The General Atomics MQ-1 Predator is a single-engine, propeller-driven, medium-altitude long-endurance remotely piloted aircraft built for the U.S. Air Force and the Central Intelligence Agency by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. It entered service in 1995 as the unarmed RQ-1 reconnaissance system and was redesignated MQ-1 in 2002, after being modified to carry two AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, making it the first armed drone in routine operational use. [1] [2]

The Air Force counted a Predator as a system rather than an airframe: four aircraft, a ground control station, a satellite communications link and the crews to run them. [1] About 360 were built between 1995 and 2018, and the fleet accumulated 2,061,864 flying hours, of which 1,904,287 were flown in combat, before the type was retired from operational service on 9 March 2018 in favour of the larger MQ-9 Reaper. Origins & Concept

The Predator descends from the work of engineer Abraham Karem, whose Albatross and Amber designs of the 1980s led to the GNAT 750, acquired by General Atomics when Karem's Leading Systems went bankrupt. The CIA flew GNAT 750s over Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993 and 1994, and the results were promising enough for the Department of Defense to fund a larger derivative. [5] General Atomics received the development contract in January 1994 and the first Predator flew six months later, on 3 July 1994, from El Mirage in the Mojave Desert. [2] [6]

The aircraft ran as an Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration until June 1996, when the Secretary of Defense named the Air Force as the operating service; production began in August 1997. [2] [6] A complete early system comprised four air vehicles, a ground control station, a satellite communications terminal and 55 personnel. The design traded speed and altitude for persistence: the pre-production RQ-1K used an 81 hp engine and cruised at about 87 mph for 16 hours, and the production aircraft was built to hold a single patch of ground under observation for a full day rather than to transit quickly or fly high. [6]

Design & Systems

The MQ-1B has a 55 ft wingspan, is 27 ft long and 7 ft high, weighs 1,130 lb empty and 2,250 lb at maximum takeoff. A 115 hp turbocharged Rotax 914F four-cylinder piston engine drives a pusher propeller behind an inverted-V tail. It cruises at about 84 mph, tops out at 135 mph, reaches 25,000 ft and has a range of 770 miles. [1] Those numbers define both its value and its ceiling as a combat aircraft: nothing in the airframe offers speed, altitude or agility, and the type carried no radar warning receiver, jammer or countermeasures.

Its useful load was sensors. The AN/AAS-52 Multi-Spectral Targeting System combines an infrared sensor, colour and monochrome television cameras and a laser designator in a single nose-mounted turret, and the same system that found and identified a target could guide the aircraft's own Hellfire missiles onto it. [1] [2] Control moved over two links: line-of-sight to a ground data terminal for takeoff and landing, then over-the-horizon by satellite for the mission itself. [7] The downlink was a known weak point. In December 2009 it emerged that Iraqi Shiite militants had captured live Predator video using SkyGrabber, commercial file-interception software costing $25.95, because the video feeds were unencrypted; the Pentagon had been aware of the vulnerability for years and began encrypting the feeds afterwards. [8]

Balkans Service & the Laser Designator

The Predator first deployed in July 1995 to Gjader, Albania, under Operation Nomad Vigil, flying reconnaissance over Bosnia until November. Three aircraft were lost on that deployment, at least two of them to Serb ground fire. [2] [9] NATO operations over Bosnia-Herzegovina followed from 1996. [3] The type's role in these years was purely to look: a slow, unarmed aircraft holding a video picture over a target area for hours while somebody else decided what to do about it.

During Operation Allied Force over Serbia in 1999, four Predators were lost. [9] The campaign also produced the modification that mattered most to the aircraft's future. The Air Force fitted laser designators to some Predators so that they could mark armoured vehicles for manned strike aircraft, though the war ended before the fit was used operationally. [9] [10] Having a designator on board removed the last technical obstacle to arming the aircraft: a laser-guided weapon fired from the Predator could be guided by the Predator's own turret, with no second aircraft and no ground party in the loop.

Arming the Predator

In June 2000 the Air Force's BIG SAFARI programme office was directed to examine arming the aircraft, and the AGM-114 Hellfire was chosen - a 100 lb laser-guided missile developed for anti-tank helicopters, small and light enough for an airframe with a 2,250 lb maximum takeoff weight. [10] [5] The first Hellfire was fired from an RQ-1 on 16 February 2001 at Indian Springs Air Force Auxiliary Field near Las Vegas. [2] [9] The modification was structurally modest - underwing hardpoints and two launch rails - but it converted a reconnaissance aircraft into a strike aircraft, and the two-missile limit it imposed shaped how the type was used for the rest of its career.

Armed Predators reached their overseas operating location on 16 September 2001, and the first armed mission was flown on 7 October 2001, the day host-nation approval came through. [2] About 40 Hellfires had been fired in Afghanistan by the end of 2002. [9] On 3 November 2002 a Predator strike in Yemen killed al-Qaeda operative Qaed Salim Sinan al-Harethi, the first direct U.S. strike of the war on terrorism outside Afghanistan. [2] The RQ-1 designation was changed to MQ-1 in 2002, the M standing for multi-role. [2] Seven weeks later, on 23 December 2002, an Iraqi MiG-25 shot down a Predator carrying AIM-92 Stinger air-to-air missiles over the southern no-fly zone - both aircraft fired, and no further Iraqi attempts on U.S. drones followed. [11]

Remote Split Operations

Remote split operations divided the crew from the aircraft. A small launch-and-recovery element at the forward operating base handled takeoff and landing through a line-of-sight ground data terminal, then handed control by satellite to a ground control station thousands of miles away, where a pilot and a sensor operator sat side by side to fly the mission. [7] [1] Most U.S. Predator sorties were flown this way from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada. [4] The arrangement let crews change shift while the aircraft stayed airborne, and it scaled: the Air Force flew five 24-hour combat air patrols with about 20 Predators in 2004, and 60 patrols by 2016. [3]

The system's costs are documented. The Predator's early mishap rate ran at roughly 43 aircraft lost per 100,000 flying hours, against two or three per 100,000 for manned Air Force aircraft; the service lost around 70 airframes in all, about 55 to weather and equipment failure. [3] [2] Sensor-mediated identification also failed. On 21 February 2010 a strike near Uruzgan, Afghanistan killed at least 23 civilians travelling in a convoy; the investigation ordered by General Stanley McChrystal found that the Predator crew monitoring the convoy from Nevada had provided inaccurate and unprofessional reporting, and that information suggesting the convoy was not a hostile force was ignored or downplayed. Four senior and two junior officers were reprimanded and an Air Force investigation into the Predator crew was ordered. [12]

Retirement, Exports & Preservation

The U.S. Air Force retired the MQ-1 on 9 March 2018, the 15th Expeditionary Attack Squadron flying the last combat mission and the 489th Attack Squadron the last local sortie, after which Creech became an all-MQ-9 base. [4] The replacement case was arithmetic: the Predator carried two Hellfires, while the MQ-9 Reaper carries roughly 2,500 lb of external stores, enough for four Hellfires and two 500 lb guided bombs. [11] Surplus airframes went to the Navy, to contractors and to allied air forces. [11] Italy retired its Predator A+ fleet on 19 December 2022 after 18 years, more than 31,000 flying hours and over 3,800 sorties flown from Amendola and Sigonella over Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Libya and the Horn of Africa. [13] The unarmed Predator XP, first flown on 27 June 2014, was licensed for export to customers barred from buying an armed system, and the U.S. Army's MQ-1C Gray Eagle keeps the airframe lineage in service. [14] [15]

Several airframes are preserved. The American Air Museum at IWM Duxford in Cambridgeshire displays an MQ-1B that served with the 57th Wing in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2008, flying nearly 5,000 hours across 288 individual sorties. [10] The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum holds Predator 3034, one of the first three unmanned aircraft to fly operational missions over Afghanistan after 11 September 2001, the first Predator to test-fire a Hellfire and the first to fire one in combat; it flew 164 operational sorties between September 2001 and January 2003, some of more than 20 hours, and was transferred from the Air Force in 2004. [16] The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force displays RQ-1 serial 94-3009 in its Cold War Gallery, presented by General Atomics in May 2001 [6], and the Royal Air Force Museum London holds MQ-1B serial 03-3119 in Hangar 6. [17]

Predators almost never appear on Flightradar24. The type was retired by the U.S. Air Force in 2018 and never broadcast civil ADS-B on operational sorties; the only realistic sightings during its service life were transponder-equipped test and ferry flights near Creech AFB and Indian Springs in Nevada, or Italian Air Force machines transiting between Amendola and Sigonella under civil flight rules. The related U.S. Army MQ-1C Gray Eagle remains in service but is similarly rare.

RQ-1 PredatorThe original unarmed reconnaissance designation, used from the 1994 Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration until 2002. The R prefix denoted reconnaissance and the Q an unmanned system. Pre-production RQ-1K airframes used an 81 hp engine and cruised at about 87 mph for 16 hours; the definitive RQ-1B took the 115 hp Rotax 914F. Roughly 285 aircraft were built under this designation.
MQ-1AThe armed conversion of the earlier lower-powered airframe, redesignated in 2002 when the M prefix for multi-role replaced R to reflect the addition of strike capability. It carried two AGM-114 Hellfire missiles on underwing rails and the AN/AAS-52 Multi-Spectral Targeting System, whose laser designator guided the missile the aircraft had just launched. These were the airframes that flew the first armed missions over Afghanistan.
MQ-1BThe definitive U.S. Air Force production variant and the subject of the specifications above. It combined the 115 hp turbocharged Rotax 914F, de-icing equipment, upgraded avionics and the full Hellfire fit. By December 2009 General Atomics had delivered 236 Predators with 147 in service and 32 more on contract, for a programme total of 248 aircraft at about $13.4 million each.
MQ-1C Gray EagleThe U.S. Army variant, developed as the Warrior for the Extended-Range Multi-Purpose competition begun in 2002 and first flown in October 2004. A Thielert Centurion heavy-fuel diesel engine, a 56 ft wingspan and an 800 lb payload allow up to 36 hours aloft at 25,000 ft and four Hellfires rather than two. About 204 have been built; an Extended Range version first flew in October 2016.
Predator XPThe export configuration, first flown on 27 June 2014 at Yuma Proving Ground and licensed by the U.S. government for sale to Middle Eastern, North African, South American and Asian customers that could not buy an armed system. It cannot carry weapons, and adds triple-redundant avionics, automatic takeoff and landing, Lynx multi-mode radar, maritime search and AIS, with 35 hours of endurance.

Preserved Predators are held on both sides of the Atlantic, including two airframes with documented combat records. The most publicly accessible in the United Kingdom is the MQ-1B in the American Air Museum at IWM Duxford.
