The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper is an uncrewed, remotely piloted aircraft built for surveillance and precision strike. Developed from the smaller MQ-1 Predator, it first flew in February 2001 and entered US Air Force service in 2007.[1]
A Reaper can loiter over a target for more than 24 hours, and carries sensors and up to eight Hellfire missiles or guided bombs, flown remotely by a two-person crew. It has flown extensively over Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya, and ten nations now operate Reaper variants; over the Red Sea and during the 2026 war with Iran, dozens have been shot down as cheaper air defences have caught up with the type.[1][2]
The Reaper is the Predator's ambitious child. General Atomics' MQ-1 Predator proved in the Balkans and Afghanistan that a slow, cheap, persistent aircraft with a satellite link could transform surveillance - and, after 2001, that it could kill. But the Predator was a converted reconnaissance machine: 100 knots, two Hellfires, allergic to weather.[1]
The company built the fix on its own money. 'Predator B' scaled the airframe up around a 900-hp turboprop - triple the speed, 15 times the payload - and first flew in February 2001, nine months before the armed-drone era it anticipated became official doctrine. The Air Force named it Reaper: the service's first true hunter-killer aircraft.[1]
Everything on the MQ-9 serves persistence. The 66-foot glider-like wing and Honeywell TPE331 turboprop keep it aloft for 24+ hours at up to 50,000 feet; the bulbous nose houses the satellite dish that lets crews at Creech AFB, Nevada fly aircraft over any continent (local crews handle takeoff and landing).[3]
The chin turret is the real weapon: the Multi-Spectral Targeting System fuses infrared, TV and laser designation into imagery that turned intelligence work from snapshots into unblinking video biography. Under the wings: up to eight Hellfires or 500 lb guided bombs - later joined by air-launched drones and even air-to-air missiles in trials.[3]
A Reaper crew is two people and a coffee machine: pilot and sensor operator, working shifts through a mission that may outlast three crews - the 'remote-split' model that made one aircraft's day-long stare a routine, industrial product.[1]
From 2007 the Reaper became the signature weapon of two decades of counter-terrorism: the persistent stare over Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya and the Sahel, and the strike that followed - including the January 2020 killing of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani at Baghdad airport, history's most consequential drone strike. The campaigns made the MQ-9 the most combat-proven aircraft of its generation and the centre of the era's fiercest ethical debates.[1]
The 2020s turned the hunter into prey. Over the Red Sea, Houthi missiles downed well over a dozen Reapers by 2025 - the drones deliberately absorbing risk that would otherwise fall on crewed aircraft - and the 2026 war with Iran cost around two dozen more, shot down or destroyed on the ground. The losses validated the original bargain (no aircrew were lost with them) while exposing its price tag: $30M+ per airframe.[2][4]
Ten nations now fly Reaper variants - from Britain's Protector RG1 (the certified, de-iced MQ-9B evolution) to France, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan and India's incoming fleet - on missions from maritime patrol to NATO's eastern flank.[1]
The Reaper's evolution has chased its own vulnerability. Extended-range tanks and hardpoint growth came first; then self-protection pods, and the SkyGuardian/SeaGuardian (MQ-9B) generation - bigger wing, 40-hour endurance, certified to fly in civil airspace and de-iced for all weather - which won Britain, Belgium, Japan and more.[5]
The USAF stopped buying MQ-9As in 2021 and planned a phase-out, but the losses over Iran changed the calculus. With around two dozen Reapers lost, the service moved in 2026 to replace attrition with new aircraft, most likely MQ-9Bs, while reviewing 50+ industry proposals for a next-generation successor.[2]
The Reaper normalised a new kind of air power: persistent, remote, industrial - and politically frictionless enough to be used constantly, which is exactly what its critics fear and its operators value. Every armed drone flying today, from Turkish Bayraktars to China's Wing Loongs, competes in a market category the MQ-9 defined.[1]
Its deepest legacy may be conceptual: the Reaper proved that an aircraft's most valuable component was never the pilot's body but the pilot's judgment - which could be delivered by satellite. Everything now emerging, from loyal wingmen to autonomous collaborative combat aircraft, builds on that separation the Reaper made routine.[2]
Reapers rarely broadcast civil ADS-B during operational or training sorties, so Flightradar24 sightings are uncommon and mostly limited to test/ferry flights near operating bases such as Creech AFB (Nevada) or Grand Forks AFB (North Dakota), or NATO-airspace SkyGuardian flights operated under civil-style flight rules.
