The Airbus A400M Atlas is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft built by Airbus for European and allied air forces. Conceived in 1982 to replace the C-130 Hercules and Transall C-160, it first flew in 2009 and entered service with the French Air Force in 2013, after a troubled development programme that nearly collapsed in 2010.[1]
Sized between the C-130 it replaces and the larger Boeing C-17, the A400M carries heavier loads onto rougher airstrips than a Hercules while retaining the range to airlift cargo across continents, powered by the most powerful turboprop engines ever fielded in the West.[1]
The programme's roots go back to 1982, when Aerospatiale, British Aerospace, Lockheed and MBB formed the Future International Military Airlifter group to jointly design a C-130/Transall successor.[1] Lockheed walked away in 1989 to build its own upgraded Hercules, the C-130J, instead - the remaining European partners reorganised as Euroflag, later adding Italy's Alenia and Spain's CASA.[1] A launch contract for 212 aircraft was finally signed in May 2003 between Airbus Military and OCCAR, the multinational procurement agency representing eight partner nations, after a contentious engine competition in which the newly formed Europrop International consortium's TP400 beat a Pratt & Whitney Canada bid that United Technologies alleged had been undercut by political interference.[1]
What followed was one of the roughest development programmes in modern military aviation. The first flight, planned for 2008, slipped to 11 December 2009 after engine problems, and by mid-2009 the French Senate was told the project was €5 billion over budget and three to four years late, burning through €1-1.5 billion a year.[1] Airbus CEO Tom Enders warned the whole programme could be abandoned; South Africa cancelled its order outright in November 2009, and a PricewaterhouseCoopers audit projected the overrun could reach €11.2 billion.[1] The partner nations chose to save it: in November 2010 they finalised a renegotiated contract and lent Airbus Military €1.5 billion, though the total order shrank from 180 aircraft to 170 in the process.[1]
Airbus later admitted its own share of the blame. 'We underestimated the engine problems,' CEO Tom Enders told Bild am Sonntag in 2016. 'Airbus had let itself be persuaded by some well-known European leaders into using an engine made by an inexperienced consortium.'[1] EASA finally certified the aircraft in March 2013, and the first production A400M was delivered to the French Air Force that August - a decade after the launch contract, and roughly five years behind the original schedule.
The A400M was deliberately sized between the Lockheed C-130 Hercules and Boeing C-17 Globemaster III: it can carry cargo too large or heavy for a Hercules - up to 37 tonnes over 2,000 nmi, including light armoured vehicles, Patriot missile components or a Puma helicopter - while still operating from the short, rough, unprepared strips a C-17 cannot use.[1] Four Europrop TP400-D6 turboprops, the most powerful of their kind ever to enter Western service, turn eight-bladed composite scimitar propellers configured 'down between engines': the inboard and outboard propeller on each wing spin in opposite directions, cancelling torque and prop-wash, reducing yaw if an outboard engine fails, and letting Airbus shrink the tail fin by 17% and the tailplane by 8%.[1]
More than 30% of the airframe is composite material, including a carbon-fibre wing spanning 42.4 m that alone can carry 25 tonnes of fuel.[1] Inside, the A400M shares Airbus's fly-by-wire architecture and glass cockpit philosophy with its civil airliners, adapted for the military mission with a dual hydraulic-plus-electric actuation system designed to give some redundancy against battle damage, and a forward-looking infrared enhanced-vision system for the head-up display during low-level or night tactical flying.[1]
Beyond hauling cargo, the Atlas is built to be a multirole platform: it can air-drop up to 116 paratroopers or deliver vehicles and humanitarian aid by parachute, convert to a medical evacuation aircraft, and act as a tanker refuelling other aircraft - and, since further development work, helicopters - from wing-mounted pods or a centreline hose-and-drum unit.[1] None of this came easily: in 2016 Airbus had to fix a batch of faulty propeller gearboxes from supplier Avio Aero after a flawed heat-treatment process weakened their ring gears, and separately found stress-cracking in a fuselage alloy used on early airframes.[1]
The A400M's operational career began just months after entering service: a French Air Force aircraft flew its first mission on 29 December 2013, supporting Operation Serval in Mali.[1] The RAF logged its own operational debut in March 2015 with a cargo run to RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, and by September that year had become the type's flying-hours fleet leader.[1] In July 2018 a German Air Force A400M carried 75 soldiers from Wunstorf to Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan - the type's first flight into an active war zone, which the Luftwaffe's inspector called a milestone proving its defensive equipment worked for real.[1]
Humanitarian missions have proven just as demanding. French, German and British A400Ms flew disaster relief into the Caribbean after Hurricane Irma in September 2017, delivering a Puma helicopter and emergency supplies.[1] An RAF A400M carried search-and-rescue teams to Morocco after the devastating 2023 earthquake.[1] And in May 2026, an RAF Atlas flew nearly 10,000 km via Ascension Island - refuelling mid-air from a Voyager tanker - to air-drop 3.3 tonnes of medical supplies and paratroop medics onto Tristan da Cunha, one of the world's most remote inhabited islands, to treat a hantavirus case when the island's two-person medical team and oxygen supplies ran critically low.[1]
The type's most intense test came in August 2021: 25 A400Ms from six nations flew round-the-clock evacuation sorties from Kabul airport as the Afghan government collapsed, with German aircraft alone lifting out more than 5,300 people over 35 flights.[2] The programme has not been free of tragedy - a brand-new production aircraft crashed on its first test flight from Seville on 9 May 2015 after engine-control software was installed with corrupted data, freezing three engines at idle and killing 4 of the 6 crew aboard, grounding several partner fleets while investigators traced the fault.[3]
When the RAF retired its C-130J Hercules fleet in June 2023, the Atlas formally inherited the UK's tactical transport and special-forces support missions, including qualifying for rough-strip and beach-landing operations the Hercules had owned for six decades.[4] More than 130 aircraft have now been built for eight core operator nations, with export customers including Malaysia, Indonesia and Kazakhstan gradually growing the user base beyond the original European partners.[1]
The UK's 2025 Strategic Defence Review floated buying up to six further Atlases to grow the RAF fleet past 22, while Germany - having struggled for years to find buyers for 13 surplus airframes it no longer needed - eventually chose to keep them in service rather than sell them off.[1] One of the five original 'Grizzly' development aircraft, MSN4, retired to Bremen in November 2022 after nearly twelve years and 1,000 test flights proving capabilities from aerial refuelling to low-level flying, and now sits on permanent display at the site where every A400M is built.[5] More than a decade after its bruising development, the Atlas that partner nations almost cancelled twice is now the backbone of European tactical airlift - and the type export orders it once badly needed are, at last, arriving.

An A400M crashed shortly after takeoff during a pre-delivery test flight near Seville, Spain, killing four of the six crew. Investigators found engine-control software had been installed with erased calibration data on three of the four engines, causing them to shut down after takeoff.
Germany and other A400M operators grounded parts of their fleets after cracks were found in the aircraft's propeller gearboxes, forcing Airbus into a multi-year redesign and torque-limiting fix.

The A400M fleet is still young and almost entirely in active service, so there is no wave of retirees yet - but one of the original development aircraft that proved the design is preserved and on public display.
