rounds. Johnson finished the war with 27 aerial victories.
The 4th Fighter Group used external tanks operationally for the first time, reaching the German border and claiming nine victories. Purpose-built 75-gallon drop tanks entered service two days later on 30 July, raising escort endurance towards three hours and beginning the incremental range growth that eventually took the P-47 to Berlin in March 1944.
Colonel Neel E. Kearby of the 348th Fighter Group led a flight of four P-47s against about 40 Japanese aircraft over Wewak, New Guinea, and shot down six of them flying P-47D 42-75908 'Fiery Ginger III'. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for the action.
Kearby was shot down and killed over Wewak with 22 aerial victories, then the leading score in the Fifth Air Force. The recovered vertical fin of his aircraft, 'Fiery Ginger IV', is displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force alongside a P-47D painted in his markings.
P-47D 42-26671, coded MX-X and flown by the 82nd Fighter Squadron of the Duxford-based 78th Fighter Group, failed to return from a mission over Germany and was recorded in Missing Air Crew Report 6784. The serial is carried today by the static Thunderbolt in IWM Duxford's American Air Museum.
During Operation Cobra in Normandy, the 405th Fighter Group attacked a German column trapped between Roncey and St-Denis-le-Vetu. Between 15:10 and 21:40 the group claimed 66 tanks, 204 vehicles and 11 guns destroyed, one of the heaviest single-day ground-attack results credited to the type.
First Lieutenant Raymond L. Knight of the 346th Fighter Squadron, 350th Fighter Group, flew repeated low-level strikes against German airfields in Italy's Po Valley on 24 and 25 April 1945. With his P-47D badly damaged by anti-aircraft fire and his unit short of aircraft, he chose not to bail out and crashed in the Apennines. He received a posthumous Medal of Honor.
Peru withdrew the last of its 56 Thunderbolts, ending 23 years of front-line and second-line military service for the type worldwide. Several Peruvian airframes were subsequently bought by warbird collectors and restored, including 45-49192, now airworthy at Duxford.
